Well I was just thinking about this as I was talking about why HSM is so popular.

So what are your fave Sequels that YOU think are better than the first films of the "franchises" or whatever ?

My faves include Saw 3, Final Destination 3 (Although that's more on par with the first film) & HighSchool Musical 2 (Haven't seen 3)

Aliens was better than Alien! But then it went downhill after that! And I think The Empire Strikes Back was much better than Star Wars. Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan was infinitely better than Star Trek The Motion Picture.

The Godfather Part Two was superb... Even more layered and richly detailed than the first (Part Three is pretty cr@p though)... "Empire Strikes Back" is usually regarded as being the best of the original Star Wars trilogy... And although not a sequel per se, more a follow-up, I have to admit to having a preference for "Letters From Iwo Jima" over "Flags of our Fathers" (which is a great film also I must stress) simply because it is one of the very few films which has the courage to tell the story of the Pacific conflict in WW2 from the Japanese perspective... I think director Clint Eastwood deserves our utter admiration for such a worthwhile, powerful and incredibly moving effort... Both films are admirable however for how they absolutely refused to be "gung-ho" in how they portrayed war, concentrating instead on how war profoundly affects the young men who fight and die in conflicts...
Aliens was better than Alien!

I have to disagree with that.... While I enjoyed Aliens immensely and quite liked the "action" direction that James Cameron took with the film, I have to say that there is really nothing in "Aliens" which tops the imagery, mood and atmosphere of Ridley Scott's absolutely astounding, and incredibly artistic original film.... I just think that Scott's film is a lot more elegant than Cameron's....

And there really was nothing in ANY of the sequels that topped the sheer unexpected horror of the "chest burst" scene in the original film, that is a classic scene which very few horror films has even managed to equal..

28 Weeks Later. True, the first might appear better because its original. 28 Weeks Later could've been really shoddy, but it turned out amazing and slightly better than the first, which was amazing too!

I have to stand by my feeling on Aliens. I've seen them both several times and although the first film is certainly atmospheric and the acting superb (Yaphet Kotto especially) I just felt a bit tighter editing and clearer images in bits could have given it a huge boost.

With regard to the chest burst scene - yes - it was fabulous ... but then the makers ruined it by having the think snarl like a bald kitten and the scurry across the table top like a wind-up toy - and I remember loads of laughter at that bit when I first saw it in the cinema. It is probably that one scene that really lets down a superb sci-fi/horror film.

I was always a bit disappointed with the ending of "28 Days Later".. A seriously fantastic opening 75 minutes or so, which was slightly let down by the final act... Indeed, "28 Weeks.." could have been complete garbage, but it wasn't... It was a damn good film in its own right, an equal as opposed to a sequel....

None of the Saw films even come close to the first.

IMO, 28 days was a true modern classic horror, where as 28 weeks was complete w***, i dont think i have ever been so dissapointed, bad acting (par Caryle) and a lame storyline.

Was that 'The Spy Who Shagged Me'? I got that for my mum's birthday a good few years back! She was in her 70's at the time - she said it made her feel 10 years younger!

Its already been said on this tread about T2. The original Terminator was c**p compared to the the second. The original was just so cheesy and complicated...

I think Halloween 2 is at least on par with the first...

miss congeniality 2 was miles better than the 1st one
