Get Smart, starring Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway, has topped the US box office, early figures suggest.

Last week's number one, The Incredible Hulk, fell to number three and Mike Myers' new release The Love Guru reached fourth place.

Mark Wahlberg's thriller The Happening rounded off the top five.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull fell one place to number six and You Don't Mess With the Zohan followed in seventh place.

Mike Myers' Love Guru bombs in US

It's only been five years since Mike Myers' last live-action film, but Hollywood's former comedy golden boy will have emerged blinking into the sunlight this morning brutally aware that a new era has dawned, after his latest feature bombed at the US box office.

The Love Guru, a comedy about an American Hindu self-help specialist who returns from India to the land of his birth, opened in fourth spot with just $14m (£7.5m). By way of contrast, Myers' last outing as Austin Powers, 2002's Goldmember, took $73m on its first weekend.

The Love Guru, which has suffered from poor reviews, was beaten to the No 1 spot by another comedy, Get Smart, starring Steve Carell as secret agent Maxwell Smart. The film, which is an update of Mel Brooks' 60s spy satire, took $39.2m on debut. Ironically, it follows a very similar premise to Myers' successful Austin Powers series.

In second spot, the Jack Black animated comedy Kung Fu Panda hung on well with another $21.7m in its third weekend. It leapfrogged Louis Leterrier's reimagined superhero tale The Incredible Hulk, which dropped 61% in its second weekend to take another $21.6m. The new Hulk is still running slightly behind its much derided Ang Lee-directed predecessor, but looks likely to overtake it in the next few weeks. The new Marvel studio's other summer superhero hit, Iron Man, passed the $300m milestone at the weekend.

The top five was rounded out by the M Night Shyamalan chiller The Happening, which took another $10m in fifth. There were no other new films in the top 10

Even if both the Love Guru and Get Smart turn out to be 2 star films - and unlike the Austin Powers films - things you might only watch one or a couple of times - I suppose both will still be better than the forthcoming Pink Panther sequel (or even Inspector Gadget 2!!!)

I saw a trailer for "Love Guru" last week... Looks to be absolute SH!TE!!!! Mike Myers is someone I usually like, but in this film, he just seems so utterly cheesy and rubbish... Even "Dont Mess With The Zohan" looks better than this garbage.....

Not sure I'm gonna like "Get Smart" though either... I used to quite like the show when Channel 4 were repeating it years ago....

Wayne's World, Austin Powers, classic films. The Love Guru..

yeah omg! the reviews for the love guru have been so bad that it might actually be worse than both good luck chuck and steve martin's pink panther....with Alba's career looking more and pointless by the day...

on the other hand Get Smart might be alright and be worth watching if nothing else is on - tho obv it's not gonna be in the same league as the Naked Gun (Get Smart's director Peter Segal also did Naked Gun 33⅓) maybe just a bit better than Spy Hard, which I ended up watching last night and wasnt that bad even tho it was a bit cheap spoofery and may be the film really responsible for epic movie, meet the spartans, superhero movie rather than the more sophisticated like airplane and blazing saddled (which were spoofing more the genre than actual films - which works better when watching then 10, 20 years after they were made - tho i had been reading a feature in empire about 80's comedy king john huges just before watching spy hard - and it was quite amazing to think that in the mid-1990s you could get away with spoofing a film - home alone - from 6 years previously esp when the movie spoof films now would try and reference a film weeks before the film has come out)

Youre surprised how many times you laughed - i'm surprised someone could laugh more than once (the Verne Troyer out-take was the only time...and i think maybe someone could have a smirk at the Wayne's World reference...but not a full laugh so we'll disqualify that  )

But this was one of the worst film of the year....and much worse Steve Martin's Pink Panther (which has now gone up in my opinion - tho maybe the Pink Panther is more a kids film as actually my bro's kid likes it and was watching the other day when he came round) and tbh might have been better if Mike Myers did fully go for a Peter Seller's Goodness Gracious Me comedy Indian accent and been more offensive blacking up than playing it like Brendan Fraser's hairy peadophile brother (by the way of devendra banhart)....tho for a moment you could have easily mistaken Prudence for being played by a Blackface Jessica Alba in a duel role before realizing that it was actually Meagan Good...seeing as both could have been that interchangable both seeming to have come off the same kinda comedy babe sidekick production line (tho the Alba version being made of 100% wood)

Yeah actually it was and actually had some moments i laughed at (usually at the expense of Mel Gibson)....tho maybe every part with Rob Schneider in should have been cut out

"Get Smart" is surprisingly okay, even if Anne Hathaway is a shade bland for the role of Agent 99... Steve Carrell more than makes up for any shortcomings in Ms Hathaway's dept... Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) is actually quite surprisingly good as Agent 23, he nails that whole arrogant, braggard act down perfectly... Mind you, I suppose in his Wresting career, acting the arrogant buffoon was just all in a day's work.... Johnson has obvious limitations as an actor, but knows he does and doesn't try to do anything elaborate...

The film zips along nicely, some good one-liners and visual gags, but then it all seems to unravel in the final 15 minutes or so, with a rather naff big action sequence which seemed more like it came from some DTV "Die Hard" wannabe.... And it was doing so well when sticking to the spoof angle.....

Going to see Get Smart today before i go bowling :D Can;t wait to see it actually ^_^

i really want to see Get Smart, it looks pretty good

and having Anne Hathaway in it is a bonus

yeah its enjoyable...and actually i quite liked it...coming out of the cinema thinking that was quite good after the final comic scene...but there was an uneasy mix between the action and the spoof...i think the people behind the film should have decided whether it should have been more a comedy film or more an action film..as at the moment it falls somewhere between the two...and as a spoof doesnt work as well in that respect as something like (the remake of) Dragnet or the Naked Gun which even tho they are on tv like every other week, can be watched over and over again if nothing else on... think with Get Smart - if it was listed as being on BBC Three with the Naked Gun on E4, Men In Black on fiver and something like Die Hard or Bond on ITV2 (plus you were mentally funked to watch some new foreign language film on film 4) and just wanted to chill out and watch sometihing easy that you've watched before..think Get Smart wouldn't be your first choice...tho if it was on DVD in a double pack with the Bruce and Lloyd film - think it be worth getting. The Bruce and Lloyd film being DTV might be to the same standard as American Pie 93407 ...tho it cant be as bad - in a film to DTV ratio as the Anchorman Wake Up cut & paste 'film'...and tbh would have been better if there was more Bruce and Lloyd in the main film.

I was itching to leave the cinema halfway through Get Smart ... it just dragged on and on. Most of the characters/actors were underused (especially Masi Oka) and the gags were paper thin, i didnt hear more than a few laughs from the half full cinema for the whole film.

Absolutely dire thinking about its 'star power' which really doesnt help the films quality in any way, most actors have terrible comic timing and the rest seem to be trying to hard to 'act' and forget that they're in a dull comedy film which will be forgotton about in less than a year.

it does drag a bit...but at least the gag at the end makes you leave the cinema thinking that was alright after all....unlike Babylon AD which on the other hand is supposed to be a brilliant film...

...but only if you leave 20 minutes before the end...
