This arguing is nonsense, what is rock for one might not be for another. I think defining an act into a certain category is just how one determines it, there really are no guidelines as far as I know. I define Killers alternative/pop(/dance) act, even thou Human is even "softer" track than their usual stuff. In the US Human has been in the Alternative top ten for weeks now but mainstream rock stations would never touch this so I guess if you want to "officially" label it then it would be alternative. But to label tracks/acts, how would one define Hoobastank's The Reason? It made no 1 on alternative, no 4 on mainstream rock, no 1 pop, no 1 adult top 40, and no 17 on adult contemporary. Was it "real rock" or not?

But they're not the same kind of pop as The Saturdays or Girls Aloud are they?

Definitely more alternative, hence why they're in this forum - not just rock: indie, alternative and rock.

Besides, they've got their own forum, so there shouldn't be many threads about them in any other forum anyway to be honest -_-

they ARE pop.... just because watertwat decided to dumb down the original meaning it doesnt make them nontheless pop. the beatles, stones, kinks, slade, trex etc were all 'pop' , what the likes of watertwat refers to as pop should be better called 'c**p'! although many are begining to call it (saturdays, girls aloud etc... manufactured money making products) 'pure' pop..

alternative?... alternative to WHAT?

this mis-use of the original meaning irks me... its WRONG and detracts from the original artists who created the sounds.

no it wasnt/isnt. :)

Oh I'm fed up of arguing. It's obvious I'm not going to agree with any of you so lets just keep it at that.

But if none of you thought the Killers were indie/ alternative/ rock, why did you start the topic IN THIS FORUM in the first place? Why not start it in the Pop forum?

Gah

Spot on... Pete Waterman is/was the enemy of all music lovers, and Cowell/X-Factor continues where he left off... And, indeed, this use of the term "alternative" in relation to acts such as The Killers or My Comical Romance is just an absolute fukkin' oxymoron... How the hell can you be "alternative" and sell millions of records, and be on heavy rotation on MTV...? "Alternative" was a term used to describe the sorts of underground acts (or acts whose origins were certainly underground..) which didn't really play the MTV game so much, the likes of Big Black, Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth, Mudhoney, Smashing Pumpkins, etc.... To put bands like The Killers or MCR in this bracket is wholly ridiculous, they have NEVER been anything other than mainstream pop/rock acts....

"Emo" is another term which makes me laugh... It's meant to mean, what, Emotional..? Well, as Bob Smith said in a recent interview... "I've always written emotional music"...

But if none of you thought the Killers were indie/ alternative/ rock, why did you start the topic IN THIS FORUM in the first place? Why not start it in the Pop forum?

Gah

because thats where they are perceived to be, besides they were what currently passes for 'indie'... 'human' though is rubbish (as an indie track)

exactly...'alternative' meant alternative to the commercial charts! so by definition, if they court the singles chart they arnt alternative!

emo?... said it before, its a bollox expression, in fact id suggest most strongly that modern music is possibly the most soul-less, un emotional , meaningless music thats ever been produced! strewth, acts as diverse as stevie wonder and jimi hendrix played/performed with feeling. emotion.

to be honest, i vote this topic gets moved to Pop.
:yahoo: They're on Jools Holland now performing 'Human' :w00t:

I do agree with Rob

And first of all, why there was several threads in the Alternative forum about the band when we actually have a The Killers forum? This thread ALONE could have been a simple post on this thread the killers...... human, there was no need to create an OMG LESS ROCK THAN GA if you were going to say the same thing.

Now, If this had to be moved, I don´t see why not could be moved to their own forum, I know there´s people who just visit the main forums etc tec, but a global mod could have moved leaving a link to the new topic here to redirect there, so people who didn´t know, will realize there´s a forum, and can comeback to see newer updates.

Probably some of the other AFs wouldn´t be that dead if the same management promote a little like this.

Also, I don´t see why you think people is going to have a go at you for 'dissing' their artist, obviously the fans are the ones who mainly post in their forums, but I don´t think someone is going to go "against you" for saying your opinion, plus you know they will reply, isn´t that DISCUSSION? and that´s why we have moderators there too anyway, isn´t Buzzjack a discussion forum? So what´s the point of having a whole subforum for them ?

The forum is big, but a regular poster/visitor can learn to use the WHOLE board easily with help, it all is nicely organized. ^_^

Anyway, no one listens the AF moderators nowadays, so hey ho.

[/rant]

Btw visit iwubthekillers.com ppl :kink:

well regardless of what tye of music it is or isnt i love the song and i hope its a huge hit,,its been top 10 for 4 weeks here already in ireland so it will climb alot higher when its phyisically released and will become their biggest hit here

People sometimes get flamed for posting a negative thread about an artist on an AF though.... Granted, it doesn't happen so much on an Indie-related one, but it does happen, which is why I feel that posting a 'counter' thread is probably best on one of the more general music Forums... Look at all the sh!t that happened when Rob tried to suggest a Saturdays Forum with 'pro' and 'anti' discussions, the request got pulled FFS... In fact look at the amount of verbals that the likes of myself and Rob took from Saturdays fans (one particular poster going so far as to say that Rob should "p!ss off") when we 'dared' to post anti-Saturdays posts in a GENERAL discussion on the Pop Forum, never mind on a dedicated AF....

There are some seriously immature people who cant handle proper debate out there mate....

Who really cares what genre it is? If you're going to decide how much of a chance you give it according to what it's tagged as, you may as well not bother. It's a great song, pop, rock or whatever else you want to call it.

This topic is major LOLworthy :heehee:

Why do people create such stupid, pointless arguments over, like jark said, something as ridiculously trivial as genre :heehee:

We all know that labels twist and change beyond their original meaning. This is exactly what has happened to "alternative" and "indie". It's pointless whinging about it. Same with "Emo". It's a label that has come to mean a certain kind of music.

I remember when "Garage" was used by the dance crowd as a label when all it meant to me was snotty upstarts in the US aping The Stones and The Yardbirds while plugging in their fuzzboxes.

Labels are labels and are only useful to make sure we're talking about the same thing.

BTW Human is a large pile of doggy-doo. Not a patch on anything that was on Hot Fuss.

Sam's Town was a brilliant album.

Who really cares what genre it is?

I object to things being mislabeled at the end of the day... I mean, put it this way, if you bought a cheap, nasty vodka or whisky that was put in a Smirnoff or Glenfiddich bottle, you'd be well p!ssed off.... Same principle innit....?

And the facts are, this particular Girls Aloud track absolutely SH!TS all over The Killers new tune... GAWD, if only GA wrote an entire album like "Sexy No No No", I might actually go out and buy it.... This track just screams for someone like CombiChrist or Suicide Commando to remix it, a bit of distortion on the vocals (or better yet, get the girls to re-record the vocals in GERMAN... ), and a serious Tuetonic-sounding Jack-hammer bass beat, ooooh MAMA, you'd have an absolutely stonking EBM/Industrial tune which you could easily play in any Fetish or Underground club....

m8... like it or not, the argument about pigeonholing music and inflicting labels is as old as music itself. music IS classified whether you like it or not. tigerboys original topic starter was imho spot on, so yes, it does have a vallied reason.

 oh how nice it would be if life was soooo bloody simplistic... <_< but it AINT.
