Teletext Vortex: 12A unsuitable

The main issue I have with The Dark Knight's 12A certificate is the fact that it allows an adult to take a four- year-old to see a film whose content, tone and violence will bore, confuse and disturb. The Dark Knight is not a kids film. by Jon, Warrington

Vortex: History repeating

It seems that cinema history is repeating itself. The 12 certificate was introduced for Tim Burton's Batman in 1989.

Why? Because The Joker's antics were deemed unsuitable for pre-teens. This was changed to a 12A in 2002 for Spider-Man. Now people want it changed back to a 12. Why? Because The Joker's antics are unsuitable for pre-teens! by Charnjit, Leeds

Well theres been a load a discussion in the press and elsewhere about the 12A rating - tho a little of it being Dark Knight fanboys not wanting their beloved film ruined by 5 year old running about  - tho away from the dark knight's ultra-violence you've had reports that one film (Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging) got a 12A with one title and 15 with another (Angus, Thongs and Full-frontal Snogging) and tween-friendly 12A Wild Child gearing up for the after the watershead Mean Girls 9pm film4 slot with all its bloodies, $h!ts, shags and assholes (tho one seemed to come across as an arsss-hole) - language that probs would get complaints from my dad if it was on tv....and a film some would say should have its rating swapped with UK18 rated Britich coming of age film This Is England - which should be widely seen by more  (This Is England - Germany:12, Sweden:11, Ireland:18, Netherlands:16)

so 12A - good thing or bad thing - should it go back to 12, should it be abolished altogether, should the classification be tougher? what should it allow etc etc etc

You'd think parents would have the brains though not to take a 4 year old to see The Dark Knight if they're worried about violence and stuff? Tough luck if the kids wanna see it tbh. If it was a 15 then fair do's, but you'd just get so many pirate copies going around for all the people under 15 who wanna watch it.

I think it should stay a 12A, and not go back to a 12. But I can see the pluses and minuses for a 12 and a 12A.

12a really acts no diffrent to a PG in the cinema, and to make it stupider 12a's when released on dvd get released as just a 12 anyway.
They need to make it a 12 again. 12A like Martyn said is no different from a PG apart from a PG lets anyone aged 9 and over in whereas for a 12A if your 11 or under then you need someone over the age of 18 to accompany you. 12's are fine as 12's once they're on DVD so what makes it any different than in the cinema.

I totally agree - 12A should return to 12, because as people have pointed out, there is no 12A video certificate, so it's really a nonsense.... I was lucky that there were no 'noisy brats' around when I went to see "The Dark Knight", I think I managed to catch the well-behaved breed of kids who usually go to see the Harry Potter films...

Any parent who takes a 4 or 5 year old to see The Dark Knight is, in my opinion, a bit of a tool to be honest, TDK is clearly a darker, more adult film than, say, something like The Mummy or Indiana Jones, younger kids can more easily process these films, but TDK has much more disturbing themes in its text.... I think Nolan should have made it a bit more violent and gone for the 15 Cert tbh....

Wasnt Batman Begins a 15?

I think that was a 12A also...

The Tim Burton Batman films were both 12 (in fact the first Burton Batman film was the reason the 12 cert came into being in the first place..) in cinemas, and then 15 on video... Did neither of these films any harm at all, both were incredibly successful....

yeah tho the DVD might be rated a 15 due to added extras - think Daredevil and Scorpian King both had suffered that fate...tho Wanted should have been a 15 at the cinema and then 18 on DVD if they were worried about glorifying Gun play to younger kids (which i guess why it would have been passed as an 18)

When you first look at it The Dark Knight seems ok but the themes are what should make it a 15, or at least a 12.

And Tigerboy i love it how you always seem to have a picture in your posts
