The Physical single!

But if they lowered the price of a single, the Singles (Physically) will go back on the up! The price of them nowadays are shockingly bad! I paid 1.99 for 1 track (Van Tramp) because i thought there was more than one song on there! I was like :o

Also Panic at the disco are allowing people to buy the one track (9 in the afternoon) on physical for 99p! Yes its the one track but everyone should be doing this! They should have the choice to buy the physical for 99p or get the extra track for an extra pound or whatever!

Also Supermarkets (Tesco, Asda and Sainsburys) should stock AT LEAST Charity singles!

Not surprised by the results here but why then are singles not selling? I see the format now on offer for £1 as a one track CD but downloads still way ahead. CDs look great on a shelf as a collection

Physical, the only reason I don't buy so many anymore is because they are so expensive in comparison to downloads...

however, even if the price of CD singles all dropped to 99p I doubt the sales would rise much because people are now so used to the convenience of downloading, being able to buy a song as soon as you want to...you do not have to travel anywhere and you are not dictated by shops opening times

I've already been through this once before. I used to by loads of seven inch vinyl singles (still do, when there's something I want) but that all came to a close in about 1994. Woolworth were the last chain to stock sevens, but they stopped in the spring of that year (Boots and WH Smith had already stopped). This meant there was no incentive for the major labels to make sevens any more so they didn't (except for indie stuff).

Now we're seeing the same thing with the CD single (which I have to admit, I've never liked). There is no incentive for the record labels to make them. Several people on this thread have suggested a price drop to encourage sales, but the record companies are already losing money on them; so where's the incentive? At least they make a few pence on downloads.

I think 2008 will be the year it all changes. By the end of this year physical singles will be extinct for all but indie and dance. With 95% of sales as downloads there is no incentive for labels to make them or shops to stock them.

The labels have spent the last 25 years turning the single from a profit centre into a loss leader and now we're seeing the consequences. In real terms, allowing for inflation, singles should cost about £5 each. Yes really!

Sorry for going on at length, but I just feel a sense of unreality when reading some of the posts on this thread. It really is over and you're just going to have to come to terms with that - just like I had to when the seven inch single all but disappeared. :(

You can copy the songs from your pc to a CD/DVD anytime and you can design your own cover so you don't have to pay for the original covers and boxes. Sometimes they look awful anyway.

I like though special boxes/Box sets but they are exclusive and limited editions anyway.

and look like cheap knock-off jobs.

I've voted physical! :D.

Physical all the way! I'll never pay to download music unless it's a download exclusive (Which I've done a few times)

Downloads, don't see the point in a physical single anymore. More expensive, more time consuming, more space to be taken up, less environmentally friendly...

And do people actually play singles? Or do they just rip them on their computer/compilation cd/mp3 players and shove it out of sight somewhere?

I rip it and put the CD into my collection because I like having a collection, plus if my hard drive ever buggered up then I could just get the CD out again and copy it rather than dispairing about thousands of pounds worth of music being wiped out.

I only buy Physical's really if its one of my favourite artists. Or if it offers quite a few B-sides, like GA singles and Arctic Monkeys...

I prefer physical for one reason.

Downloads - what if you download a track to your computer and the file corrupts, you're Knackered.

I prefer downloads for two reasons.

For albums - You can download seperate tracks that you like instead of having a full physical album with some of the tracks you don't like.

Also you can get back catalogue music which you rarely can on physicals except Best Of albums.

Downloads. And I don't have to worry about what would happen if the computer goes bang - I stick them on my iPod AND burn them to CD immediately (and what are the odds of more than one of those media being f***ed up at the same time?).

And I'd much rather pay 79p for one song rather than £3.99 and maybe like more than one song.

Having said that though, most of my albums are physical purchases, though (there was a brief time when I would download those as well, but I missed being able to read the booklet).

1) You back it up. You're quite frankly an idiot not to back up data of any kind. 2) Download sites let you download what you've purchaed again if they are all wiped.
