Posted March 30, 200817 yr What are people's favourite (or least favourite) twists in films then? :o For me I think my favourite twist is The Sixth Sense - I thought it was pulled off excellently and I had no idea about it. I watched Identity the other day and I really enjoyed the film and thought it was very will written but I didn't like the twist(s). :( The main twist had my head spinning for ages and I actually had to go onto one of those spoiler sites for it to explain the twist to me as I really did not get it AT ALL when I watched it. In terms of twists I really didn't like, I hated the one in The Skeleton Key - it wasn't that it was a bad twist, I just really didn't like it! :(
March 30, 200817 yr Se7en - Won't give it away but anyone that has seen it will know what I mean Crying Game too
March 30, 200817 yr I thought the ending for Catacombs was good, didnt expect it when I first watched it
March 30, 200817 yr M Night Shyamamamalan twists are pretty infamous now. I thought the twist in The Village was awful.
March 31, 200817 yr The twist in 80's horror film April Fool's Day is kind of fun, if not totally predictable.
April 1, 200817 yr The first time I watched "Psycho", I was eight years old... Well, you can imagine the impact that ending left.... Totally shocking.. It's easy to be blase about films like "Psycho" now (seeing as how so many films since have copied it almost verbatim..), but in the context of early '60s mainstream American cinema used to Doris Day and Rock Hudson movies, look at it in those terms.... Bumping off the 'lead' actress 60 minutes into a film as well was also a totally shocking, unpredictable thing..... The ending of "The Innocents" was also one which gave me chills....
April 1, 200817 yr The first time I watched "Psycho", I was eight years old... Well, you can imagine the impact that ending left.... Totally shocking.. doesnt "Psycho" get rid of the main actress at the beginning of the film as well - could that be a twist as well - as main stars normally get to the end.

April 1, 200817 yr The Saw 1 twist was pretty good. The Saw 3 ending wasn't exactly a twist but the ending was all very fast and felt like a twist
April 1, 200817 yr Not so much a twist ... but a shock about a third way in ... the original When A Stranger Calls. I was also surprised with this as as the film unfolded ... I actually started to feel sorry for the murderer ... they made him so pathetic. I'd probably have to go with Psycho though for a twist in the tail. I know some people may laugh at it today (even Hitchcock at the time referred to it as a 'black comedy' rather than a horror) but for its time it was quite ground-breaking. Another film with not so much a twist in the tail, but perhaps a film that has two endings (one about 20 minutes after the other) is The Shawshank Redemption. The bit where Red is reaching up to carve his name on the balcony of his apartment - I really thought he was going to kill himself as the old bloke about 20 odd years before him had) but no ... it goes on to have the glorious ending that it has. Quite deservedly still, according to film polls, in the top five of the best films ever made. Arlington Road has to have the best twist ever though (and another film featuring the ever-excellent Tim Robbins). Norma
April 4, 200817 yr I have always found Donnie Darko a bit mind bending - not quite a twist per se, but it still screwed with my head. As for the Sixth Sense, I actually worked out what was going on - I am quite chuffed that I did  The twist in the Village was 100% perdictable too.

I got Sixth Sense straight away too - but I still enjoyed the film ... one of Brucie's best. Donnie Darko is just legend! I love that film ... possibly one of the weirdest I've seen and I don't know why I like it so much but I do! Norma
April 5, 200817 yr Best ever twist is Nicholas Roeg's masterpiece 'Don't Look Now' - incredible movie.
April 7, 200817 yr There are pretty cool twists in several Dario Argento films, my favourite being Deep Red. Tenebre also has a good twist. The twist in Haute Tension was good IMO thou that really seem to divide people. About the films mentioned here, The Crying Game did have a great twist thou I guess everyone already knew it before seeing the flick. The Sixth Sense, I had figured out the twist by halfway of the flick and actually thought the flick was quite dull. And Village, that piece of false-advertised $h!t eventually had ok twist but by that time I was so pissed and just wanting the leave the theatre (I mean, c'mon, all the adds making the flick look like a horror film when it actually was a some kind of social commentary/drama) that I just didn't care anymore.

Personally, I thought the twist in "Haute Tension" was utterly awesome... You think "Oh, yeah, another slasher film, with some big, scary bloke with a knife chasing some young, terrified girl, cliche city, seen it all before....", then it just totally short-circuits the 'slasher' genre conventions entirely and gives you something actually interesting, psychologically, to think about.... Argento used to do these sorts of twists and turns with the Horror/Thriller genre as well (mainly with his films in the 70s/80s it has to be said, most of his later films have been severe disappointments..), elevating his films well above mere "genre fodder". The biggest influence on the makers of the "Saw" films is probably Argento....

I totally agree with you about Haute Tension. thou even before the twist I didn't think it was a basic slasher because of two things: It was way more violent than an average (American) slasher and also what happened to the kid. I really cannot see why the ending was so hated by some. Brilliant to see that someone else than me knows Argento and his films (and you probably know also a lot about other Itralian horror). I have thought about starting Italian horror thread but decided not to because there probably would be about three people who would have anything to say about it. And yeah, Argento's flicks have gone downhill drastically lately, thou I did like Trauma. I was so waiting to see Mother Of Tears but I've heard it is really dreadful and really ain't expecting much anymore. Some Italian horror films I really like are Demons and Stage Fright (thou time hasn't treated the latter too well). Scream and The others do have great twists also.
