August 2, 200817 yr I work in woolies and this week our singles chart was replaced with a stand for our own make CDs and I don't know how many people have been in this week asking for specific songs! It is crazy - we get shot of the stock, people then want it. Yeah...our Woolies is well depressing now... You get the Albums charts on one side...and the 3Disk custom Cds on the other side mixed in with the bargain albums that are like 3 years old  The only problem with Woolies and CD Singles was that they never seemed to stock enough new releases...3 was the maximum i saw this year...with most weeks they only stocked 1 =[
August 2, 200817 yr Interesting, but painfully boring after months on end... But hey, the purpose of the chart is to give an accurate picture of what's popular, and it's still achieving that.
August 3, 200816 yr Author But hey, the purpose of the chart is to give an accurate picture of what's popular, and it's still achieving that. True - but when most people rely on the relatively conservative big 2 radio stations to tell them what's out there, they miss out on a lot of other music that they might like more. Sites like Youtube etc. counter this trend, of course, but only a small proportion of music fans are actually *looking* for new sounds. Edited August 3, 200816 yr by vidcapper
August 3, 200816 yr when all record labels start to release great physicals which include remixes, B-Sides ,music videos or live videos and an enhanced feature which allow you to have access to extra-content on the net, then physical sales with increase greatly and we'll have fast singles chart turnover again.... It won't, unless the price of a physical matches the 79p download, which is HIGHLY unlikely. People aren't going to pay £3 or £4 to buy a load of remixes and B-sides they may not like, when they download the one track they actually want for 79p. The physical is dead.

You are highly deluded if you think this will ever happen. The physical will never (to any significant amount) gain in popularity. If people really did want all these remixes, b-sides and exclusives they'd all be appearing in the iTunes chart and more people would buy digital bundles. But they don't, because the vast majority of single buyers want just the one song, the one they hear on the radio and see on the tv which they want to buy!
August 4, 200816 yr Author You are highly deluded if you think this will ever happen. The physical will never (to any significant amount) gain in popularity. I reluctantly have to agree with you there. CD single sales will eventually reach a low but stable point, just as vinyl has, but I can't see any chance of a significant resurgence.
