Posted November 11, 200817 yr By Ben Cardew (Music Week) The X Factor Finalists’ cover of Hero (Syco) has become the highest-selling single of 2008, after selling another 37,000 copies yesterday. The single, which is released in aid of the Help For Heroes campaign, sold 502,846 copies in its first two weeks of release to put it just behind Duffy’s Mercy (A&M) on 510,999. Yesterday, it added another 37,598 copies to its total, making it the year’s highest-selling single to date on 540,444 units. Mercy itself sold 702 units yesterday. Yesterday’s sales mean that Hero is likely to spend a third week at number one, beating off the challenge from TI’s Live Your Life (Atlantic), which shifted 23,682 copies yesterday. It also takes Hero’s total sales beyond that of Rihanna’s Umbrella, 2007’s second biggest-seller with 512,732 sales Meanwhile, Human by The Killers (Vertigo) is likely to be the highest new entry on the singles chart, and should secure a top five placing. On the albums chart, Il Divo look set to make it a Syco double bill at the top of the charts this Sunday, with their new album The Promise selling 19,541 copies yesterday, some 4,000 ahead of nearest challenger, Stereophonics’ Best Of – Decade In The Sun (Mercury).
