At the start of 2008, the BBC sound of 2008 poll was carried out, which predicted which artists would be big in 2008. For the first time since the inception of this poll in 2003, 20 artists were selected (instead of the usual 10). They are listed as follows, together with the peak positions of their hits (#s in brackets refer to 2007 or earlier hits, and #s in asterisks indicate featured credits):

1 Adele 2-18-19-26

2 Duffy 45-1-3-21-15

3 Ting Tings 1-33-6-28

4 Glasvegas 16-12

5 Foals (39)-26

6 Vampire Weekend 55-38

7 Joe Lean & The Jing Jang Jong 43

8 Black Kids 11-36

9 MGMT 35-22-25

10 Santogold 27

11 Ida Maria 13

12 One Night Only (46)-9-37-55

13 Alphabeat 6-16-15

14 Laura Marling no top 75 hits

15 Cajun Dance Party no top 75 hits

16 Courteeners (44)-20-19-35-36

17 Gabriella Cilmi 6-33-22

18 Late Of The Pier no top 75 hits

19 Black Mountain no top 75 hits

20 Lil' Wayne (*4*)-(*23*)-(*45*)-(*66*)-26-*34*-*33*-*59*-57

Compared to previous years:

* All of the top 10 managed top 75 hits (as in all previous years)

* 9 of the top 10 managed top 40 hits (best showing since 2004 when all 10 managed top 40 hits)

* 5 of the top 10 managed top 20 hits (1 better than 2007 and equalling 2006)

* 3 of the top 10 managed top 10 hits (worst showing since 2003)

* 3 of the top 10 managed top 5 hits (1 more than 2007, and equalling 2006)

* 3 of the top 10 managed top 3 hits (joint best showing along with 2003 and 2004)

* 2 of the top 10 managed #1 hits (no previous year has included more than 1 chart-topper)

And the misses (all of these artists managed at least 2 top 20 hits in 2008 having never previously managed a top 20 hit or released an album):

Platnum

Flo-Rida

Taio Cruz (although he first reached the top 30 in 2006)

Script

Katy Perry

Saturdays

can you imagine Platnum having made this list

The Script slipped under the BBC radar a tad didn't they!?!

the misses are the ones that 'broke through' without having been predicted to do so by the BBC

Too Right they did! i'm so happy bout The Scripts success though

Hmm... so N-dubz ain't included because Feva Las Vegas (only Top 75) charted in 2006/07?

Seeing how Late Of The Pier made all their singles chart ineligible; or on iTunes you have to buy as a mini album bundle, then they are hardly failures growing a very healthy fanbase underneath the chart radar.

Whilst Laura Marling has had a critically acclaimed Mercury Music Award nominated album that features in many Album Of The Year round ups. Also her vocals featured on Top 40 hits this year for Noah & The Whale & Mystery Jets.

Hardly earth shattering powers of predicting: they got the bleeding obvious right (Duffy, Adele, Ting Tings) missed a few (Script, Katy Perry) and a few of their tips had no success in 2008.

5 Years Time #7.

Tbh 19 of the acts have had quite a bit of success (maybe not chart-wise, but critical acclaim and gig-wise) this year. Although Jing Jang Jon have messed up a little bit. I think they scrapped the first album LOL.

The BBC only want to include artists who they feel are credible though so even if they were aware of Platnum, Katy Perry & The Saturdays, there's a good chance of them not being included anyway.

Anyway, another one they missed who's had a bit of sucsess this year is David Jordan, though his first single did flop in 2007 so maybe they thought that was the end of him.

It's made up of critics though. And most of them base it on 7" releases from last year, and acts that they see getting a load of hype. Platnum and The Saturdays certainly don't fit that catergory, and the list has a very British bias to it, hence why there's no Katy Perry... critics always miss certain acts off though. They're only making guesses at the end of the day.

Pretty much all of them had a bit of success - chart peaks aren't everything! Santogold, Vampire Weekend and Laura Marling are pretty popular in this country despite a notable lack of chart success...

But look at the acts in there. They're all hyped and releasing early in the year, just like the 2009 list is. Who'd heard of Katy Perry or The Script last December?

No one, I even haven't heard of any of this until today!

Well the same could be said for most of the acts on that list, unless you were particularly knowledgeable or into a particular genre(s).

Its highly doubtful radio1 was totally oblivious to The Script and Katy Perry! I guess it just depends on what dubious criteria they use to concoct their top20 as to their omission.

Radio 1 have nothing to do with the list as a whole! It's done my music critics. Like it was said earlier, The Script didn't have any hype about them last year, and while i'm sure Katy Perry did (with Ur So Gay I think?) i'm not sure anyone thought she'd have a massive #1 single around the world...

That’s my point it is not the definitive be all and end all. Neither is it completely infallible.

It was glaringly obvious that Adele, Duffy and The Ting Tings were going to be big in 2008. I don’t dispute that it’s weighted towards acts that are going to release in the first part of the year.

While Glasvegas and Courteneers have had hits this year they are still very much niche and haven’t crossed over to the mainstream.

Gabriella Cilmi was saved by two adverts. Alphabeat had one top10 hit and two more minor ones before being dropped.

While it’s a good guide for people to listen to promising new talent, in the end it was hardly ‘the sound of 2008’.

How much input do these music critics/experts actually put into the poll? Do they submit their top20 tips, which are then combined, or are they just asked to rank a list of pre-selected acts? Are all voices equal or are some more weighted because they’re more in with the powers that be at radio1? Is the list filtered to fit with their play list policy for the next 3/6 months?

I still think Duffy should have won the Critics Award over Adele, Adele's album is a bit bland for my taste, I only like 3 tracks on it. Rockferry walks all over it.
