Phil Collins Announces 'Retirement From Music Industry'

Was it something the Gorilla said?...

by Jason Gregory

25 April 2008

Phil Collins, known best for his role as the lead singer and drummer in Genesis, appears to have dramatically announced his retirement from the music industry.

In an interview with The Times newspaper, Collins said he had no plans to tour again and that any future writing was unlikely to become an album.

Unusually, the former Genesis star chose to make his announcement by reciting the lines of a famous Basil Fawlty sketch.

“Zoom! What was that?” Collins said. “That was your life, mate. Do I get another? No, sorry that was your lot.”

Collins’ bombshell comes at the end of an interview which sees him candidly talk about his career, including his 2001 ‘Urban Renewal’ album, which was a compilation of famous hip-hop hits.

“'Urban Renewal' was sweet because I’ve been – unfairly, I would say – plonked in the middle of the road because of a handful of songs,” Collins said.

“It came at a good time for me, because you do take a bit of a browbeating and, as you get older, you become better at accepting it and realising why it happens.”

Collins was also asked if he minded being most-known for one song, his famous ‘In The Air Tonight’, which was used recently in an advert for a chocolate company.

“Do I mind? Well, if you’re ever remembered at all, it’s only usually for one or two things. With me, it’ll be: ‘He faxed his wife a divorce’, which is actually bollocks, but that’ll be on top of the headstone.

“And then, further down, you’ll have ‘Da-dum, da-dum’ . . .”

How do you feel about Phil Collins announcement? Are you as shocked or do you feel like celebrating with a Cadbury's Dairy Milk bar?

I feel like celebrating, but it wouldn't be with a Cadbury's Dairy Milk bar. Galaxy chocolate is so much better.

Anyway, I'm not surprised or bothered at this. Phil Collins is someone with a voice that I can't stand to be honest.

Against All Odds as well! :o ...But Seriously, I Don't Care Anymore.

:kink:

Hallelujah - there IS a God!

Perhaps he'll devote his time to campaigning for the Tory party - he always seemed overly keen on voicing his support for them......

Horrible little man who, in reality, simply hasn't released a single decent song in his life (including the ghastly Cadbury ad song) and who has always, quite deservedly, lived in the shadow of the wonderful Peter Gabriel, a man with more talent and integrity in his little finger than Collins has in his whole body.

on one hand yeah compared to Peter Gabriel he is just a drummer, but on the positive side he is not Ray Wilson or Paul Carrack - now you might have grown up in the 1980s towards alternative culture and so obv hate Phil Collins - but actually he's not as bad a some people make out - Two Hearts was playing on the TMF Movie hits countdown today and for a cheesy faux-motown pop its alright - even by bro's kid was tapping his feat along to it - and at least its not as useless as the cup of coffee song or ace's how long - a song that they couldnt be bother to write any more verses for when one would do

and as far as alcazar go - better using parts of genesis land of confusion than londonbeat or the human league any day

if a child relative of mine tapped his toes to a Phil Collins record, I'm afraid the adoption agency would be getting a call first thing Monday morning.... ;)

The only decent thing Collins did in his whole career was prodduce Frida's 'Something's Going On' album.... and the Genesis single Mama.

I find it hilarious that the Americans don't seem to 'get' how deeply naff and unpopular Collins is... and they keep using him for urban trash. It aint ironic, it aint clever - it's just pure unbridled $h!t, I'm afraid.

Anyone remember his awful, awful track 'Another day in paradise'? This fat, bald, right-wing ex-pat singing pleadingly about the awful plight of the homeless..... written from the comfort of his Swiss chateau. Ghastly man.

I can't stand Phil Collins - the second smuggest face in pop. Whenever I think of him I just recall him getting taken in by Chris Morris and the brilliant Brass Eye and it brings a smile to my face!

Yeah... What an absolute c/unt.... He was almost bloody rubbing homeless peoples' faces in it really... It really doesn't get much more insincere and smug than that....

As for his "announcement".... Well, come on, did he actually do anything of musical worth in the past 30 years anyway....?

He was only "cool" in the 80s 'cos "Miami Vice" kept playing "Something In The Air" on various episodes....

...Along with Godley and Creame.....

 I take it i'm the only One on here who likes the bloke. -_- I actually love most of his his music and even bought his greatest hits album. The blokes a legend. -_-

Which "Greatest Hits" collection was that then...? Seems to me that the money-grubbing tw@t had a 'slightly' different one out just about every sodding Christmas for about 15 years....

...This is when you know that an act is completely artistically worthless, when they churn out more 'compilations' than actual new material just to cash in on the Christmas market.... -_-

Sorry mate, but Phil Collins is just the worst kind of "artiste" as far as I'm concerned.... Same goes for that other c/unt, Cliff Richards....

I'm a bit mystified as to the hate. Yes he's done some c**p, but he's got enough decent tracks to balance it out.

I think the 'hate' has been pretty plainly explained TBH.... He's a smug, two-faced, hypocritical, w/anker.... Bill Bailey did a brilliant hatchet job of "Another Day In Paradise" on '...Buzzcocks'. Classic TV moment that one.... Yeah, all that "Boo-hoo-hooing" for the homeless he did... From his tax haven in Switzerland....

but maybe this criticism should be directed at EMI rather than the artist??? as the record co would wanna make their archive work for them

Is this to do with their videos? as they were in 10cc werent they - and isnt something like I'm Not in Love worse thasn anything Phil Collins might have produced - or when dealing with Phil Colins is it more then man rather than the music??

Oh come on!! That's a really lame excuse... Like someone with the sort of profile Phil Collins had wouldn've have been in a position to say "Fukk off", even to EMI...? Acts like U2, Prince and REM have certainly managed to resist that sort of sheer Corporate p!ss-taking... And it doesn't alter the fact that the bloke never came up with any original material for donkeys years either, being merely content to sit back and keep getting the new money for old rope year after year...

That's just sheer laziness in my book....

Godely and Creame at least have one significant claim to fame - they were pioneers in the Pop Promo art-form in the 80s, which fed directly into what Michael Mann was wanting to do with "Miami Vice" in the early/mid-80s... "I'm Not In Love" sucked donkey sh!te to be sure, but that was 10cc... "Cry" was the song of their's that I directly remember being promoted on "Miami Vice", and that was a fukkin' KILLER tune with a bloody brilliant, ground-breaking video to match it... Nothing Collins did comes close to matching that one mate.... Not even "Mama"....

i can't believe this cliff richard and phil collins are both really slagged off here and yet 2 of the most biggest names in the music industry

Can't believe this statement. Since when was "biggest name in the music industry" some kind of shorthand for good music. Everything Collins turned his hand to was $h!t including the Adam Ant album 'Strip' (and I adore Mr Ant's output!)

As for Cliff, well....

LOL.

Cliff 'Christ' Richards and Phil 'Yawn' Collins?
