20 14 CONFRONTATION - BOB MARLEY AND THE WAILERS

A severe lack of Compilations in 1983! Only STREET SOUNDS, and CHART STARS were in the combined top 30. Most of the top 10 artist albums, sporned a single in the same week`s singles chart. The POLICE did well keeping MICHAEL JACKSON off the top (but he did return, there later). ROD STEWART only managed number 3, with his album...as his single road higher in the singles...WHAM! were on their way, to the top of the album chart...ELTON JOHN had a much revived chart move, in 1983...DAVID SYLVIAN was doing well with JAPAN...KOOL AND THE GANG did alright, with the album...as did PETER GABRIEL, but lacked singles in 83...JON AND VANGELIS were ever popular...and TALKING HEADS were too (sporning the girls from the group, to form the TOM TOM CLUB in 1981)...Just outside the top 20 albums, was RICKIE LEE JONES and "GIRL AT HER VOLCANO". This album, did not carry any singles, and achieved absolutely no radioplays, either! We well remember RICKIE LEE JONES only chart selling single, was "CHUCKIE`S IN LOVE" in July 1979.

Here are the singles, in July 1983...

35 NE THE WALK - THE CURE

36 22 LOVE TOWN - BOOKER NEWBERRY III

37 NE AFTER A FASHION - MIDGE URE/MICK KARN

38 NE CRUEL SUMMER - BANANARAMA

39 27 HANG ON NOW - KAJAGOOGOO

40 26 WE CAME TO DANCE - ULTRAVOX

2 weeks at the top, for ROD STEWART and his first number one, since 1977. IRENE CARA just missed, on the number one, with the theme to FLASHDANCE (A film, that she did not appear in)...MIKE OLDFIELD teamed up with MAGGIE REILLY...PAUL YOUNG covered a MARVIN GAYE 1969 B side (it was the B side to "TOO BUSY THINKING ABOUT MY BABY"). FREEEZ came along, with a song, that was well re-mixed years later...TOM ROBINSON was back...HEAVEN 17 followed up "TEMPTATION"...SHALAMAR had their last top ten hit...THE POLICE took a song from the album, and was simultaneosly a number one...ELTON JOHN scored 4 top 40 singles in 1983...NICK HAYWARD had a second hit, away from HAIRCUT 100...The ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA returned with a single, from the album...FUNK MASTERS looked promising, but disappeared quickly...FORBIDDEN COLOURS and SYLVIAN/SAKAMOTO was the theme to the film "MERRY CHRISTMAS MR LAWRENCE". MALCOM MCCLAREN went skating, as well as skipping, with a hit from the album "DUCK ROCK"...THE TRUTH scored with CONFUSION (featuring the talents of DENNIS GREAVES)...MARY JANE GIRLS were good to look at...JIMMY THE HOOVER only ever scored with "TANTALIZE". There were some follow ups, I bought KILL ME KWIK", in the Autumn. DONNA SUMMER was doing ok, on a comeback...ROMAN HOLIDAY also looked promising, but again faded away...MARILLION issued "GARDEN PARTY", and sounded like ALEX HARVEY`s "BOSTON TEA PARTY". A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS were on the decline, too...and MIDGE URE featured on ULTRAVOX, and his duet with the other JAPAN star MICK KARN. Incidently SHAKATAK who appear in this chart, recently performed in Japan, and are currently performing in a few performances, in various cafes in the London area, as well as doing an 80s show, with some other 80s, artists.

(The vintage charts were compiled by MRIB, for Independant Radio 1983).

) Position without downloads alone. Without downloads alone...GOLDFRAPP at 37, LIL` WAYNE is 38, TAIO CRUZ is 39, and MGMT (TIME TO PRETEND) is 40. Much different chart without downloads alone, isn`t it?! :D 16 downloads alone, in this week`s top 50, and 4 of them are in the top 5 (which is a record feat).

= Is the position, on Chart Show tv. On there, GOLDFRAPP are 38, LIL` WAYNE is 48, TAIO CRUZ 49, and VAMPIRE WEEKEND are 50.

DIZEE takes the top spot, and sells over 16,000 more than NE YO. Outside the top 50, we have GOLDFRAPP at 51, KOOKS at 54 (SHINE ON) KINGS OF LEON at 58, MGMT (TIME TO PRETEND) at 56, The VERVE are 57. USHER (MOVING MOUNTAINS) at 61, and LADYHAWKE at 62. ADELE (HOMETOWN GLORY), is in the top 75. TRAVIS misses the top 75, and losers this week are also MOBY - I LOVE TO MOVE IN HERE, and PAUL HEATON - MERMAIDS AND SLAVES.

Next week look out for singles from PINT SHOT RIOT, PAUL CARRACK, HERCULES AND LOVE AFFAIR, JAY SEAN, and the WOMBATS. On the album front, look out for albums from BLACK KIDS, UNKLE, BECK, FREEMASONS, ALKALINE TRIO, (and V A Comps) entitled CONNECTED, ULTIMATE STREET DANCE, 101 SUMMER SONGS, and 70s DINNER PARTY.

NOTE: THIS SINGLES CHART IS NOT THE OFFICIAL CHART...It is based on Chart Show tv`s chart, with added sales info, to bring it up to date, as of Friday night. Chart Show`s chart countdown, can be seen on Saturdays, between 4 - 7.30pm (Sky 355), playing over 50 videos, in 3 and a half hours. A similar show, can be seen on MTV hits between 1 - 3.30pm, on Sundays...playing the MTV Hits30. Both charts, are based on sales, and airplay (but the airplay is not that big, and so favour`s sales, more than say Hit40uk). Our chart tonight, is just based on sales.

Can I ask a few questions?

Does this chart forecast/project the likely finishing position for each single by close of play Saturday Night?

Or does this chart only consider sales up to Friday afternoon (?) with no further projection?

Or something else?

Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere - this is the first time I've seen this chart and its really interesting, particularly the physicals!

Well Spidey we have been doing this chart ever since MRIB (Media Research Information Bureau) stopped doing one. What we do now, is to take sales, up to late Friday afternoon, and add them on to the Chart Show positions, after taking away airplay. It doesn`t cover Saturday sales, but if I get any further info, on a Saturday, then I will put it up tomorrow, in a brief update.

Hope that answers, your questions! The actual chart (as it stands now) will be very close, to how the official will look, on Sunday (as regulars, will tell you). If you like a forecast, Trevs does that on a Monday at 6ish, in Next Week`s Chart (which carefully predicts, the following week`s charts, by looking at pre-orders and minor sales).

This chart is always VERY close to what happens on Sunday...

I have a feeling that Basshunter might just sneak past Ne-Yo tomorrow. Either way it'll be top2 next week when the physical kicks in.

I still think Ne'Yo will be #2 on Sunday, his physicals seem to be stronger

There are currently just over 1,500 sales seperating Ne Yo, and Basshunter. Chris Brown, is likely to take the number 5, back from Coldplay, though..with only a handful, of sales seperating them.

Here is a bit of a stretched update, for Saturday. Mainly because KID ROCK have made an impacted, on downloads alone.

It looks like Nickelback`s days of "Rockstar", are over, as it falls out, of the top 50, along with Glas Vegas, and "Geraldine".

Madonna`s "Give It 2 Me", goes to 17.

It look`s like Usher will be at 27, Alphabeat (10,000 Nights) at 28, Estelle (No Substitute Love) will be 29, and Flo Rida (Low) at 30.

Jay Z look`s like slipping a bit with "99 Problems", to 35. Meaning Duffy and "Mercy" will be higher, around 34.

The Kooks, and Kid Rock...replace Nickelback, and Glas Vegas, in the lower top 50 reaches. Kid Rock, are likely to be around the bottom 10, of the top 40 tomorrow.

To complete, here are the top physical pre-orders, from a division of HMV

01 One For The Radio - McFly (released 14th July)

02 Give It 2 Me - Madonna (released 14th July)

03 Dance Wiv Me - Dizee Rascal (released 7th July)

04 Sleep When I`m Dead - The Cure (released Sun 13th June)

05 No Air - Jordin Sparks (released 7th July)

06 Start Digging - Pint Shot Riot (released 7th July)

07 The One - Kylie Minogue (released 28th July)

08 All The Times I Cried - Sharleen Spiterri (released 7th July)

09 Turn It Up - The Feeling (released 14th July)

10 Ain`t No Love In The City - Paul Carrack (released 7th July)

11 Standing Next To Me - Last Shadow Puppets (released 7th July)

12 All Summer Long - Kid Rock (released 14th July)

13 All I Ever Wanted - Basshunter (released 7th July)

14 I Know Your Girlfriend Hates Me - Annie (released 14th July)

15 Shut Up And Let Me Go - Ting Tings (released 21st July)

What can we deduce, from that? Not a lot, to be honest. Though, it`s a dead cert, for Dizee Rascal to have 2 weeks, at the top. McFly, won`t get the downloads, to take them to the top. It might be too late, for Madonna. As Kid Rock`s downloads, are so high...it seems, they could well knock Dizee Rascal, off the top, on Monday 14th July. Basshunter, and Jordin Sparks, will battle for no` 2, next week. Looking definate, that Basshunter, has the better chance, with Jordin being too late. I still think, Kylie has a chance, on 28th July, maybe??

I still think, Kylie has a chance, on 28th July, maybe??

Not a chance, and especially if, as rumoured, its back to a download-only release again

I hope Sharleen can scrape top 40 come tomorrow ^_^
