Commentary

Leona Lewis advances to #1 ahead of two close challenges from The Saturdays and M.I.A. with the gloriously Americanised and unashamedly 'Sweet Escape' influenced 'Forgive Me', with easily the catchiest chorus I ever expect to hear from the woman :wub: Forgive Me goes down as Leona's second #1, coming almost a year after her first with 'Bleeding Love', which finished as the seventh most successful song of 2007 in my chart despite spending just one week at #1; and goes down as her fourth top five after 'A Moment Like This' (#4, December 2006) and 'Just Stand Up!' (which falls back to #9 this week after peaking at #2 last week). Tailing Leona are The Saturdays with 'Up!', a fantastic slice of pop perfection in the mould of Girls Aloud/Sugababes, and which should've obviously been the first single ahead of the chronic 'If This Is Love', which only managed a #19 debut in early August. Bouncing back to #3 is 'Paper Planes' by M.I.A., currently inching its way towards the #1 spot and up the YTD chart, where it currently resides in fifth place, roughly 300,000 'sales' away from reaching the 2 million mark (which it also breached last year, finishing as my second favourite song of the year on 2.2 million 'sales' - by comparison, my favourite song of the year so far, Goldfrapp's 'A&E', has currently 'sold' just over 2.3 million copies). P!nk jumps up to a new peak of #4 with the rompfest 'So What' ahead of its virtually guaranteed #1 in the official UK charts, and Brandy rounds out the top five with the BJSC-winning 'Right Here (Departed)'. This week's highest new entry and Tip of the Week goes (somewhat predictably) to Britney Spears with the club anthem 'Womanizer' at #7, and looks certain to hit #1 in the coming weeks, although whether 'Circus' will equal 'Blackout's record-smashing 13 non-consecutive week reign atop the album chart has yet to be seen - Womanizer is also of note as it's the first song to receive the Tip of the Week after entering the top 10 after a change in the definition of a 'smash' in my chart, which now only includes top 5s, and the Tip of the Week (for those new to my chart) indicates the song within my chart I believe most likely to become a top 5 smash - due to its nature, it's usually awarded to new entries, and although it is occasionally awarded to climbers it is very rarely awarded to the same song two weeks running. The rest of this week's new entries go to Electrovamp, Jack White & Alicia Keys, James Morrison, Goldfrapp, Kanye West, Jennifer Hudson, Sharleen Spiteri and Late of the Pier; as well as a record-breaking second re-entry for Jordin Sparks' 'Tattoo'. Next week's chart is looking to be a straight fight between this week's top three, with Britney and Brandy possibly adding spice to the equation :o Ah yes, and does anybody know a suitable method for tranquilizing insane French singers?
