No its not. The Promise stayed at no.1 for 1 week, SOTU for 4 weeks. You cant define The Promise as their biggest hit in anyway. It was their biggest in 5 years, but not EVER and thats what this thread says.

But you're not listening to what is being said.Yes SOTU is their biggest selling hit and their longest run at #1 but I wouldn't call it their biggest hit. "A Moment Like This" is Leona's second biggest hit in terms of sales and time spent at #1 but I'm sure the public will find "Run" and "Better In Time" to be more memorable hits.

"The Promise" was the first GA single to get their on merit, the first being a reality show launch single and the others were charity singles. Therefore I see it as their first "proper" #1 and therefore their biggest hit.

there is a very blurry line really between peak position/sales and public regard for a song to define what is somebody's biggest hit

I would regard Leave Right Now as Will Young's 'biggest hit' despite having much lower sales and weeks at No.1 than Evergreen...it is the song that he is by far best remembered for and rightfully so

but if we are basing this on weeks spent at No.1 and total sales then yes, Sound Of The Underground is bigger than The Promise

I'd definitely call "Leave Right Now" Will Young's biggest hit, good example.

I'm gonna have to think about this one a bit longer.

Fergie came straight to mind before even opening the thread but I'm unsure on any others atm...

And I would regard a biggest hit as one that charted the highest [though if an artist has had multiple songs chart at no1 for example. I'd classify the best selling or the one with the most cultural impact as the biggest].

Snow Patrol for example have had a no4 and a no5 but I'd say 'Chasing Cars' has to be their biggest.

No mention at all of Bleeding Love then? :heehee:

But yes, I would agree on this point that The Promise will probably be remembered as their biggest hit if they don't manage to make number one again...which I think is unlikely, but there ya go ;o

three more examples of acts having their 'biggest' hits with lower peaking singles (although there are hundreds more):

Lemar - If There's Any Justice (#3) highest peak - Dance (With U) (#2)

Savage Garden - Truly Madly Deeply (#4) highest peak - To The Moon & Back (#3)

Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars (#6) highest peak - Signal Fire (#4)

The Hoosiers

#05 Worried About Ray

#04 Goodbye Mr A

#76 Worst Case Scenario

#24 Cops And Robbers

I'm not sure whether GMA or WAR has sold more though

Nut GMA reached a position higher than WAR...

this is my argument for The Promise vs. SOTU

This happens quite commonly - an artist will release a slower burning and huge single, then follow up with a quickie higher charting hit that is nowhere near as good as the previous hit.

because that's her biggest hit. I meant that just because "A Moment Like This" is her second biggest selling hit, doesn't mean it's her second most remembered. Then Rich used the Will Young exampl which is much better.

although it's not so common now as people generally reach higher positions on song merit now as opposed to artist hype

it happened an awful lot in the earlier part of the decade

Yeah, the Savage Garden songs you used are a prome example. Another example at the time was Peter ANdre (although both songs are utter $h!te!) Mysterious Girl was #2 in summer 96, then Flava got to #1 in the autumn (I know MG was #1 in 2004 as well...). Countelss examples spring to mind....

Dance was Lemar's debut was it not? If There's Any Justice was the lead-off for his second album IIRC...

Yes, it was - obvs he isn't included in my thoery. Lemar has done better than I thought actually!

this is a really bad example...but coldplay had their biggest hit with VIVA LA VIDA and then LOST was utterly lost amidst other charting songs

That's not a bad example - I already used it

How about Adele? She has a #2 hit with CP and then CS peaked at #18 and i think HG, her third single, peaked higher than CS.

I think Hometowm peaked one place lower than Cold Shoulder? :(

'Hometown Glory' made #19, however her most recent single made #26.

RACHEL STEVENS

SWEET DREAMS MY LA EX

#2

FUNKYDORY

#26

I remember being very shocked at FD's chart position, i was thinking low top 10 but 26?
