Posted June 17, 200817 yr Coldplay eyeing first ever number one single Source: MW 12:58 | Tuesday June 17, 2008 By Paul Williams Coldplay are strong bets to score their first ever UK number one single with early retail sales suggesting Viva La Vida will debut at number one this Sunday. The Parlophone track had previously been excluded from the chart after being made available as an individual download to anyone pre-ordering the digital version of the band’s new album. However, that situation has now passed, allowing Viva La Vida to qualify for the singles chart for the first time. Coldplay, whose Speed Of Sound was famously prevented from becoming the band’s first number one single in 2005 by Crazy Frog, are presently a few hundred sales ahead of Mint Royale’s Syco-issued Singin’ In The Rain with Def Jam/Mercury’s Close by Ne-Yo third in a tightly-packed race among the leading contenders. In fact, there are little more than 2,000 sales separating the current midweek number one and Jive/RCA act Chris Brown’s Forever at number eight. While the battle for number one on the singles chart is too close to call at present, Coldplay are certainties to spend a second week at the top of the artist albums chart with Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends currently outselling its closest challenger, Rockferry by Duffy, by more than six units to one. Coldplay could also find themselves with two simultaneous Top 10 singles for the first time with Violet Hill presently sitting at 10 on the midweeks, up from 12 where it landed on last Sunday’s chart. Lower down, expect brand new entries in this coming weekend’s singles countdown from acts including the Subways and Billiam, while Cage The Elephant will break into the Top 40 for the first time, with Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked set to make a huge climb from its present chart position of 196. Back on the albums chart and, while Coldplay’s phenomenal sales mean the contest for number one this week is already over, the band will be joined by no less than eight brand new entries in the Top 20. These include Echo’s Feeder with Silent Cry and Dennis Wilson scoring his first-ever solo hit album in the UK, some 25 years after he died in a drowning accident. Sony BMG’s revival of his Pacific Ocean Blue & Bambu – 2 is presently eight in the midweeks, ahead of new entries from Darren Styles, Fleet Foxes, Sara Bareillies, The Music, Judas Priest and Weezer. June 17, 200817 yr hard to predict this week...if Coldplay are eligible, it will be neck and neck between them and Mint Royale...Ne-Yo and Sara Bareilles should be top five too and probably Rihanna... in the albums I've got everything crossed for a top ten debut for Sara Bareilles...don't be surprised if Darren Styles ends up top 20 too!
June 17, 200817 yr Looks like we're gonna hit the same summer sales slump we got last year......why is this? any clue?
June 17, 200817 yr Looks like we're gonna hit the same summer sales slump we got last year......why is this? any clue? Why release in summer if sales are low? Fewer big releases means lower overall sales. Thats why mcfly have decided to release now, they will get their oh so famous number 1 single and get a high placing with the album and yet hardly sell anything.
June 17, 200817 yr I dont think its fair that coldplay cant chart and not coz i like them but people are buying the song, it should be there.
June 17, 200817 yr Author Its a double celebration for Coldplay its eligible Now give me a mo when I figure everything out
June 17, 200817 yr Coldplay's first No.1 is with an album track with no video  finally heard the song this morning...it's not bad :D
June 17, 200817 yr OMG... single number 1 without videoclip and only from websales... unbeliveable... It's about time for them to have a sunle number 1... someone know about the sales? I'm worried about ne-yo climbing in the weekend and pass them.
June 17, 200817 yr Darren Styles in the top ten, as I expected :P shame Sara's album's not top ten but a 'real' week in the top five singles is good news, seeing as she's currently in there by default... Billiam in the top 40 again  there are about 30 versions of the song available to buy on iTunes
June 17, 200817 yr Author Thank god for that no sign of Jonas Brothers unless its #40, all we have is a top 39
June 17, 200817 yr OMG... single number 1 without videoclip and only from websales... It's now a new dawn for downloads - I bet physicals will be no more later this year!
June 17, 200817 yr Omg @ Styles, I didn't think it would be that big! Has been long-awaited though. I'm getting mine on Saturday :D
