Posted August 10, 200816 yr Would popcorn-free cinemas ruin the experience for you, or is it good riddance to a messy, noisy, expensive snack? And what do you munch on at the flicks? The news in today's Observer that Picture House cinemas are to experiment with popcorn-free films may come as no surprise to devotees of the independent cinema chain more used to yoghurt coated raisins and the delights of taking a G&T into the auditorium than scoffing huge quantities of exploded maize. Personally I've never been a big fan, often goggling in disbelief at the giant buckets of the stuff people haul onto their laps as the Pearl and Dean theme tune plays (I've also been a bit wary of any food served in a bucket since first watching Monty Python's Meaning of Life), but each to their own. I defy anyone, however, not to feel sorry for the cinema cleaning staff who have to deal with drifts of dropped and discarded corny detritus after every screening. My own cinema addiction is Revels. I'm not proud of it but I have happily consumed an entire large bag before the appearance of the BBFC classification card on more than one occasion (and will doubtless do so again despite that execrable TV ad taking off the Deerhunter). What do you like to take into the auditorium in unhealthy quantities? Is popcorn all part of the sacred ritual of going to the movies, or is a popcorn-free cinema experience just what you've been waiting for? Source: The Observer (Blog by Rick Peters)
August 10, 200816 yr I still eat popcorn... Even though its ridiculously overpriced <_< In Portugal i paid 1.50 for popcorn that looked like medium and that was their small  Large was only 2.50 but the best bit is coming up... Tickets... 1 Euro which is around £2.50 i think... I wouldnt really care if they were selling popcorn or not tbh... I always bring my own food into the cinema. But if a cinema were to make a food free film, then that would suck completely as you have to have some kind of snack... Its just the way society has been brought up and also if popcorn were to be dropped, im sure ticket prices will climb
August 10, 200816 yr £2.50 is nothing compared to over here. Try spending about £4.00, just to get a decently-sized popcorn tub. Although, it's true that Cinema Popcorn does taste the best then what you buy in the supermarket.
August 10, 200816 yr Pfff, getting popcorn is part of the cinematic experience. Yeahh it is REALLY over-priced I mean it's like £4.60 for a large popcorn at the VUE in York, and then it's like £6.85 if you want a drink... yeah it's expensive, but you've gone out, and if you were going out to the pub or something you'd still spend that much really, so personally I don't mind paying a lot for it, I mean, it's not you go to the cinema every week either.
August 10, 200816 yr Good thing im going Cinema's tomorrow cos all this talk about Popcorn has given me a soft spot for it now
August 10, 200816 yr The soul reason I go at the Cinemaxx in Germany over other cinema is the good popcorn. Yummiiii! Popcorn is really bound with cinema in my head. I am really happy when I am coming in into a cinema because in couple of minutes I will have popcorn :w00t: . The popcorn from supermarket is nothing in comparation.
August 11, 200816 yr The Popcorn is nice, but way too pricy I mean 3.20 for a small? Which is about 1 and a bit scoop. A Regular is 3.70 and you can get around 3 scoops in that but the large is 4 quid and you get about 6 scoops with that ^_^ But I think most people enjoy popcorn with their films. Its just a snack to much on its there for when you want something really...
August 12, 200816 yr To be honest I prefer the big packs of Peanut M&Ms (which I buy in Tesco for about a quid cheaper than Cineworld).....
August 12, 200816 yr I'm always prepared before I go to Cinema, with it being £7 at our Vue to get a small drink and popcorn I buy a bag of sweets and a bottle of coke for £1 at the the Tesco next door. B) Allthough I would buy cinema popcorn if it was cheaper, lol. Edited August 12, 200816 yr by Jonny
August 12, 200816 yr I don't think popcorn has had it's day when I go to the cinema I always buy popcorn, it all part of going to the cinema. I love popcorn even though it's overpriced. I feel like I always need something like pocorn, sweets etc... to eat while watching a film.
August 12, 200816 yr Cineworld popcorn = *erection* <3. Only in regulars though; larges tend to be $h!t near the end :( It costs a fair bit, but I'm alright because my bf just buys it for me hah. Oof and their Ben & Jerry twister milkshakes, ooh err.
August 13, 200816 yr The popcorn, drinks and confectionery is the only way cinemas make their money though. They make pennies, if that from ticket sales. I don't necessarily agree with it though, having once worked at a cinema I saw the extent of the extortion. So I just buy snacks and sneak them in. :D

The wines will also be available by the glass and bottle to enjoy while watching the film. Tickets cost £20 for Members and £22 for non-Members, and are available from the cinema or on 0871 704 2055. Me thinks quite a difference than your usual out of town leisure park cineworld... even tho Picture House cinemas are competing with those big multiplex circuits by showing Mamma Mia, The Dark Knight and even Wild Child in some of their sites (tho the one in Notting Hill Gate is showing the Pope's Toilet which has little chance of getting to cineworld) i'm getting the vibe that they are quite art-house at heart  and so maybe their regualrs...having no time for a populist downmarket americanized snack like hot buttered popcorn To be honest I prefer the big packs of Peanut M&Ms (which I buy in Tesco for about a quid cheaper than Cineworld)..... you mean you manage to smuggle them in with out being strip searched....they may say they are looking in your bag for a camcorder but we know the truth...its the candy-patrol!!!!!
August 17, 200816 yr you mean you manage to smuggle them in with out being strip searched....they may say they are looking in your bag for a camcorder but we know the truth...its the candy-patrol!!!!! I aint a chav, so I dont tend to get searched anywhere I go.... They kinda know me at the cineworld where I mainly go anyway, I'm one of the regulars....
August 17, 200816 yr They kinda know me at the cineworld where I mainly go anyway, I'm one of the regulars.... Yeah i know...tho when it gets to the point where your so regular at the cinema that the ice-cream dude not only knows what Ben&Jerry's flavor your gonna have before asking but has already got it waiting - maybe getting to point where maybe you should try other sites....
