The best selling VA Compilation was "Now That`s What I Call Music"...the very first one. It was the 21st Combined best seller was of the year. Due for a 25th Anniversary re-issue next month.

Let`s take a look at the weekly album chart for December 1983:

19 NE GREEN VELVET - VARIOUS

20 20 GREATEST HITS - MARVIN GAYE

Motown was doing well here in 1983. Although both Marvin Gaye, and Diana Ross` albums were on Telstar. A lot of the Decmber albums figured in the year end chart, as we find out. JEAN MICHEL JARRE will never go away it seems, a talent musician but slightly over doing Oxygene, what! BILLY JOEL already a top 5 album in 1983, managed to re-rise throughout 1984. U2 having their first live album, and chart topper too. TRACEY ULLMAN had been a big single success in 83, and the album didn`t do that badly either. Paul McCartney hid the heights of a uk number one single in early 1984, and the said album could have predicted that. Televised Adverts plugged all those Ronco, K-tel, and Telstar albums.

Let`s have a look at the best selling singles of the entire year in 1983:

01 KARMA CHAMELEON - CULTURE CLUB

02 RED RED WINE - UB40

38 36 THIS CHARMING MAN - THE SMITHS

39 37 CHRISTMAS SPECTRE - JINGLE BELLES

40 39 RUNNING WITH THE NIGHT - LIONEL RICHIE

3 weeks at the top for the FLYING PICKETS there! They kept SLADE off the top, but that didn`t bother Noddy, Dave, and the boys...rereleases of MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY kept them going all through the 80s! CULTURE CLUB doing the double, with 2 hits in the chart. VICTIMS got to number 2 on MRIB`s top 50. PAUL YOUNG covered NICKY THOMAS from 1970. 2 hits also in, for BILLY JOEL. STATUS QUO ever popular, and another top 3 hit on the way. KENNY ROGERS teamed up with DOLLY PARTON...and people misheard the words as "ISLANDS INDUSTRY". The THOMPSON TWINS were doing great all through`83, even though a threesome! TINA TURNER covered AL GREEN`s 1971 hit. MICHAEL JACKSON let THRILLER out as a single, maybe a bad idea. HOWARD JONES seemed to be slipping, but WHAT IS LOVE smashed up the top 3, at the start of 1984. CLIFF had his almost seasonal hit. THE PRETENDERS maybe issue 2000 MILES, a bit late. UB40 did indeed find MANY RIVERS TO CROSS, as they stalled at 16. BARRY MANILOW singing MEAT LOAF?! KOOL AND THE GANG began to slow down, with hits. MINDER was the top ITV show after Coronation Street, and This Is Your Life...and gave DENNIS WATERMAN his 2nd hit. Containing the line by GEORGE COLE "Is That Carol singing"...."I wish she`d stop!" ROLAND RAT saved TV-AM in the early days, so the rapping rodent tried his hand at the charts. THAT`S ALL should`ve been bigger for GENESIS. WHAM gathered together some early songs, rapped it around a version of prevoius hit for the MIRACLES "LOVE MACHINE", and scored a top 20 hit. FRANK KELLY was later to appear in FATHER TED, of course...in `83 he paroded with a take on the 12 days of Christmas, discovering that partridges, French hens, maids, and pipers etc did not get on! MARILYN was a mate of BOY GEORGE, and no women in sight! Glossing over Shakin`Stevenss who was having problems with his R`s again! SWEET SURRENDER sung ROD STEWART...that one never turns up today. In 1983, a Radio 1 top 40, had it down as SWEET SURREINDEER! I wonder if it had a red nose! TEARS FOR FEARS "THE WAY YOU ARE" is rather forgotten today. ELVIS slid in with an old hit...covered in 1974 by BILLY SWANN. THE JINGLE BELLES payed homeage to a PHIL SPECTOR medley...coinciding with a re-issue of Phil`s Christmas Album at 22 in the album chart. ELTON JOHN`s song was really about Christmas, as it stated "It was cold as Christmas, in the middle of July"...Elton got the spot, on the Christmas Day edition of THE TWO RONNIES...this programme also featured a parody on The Wizard Of Oz, where Ronnie Barker appeared in the TARDIS dressed as WORZEL GUMMIDGE, in relation to JON PERTWEE`s previous DR WHO role...WORZEL then goes off down the yellow brick road, all very confusing! KEITH HARRIS had his own BBC series, on Saturdays in 1983...be glad that Gallup did not produce a chart that week, because "COME TO MY PARTY" failed to make the BBC Top 40...what a shame! In the words of Keith Harris` other invention "Cuddles" (the pink monkey) "I hate that duck!"

Remember there will not be a weekly countdown referred to on Radio One, at all this week. Even though, the "experts" of Fearne and Reggie will play 40 records in 3 hours, for once....

I will be back for the up to minute new weekly singles chart, soon...but first the most up to date top 50 sellers of 2008:

Nice to see Wall-E climb on the DVD chart. Gave it to my other half for Christmas... never been so emotionally affected by an animated movie before! Decided now it's my favourite film of the year, just ahead of Mamma Mia, which is a little bit ahead of Juno.

Pink should go higher with Sober in the pre orders

thanks as ever Dave for these charts, and a belated Merry Christmas too

I'm sure I asked once before but can't remember the answer you gave... the MRIB charts - what sales week did they have back then, (in 1983 in this instance)? Was it Monday to Thursday? It might explain how MRIB had a chart for December 31, 1983 - that would be sales for Monday December 19 to Thursday December 22, 1983 which may have allowed a chart to be compiled before the Christmas shutdown the industry normally had back then. Gallup's sales week would have ran to Saturday December 24, 1983 and thus they probably just didn't bother with a new chart for the following week as the Monday and Tuesday the following week were Bank Holidays - it would have delayed the new chart until late Wednesday / early Thursday.

Thanks for posting this each week. You do a great job. I find it very fascinating!

Interesting to see Kid Cudi is getting more pre-orders than Lady Gaga. What stores are included in the pre-order chart out of curiousity?

Also great that you post the top physicals each week. I am probably in the minority now but i do still like to look at that chart. That top 10 physical of the year is quite surprising, i mean terry wogan at #3? :o Plus Oasis in the top 10!

It was indeed Mon-Thurs for MRIB. In vain to compete with other charts, Melody Maker changed their chart compilation too. I believe the MM Charts took sales from Fri - Thurs from 1983 onwards. Previously NME were ahead of Melody Maker between 1969-82. In those years MM`s chart ran Weds-Tues, and NME Thurs-Weds. You already know of course, that MRIB evolved from Record Business Magazine`s old team and the late Barry Lazell.

Yep, I believe quite a few people like to see the physical chart even though figures have fallen, so much! Stores included in the pre-order chart are mainly HMV, but I now also have someone giving me some of the pre-orders at other download sites. Meaning that the "Next Week Chart" feature will improve rapidly as 2009 come`s along...

Thanks for posting, pretty odd seeing those Xmas tracks floating back up the chart, especially Chris Rea, how odd

I wonder if Eartha Kitt makes a late appearance with Santa Baby sadly she passed away yesterday

I could see that. It being Christmas, that song has been immortalised forever as her swansong. Though I wish Where Is My Man from the 80s would rechart...
