Posted September 16, 200816 yr It's official - England is the MOST crowded country in Europe, thanks to immigration Independent.co.uk Last updated at 11:27 AM on 16th September 2008 England has become the most crowded major country in Europe, official figures show. The number of people crammed in has overtaken those in Holland, long the most densely-populated major nation on the continent. A count released to MPs showed England now has 395 people per square kilometre. Crowding has increased because of high immigration into England while the Dutch population has fallen or remained steady. Last night MPs who are campaigning for 'balanced migration' said the figures were a milestone in the immigration debate. Beyond Europe, England's population density is among the highest in the world. Of countries with a population of at least 10million, England ranks third in density after Bangladesh (1,045 per sq km) and South Korea (498 per sq km). The English figures were in a Commons written answer from National Statistician Karen Dunnell. Miss Dunnell said that in 2008 the number of people in every square kilometre in Britain was 253 with 395 in England. Latest figures from Holland show that its population density was 395 a square kilometre in 2002 and 393 in 2005. The only country in the European Union with greater crowding is Malta. The Mediterranean island is a special case because it has only 400,000 people, most of whom live around the port of Valletta. The EU's Top 10: Malta 1274 people per square kilometre England 395 Netherland 393 Belgium 341 Germany 232 Italy 195 Luxembourg 177 Czech Republic 129 Denmark 126 Poland 118 Increasing crowding in England is largely concentrated in the South and East, where in recent years the greatest number of migrants have headed to provide labour for agriculture, construction and service industries. Official projections say the population will become even more concentrated in the future. Miss Dunnell's department, the Office for National Statistics, has estimated that English population density will rise to 464 people for every square kilometre by 2031. The new estimates were made public just a week after an unprecedented alliance of all-party public figures called for balanced migration. The campaigners, led by Labour former minister Frank Field and Tory MP Nicholas Soames, have called for the number of foreigners allowed to settle in the country to be held at around the same level as the number who leave. The two MPs said yesterday: 'The Government have now been obliged to recognise that England is projected to catch up with Holland this year as the most crowded country in Europe. 'This is a milestone in the immigration debate as immigration accounts for 70 per cent of our population growth. 'The Government's points-based system places no limit on the number of people who are allowed to settle in the UK. If ever there was a case for balanced migration, it is now.' The Office for National Statistics estimate current net migration into Britain at around 300,000 a year - and calculate that a balanced migration policy would result in a British population of around 65million by 2050. But under the current net migration figures current Government policies would mean a British population of nearly 80 million by then. England has taken its position as the most crowded country in Europe at a point when the risk of economic recession has led to growing concern over diminishing numbers of jobs and pressure on public services. A spokesman for the UK Border Agency, the organisation set up by the Home Office to tighten immigration by admitting only those with skills, said: 'Our tough new points system plus our plans for newcomers to earn their citizenship will reduce overall numbers of economic migrants coming to Britain, and the numbers awarded permanent settlement.' Any Comments? Especially those of you who think the net migration figures into this country is not a problem?
September 16, 200816 yr Tbh do we even know how many people are actually living here at the moment? (an official number).
September 16, 200816 yr Tbh do we even know how many people are actually living here at the moment? (an official number). 50,762,9002 - estimate Where are we in the world in terms of overcrowdedness? (major countries only) I can only think of Japan and Bangladesh that are possibly more overcrowded.
September 16, 200816 yr you know my views.... infact i might merge the 2 similar threads. I don't know your views on this so do merge the threads! (and I forgot India in my original post)
September 16, 200816 yr Why are projected figures from 20 and 40 years used so often in arguing points? Does our country meet forecasts made 20 and 40 years ago?
September 16, 200816 yr Why are projected figures from 20 and 40 years used so often in arguing points? Does our country meet forecasts made 20 and 40 years ago? no... even 5 years ago the predicted migration from eastern europe has been severely under estimated.

September 16, 200816 yr I say send all the immigrants back to where they came from Even those legal ones? The ones that make up most of the doctors and nurses in the NHS and play vital roles in other sections of the superstructure of britain?
September 16, 200816 yr I say send all the immigrants back to where they came from, and it be last crowded Thats a lot easier said than done  . Nowt much we can do about it. There's room where i live :P
September 16, 200816 yr A further breakdown of the figures (not sure how up to date this is but I guess it will be reasonably accurate) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Unite...ulation_density
September 16, 200816 yr Tbh do we even know how many people are actually living here at the moment? (an official number). Yes we know the number of people living here officially. By definition, of course we don't know how many are living here illegally. No government anywhere in the world knows how many illegal immigrants there are in their country.
September 16, 200816 yr I say send all the immigrants back to where they came from, and it be last crowded Every one of us is descended from immigrants - why was it ok then? Cities are getting bigger, 'new towns' are springing up, less of the countryside is uninhabited...of course the population will go up. I agree it's maybe gone a bit far...even in Aberdeen I'm amazed by how often I'll hear people in the supermarket talking in some East European language when five years ago you'd never hear it. One thing's for sure, anyone saying "they come over here and take our jobs" Alf Garnett style while swigging lager bought with their giro can f*** off. If they'd take jobs 'beneath' their status as a Brit then there'd be less opportunities and a reduction in legal immigration...illegal you can never really legislate against. September 16, 200816 yr Every one of us is descended from immigrants - why was it ok then? because it was a gradual intake in a land that had plenty of room for a gradual transformation, no taxes, no health/education service , no benefits... just land to settle and make (by integration) their own. this is exactly how the celts/romans/saxons/vikings and even normans (who were of viking descent anyway) created our country.... like minded people from a like minded gene pool...
September 16, 200816 yr celts/romans/saxons/vikings and even normans Gradual intake? They invaded and took over! Nah, I see your point there.
September 17, 200816 yr Gradual intake? They invaded and took over! Nah, I see your point there. no they didnt! a popular misconception. there was already family/trade links with europe and the influx's were largely peacefull. invaders were in a vast minority and couldnt have 'invaded' us against our will, it needed co-oporation from local 'kings'. the biggest shock to the system was the french(norman) invasion... that WAS a large culture shock, but then again its the old english (saxon) that prevails in our culture. the normans gave us the class system, post conquest lands were divided up and given to french overlords. each of the population changes were over several decades, not 5 years!
September 17, 200816 yr Author Wednesday, 17 September 2008 09:43 UK UK unemployment total rises again BBC News Redundant workers leave an Electrolux plant in Spennymoor last December after its closure was announced More workers are likely to lose their jobs this year The number of people out of work in the UK rose by another 81,000 between May and July, to 1.72 million, according to government figures. That took the official unemployment rate up from 5.3% to 5.5%. The number of people claiming jobseeker's allowance also rose, by 32,500 to 904,900 in August, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said. In a further sign of the economic slowdown, the number of people in work and the number of vacancies both fell. So effectively the number of people officially out of work has risen by over 110,000 in a month to over 2.62 million, what do ou think can be done to reduce this figure?
