Woolies launches Coldplay price war

Woolworths’ download store is to sell the new Coldplay album for under £5, in a move that it admits could spark a price war among retailers.

Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends goes on sales globally tomorrow (June 12) and Woolworthsdownload.co.uk is to offer the album for just £4.97 to the first 5,000 customers.

Woolworths sees the offer as important publicity for its new store, which launched at the end of May. However, it admits that with its price likely to be £2 cheaper than other UK download stores, it may spark a price war.

“£4.97 is a stunning price for any new release album, let alone the hottest release of the year,” says Woolworths music trading manager Alan Hunt.

“Value is extremely important to Woolies customers and this is an example of us driving down prices as much as possible for our digital customers as well as our online and in-store customers.”

Whereas no-one would touch it, otherwise? :)

Why are they releasing the album on a Thursday? Isn't it best to release at the start of the week to gain maximum sales?

Well regardless of when it's released, it's still going to sell the same amount, it just won't register in one bundle when the Music Week report comes in this Monday as that will only have counted the first three days of its sale (Thurs-Sat).

Maybe they want it to be first released in the UK...

In Germany for example it's coming out on Friday, so the "normal" UK date on Monday would be 3 days after that...

Hardly worth the hype. Nowhere near as good as any of their other albums.

I think the reason lies in the declining music market. The obvious thing is that they aren't able to sell as much as they did with "X&Y" so let's say the final first week result would be less than 250,000. It makes for a perfect start however the media would not pay attention to how huge this figure is in 2008 but they would focus on comparisons with X&Y's almost double figures instead. The publicity generated out of it would suggest that Coldplay have lost their steam and are set to flop shortly after the big debut. It's very difficult to follow successfully such a record-breaking album. Now they will avoid comparisons and their sales will possibly set a record for a 3-day period as there is not much competition in this matter (of course apart from Oasis' legendary "Be Here Now" debut from 1997).

Just a quick question...do downloads for albums count towards the official chart?

I would assume so. But you'd actually have to click "Buy Album" rather than downloading every song separately. Though I've never downloaded an album myself so I'm not sure.

It's a shame old Woolworths didn't remember that they have actual living customers who walk into their shops to buy the Coldplay album..... Coldplay is £9.97 in their stores... almost £3 more expensive than many other places

No, it's £9 in most places.

Can't see it outselling Be Here Now for three days.

Of course it won't!

Nevertheless no matter how much they sell, it will still be highlighted as some kind of record simply because it's unusual to release albums on Thursday and we all know it will be selling fast.

Eminem has already hit number one twice in the UK and America, with just 3 days sales in 2004 and only 2 days sales in 2005 he got the no1.
