Posted December 25, 200816 yr Welcome to the usual Friday selection of end of week charts. As usual the top films, dvds, tv, albums, a flashback, and the up to minute singles chart. An added bonus this week because I have the most up to date top selling singles, and albums of 2008 too. Not forgetting the top sellers in the flashback chart year as well. Who else would give a new chart on a Bank Holiday?...Only Buzzjack, folks! We trust everyone had a decent Christmas, and took some caution in not to over eat/drink! :teresa: Straight on to the top films, this week: w/k ending 31st Dec 01 NE TWILIGHT taking £2,508,422 02 02 MADAGASCAR 03 03 4 CHRISTMASES 04 01 DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL 05 NE TASTE OF DESPEREAUX taking £560,870 06 04 INKHEART 07 05 RAB NE BANA DI JODI 08 07 CHANGELING 09 08 QUANTUM OF SOLACE 10 06 TRANSPORTER 3 The top dvd films: 01 02 MAMMA MIA 02 01 DARK KNIGHT 03 03 HANCOCK 04 10 WALL.E 05 04 HELLBOY 2 06 06 KUNG FU PANDA 07 07 INDIANA JONES KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL 08 08 ANGUS THONGS 09 09 MUMMY TOMB OF THE EMPEROR... 10 05 STAR WARS CLONE WARS The top tv related dvds: 01 BIG: LEE EVANS 02 SPECIAL K PETER KAY 03 JEREMY CLARKSON THRILLER 04 MICHAEL MCINTYRE 05 FRANKIE BOYLE 06 THE SNOWMAN 07 BILL BAILEY 08 RICHARD HAMMOND`S TOP GEAR STUNT 09 FAMILY GUY 7 10 JIMMY CARR The top tv programmes: 01 02 X FACTOR 14.06M 02 01 CORONATION STREET 10.41M 03 04 STRICTLY COME DANCING 10.37M 04 05 EASTENDERS 10.35M 05 NE GIRLS ALOUD PARTY 8.65M 06 08 TOP GEAR 7.54M 07 07 EMMERDALE 7.36M 08 NE BBC SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR 6.75M 09 06 HARRY HILL`S TV BURP 6.29M 10 NE SPOOKS 5.95M The top films are compiled by Screen International for UK Box Office. Lets`s take a flashback in 1983. Let`s start with the top 15 albums of that entire year: 01 THRILLER - MICHAEL JACKSON 02 LET`S DANCE - DAVID BOWIE 03 COLOUR BY NUMBERS - CULTURE CLUB 04 NO PARLEZ - PAUL YOUNG 05 TRUE - SPANDAU BALLET 06 FANTASTIC - WHAM 07 BUSINESS AS USUAL - MEN AT WORK 08 SYNCHRONICITY - THE POLICE 09 GENESIS - GENESIS 10 18 GREATEST HITS - MICHAEL JACKSON/JACKSON 5 11 SWEET DREAMS ARE MADE OF THIS - EURYTHMICS 12 CAN`T SLOW DOWN - LIONEL RICHIE 13 LABOUR OF LOVE - UB40 14 THE LUXURY GAP - HEAVEN 17 15 THE HURTING - TEARS FOR FEARS THRILLER topping the best selling lists of 1983, possibly the biggest in the world. The rest of the top 20 of 1983 featured Elaine Paige, Beach Boys, Elton John, The Jam, and Duran Duran. The best selling VA Compilation was "Now That`s What I Call Music"...the very first one. It was the 21st Combined best seller was of the year. Due for a 25th Anniversary re-issue next month. Let`s take a look at the weekly album chart for December 1983: w/k ending 31st Dec 01 03 NO PARLEZ - PAUL YOUNG 02 04 NOW THAT`S WHAT I CALL MUSIC 03 01 THRILLER - MICHAEL JACKSON 04 02 COLOUR BY NUMBERS - CULTURE CLUB 05 08 CAN`T SLOW DOWN - LIONEL RICHIE 06 06 STAGES - ELAINE PAIGE 07 10 GENESIS - GENESIS 08 25 ESSENTIAL - JEAN MICHEL JARRE 09 05 UNDER A BLOOD RED SKY - U2 10 10 FORMULA 30 - VARIOUS 11 07 SEVEN AND THE RAGGED TIGER - DURAN DURAN 12 13 LABOUR OF LOVE - UB40 13 09 FANTASTIC - WHAM 14 11 AN INNOCENT MAN - BILLY JOEL 15 12 TOUCH - EURYTHMICS 16 22 PIPES OF PEACE - PAUL MCCARTNEY 17 NE PORTRAIT - DIANA ROSS 18 20 YOU BROKE MY HEART IN 17 PLACES - TRACEY ULLMAN 19 NE GREEN VELVET - VARIOUS 20 20 GREATEST HITS - MARVIN GAYE Motown was doing well here in 1983. Although both Marvin Gaye, and Diana Ross` albums were on Telstar. A lot of the Decmber albums figured in the year end chart, as we find out. JEAN MICHEL JARRE will never go away it seems, a talent musician but slightly over doing Oxygene, what! BILLY JOEL already a top 5 album in 1983, managed to re-rise throughout 1984. U2 having their first live album, and chart topper too. TRACEY ULLMAN had been a big single success in 83, and the album didn`t do that badly either. Paul McCartney hid the heights of a uk number one single in early 1984, and the said album could have predicted that. Televised Adverts plugged all those Ronco, K-tel, and Telstar albums. Let`s have a look at the best selling singles of the entire year in 1983: 01 KARMA CHAMELEON - CULTURE CLUB 02 RED RED WINE - UB40 03 UPTOWN GIRL - BILLY JOEL 04 LET`S DANCE - DAVID BOWIE 05 TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART - BONNIE TYLER 06 TRUE - SPANDAU BALLET 07 DOWN UNDER - MEN AT WORK 08 BILLIE JEAN - MICHAEL JACKSON 09 ALL NIGHT LONG - LIONEL RICHIE 10 SWEET DREAMS ARE MADE OF THIS - EURYTHMICS 11 YOU CAN`T HURRY LOVE - PHIL COLLINS 12 TOO SHY - KAJAGOOGOO 13 WHEREVER I LAY MY HEART - PAUL YOUNG 14 EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE - THE POLICE 15 IS THERE SOMETHING I SHOULD KNOW - DURAN DURAN 16 GIVE IT UP - KC AND THE SUNSHINE BAND 17 BLUE MONDAY - NEW ORDER 18 I.O.U. - FREEEZ 19 BABY JANE - ROD STEWART 20 THEY DON`T KNOW - TRACEY ULLMAN 21 SAY SAY SAY - PAUL MCCARTNEY/MICHAEL JACKSON 22 WORDS - FR DAVID 23 TONIGHT I CELEBRATE MY LOVE FOR YOU - PEABO BRYSON/ROBERTA FLACK 24 BAD BOYS - WHAM 25 FLASHDANCE - IRENE CARA 26 NEW SONG - HOWARD JONES 27 MOONLIGHT SHADOW - MIKE OLDFIELD 28 SIGN OF THE TIMES - BELLE STARS 29 CANDY GIRL - NEW EDITION 30 TEMPTATION - HEAVEN 17 CULTURE CLUB doing amazing things in 1983`s best sellers, and re-rising in the weekly chart, as we find out: Now this week in 1983...Gallup did not produce a weekly chart, MRIB did though... 01 01 ONLY YOU - FLYING PICKETS 02 03 MY OH MY - SLADE 03 02 VICTIMS - CULTURE CLUB 04 04 LOVE OF THE COMMON PEOPLE - PAUL YOUNG 05 05 TELL HER ABOUT IT - BILLY JOEL 06 09 MARGUERITA TIME - STATUS QUO 07 08 ISLANDS IN THE STREAM - KENNY ROGERS/DOLLY PARTON 08 06 HOLD ME NOW - THOMPSON TWINS 09 07 LET`S STAY TOGETHER - TINA TURNER 10 13 THRILLER - MICHAEL JACKSON 11 11 WHAT IS LOVE - HOWARD JONES 12 22 PIPES OF PEACE - PAUL MCCARTNEY 13 10 PLEASE DON`T FALL IN LOVE - CLIFF RICHARD 14 12 MOVE OVER DARLING - TRACEY ULLMAN 15 15 2000 MILES - PRETENDERS 16 17 MANY RIVERS TO CROSS - UB40 17 16 READ `EM AND WEEP - BARRY MANILOW 18 14 UPTOWN GIRL - BILLY JOEL 19 20 MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY - SLADE 20 23 STRAIGHT AHEAD - KOOL AND THE GANG 21 29 WHAT WE GONNA GET `ER IN DOORS - DENNIS WATERMAN/GEORGE COLE 22 30 RAT RAPPING - ROLAND RAT/KEVIN THE GERBIL 23 18 THAT`S ALL - GENESIS 24 19 CLUB FANTASTIC MEGAMIX - WHAM 25 41 CHRISTMAS COUNTDOWN - FRANK KELLY 26 21 CALLING YOUR NAME - MARILYN 27 25 CRY JUST A LITTLE BIT - SHAKIN`STEVENS 28 33 SWEET SURRENDER - ROD STEWART 29 24 WATERFRONT - SIMPLE MINDS 30 34 COLD AS CHRISTMAS - ELTON JOHN 31 42 RELAX - FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD 32 26 SAY SAY SAY - MCCARTNEY/JACKSON 33 27 RIGHT BY YOUR SIDE - EURYTHMICS 34 38 KARMA CHAMELEON - CULTURE CLUB 35 32 THE WAY YOU ARE - TEARS FOR FEARS 36 43 I CAN HELP - ELVIS PRESLEY 37 NE COME TO MY PARTY - KEITH HARRIS AND ORVILLE 38 36 THIS CHARMING MAN - THE SMITHS 39 37 CHRISTMAS SPECTRE - JINGLE BELLES 40 39 RUNNING WITH THE NIGHT - LIONEL RICHIE 3 weeks at the top for the FLYING PICKETS there! They kept SLADE off the top, but that didn`t bother Noddy, Dave, and the boys...rereleases of MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY kept them going all through the 80s! CULTURE CLUB doing the double, with 2 hits in the chart. VICTIMS got to number 2 on MRIB`s top 50. PAUL YOUNG covered NICKY THOMAS from 1970. 2 hits also in, for BILLY JOEL. STATUS QUO ever popular, and another top 3 hit on the way. KENNY ROGERS teamed up with DOLLY PARTON...and people misheard the words as "ISLANDS INDUSTRY". The THOMPSON TWINS were doing great all through`83, even though a threesome! TINA TURNER covered AL GREEN`s 1971 hit. MICHAEL JACKSON let THRILLER out as a single, maybe a bad idea. HOWARD JONES seemed to be slipping, but WHAT IS LOVE smashed up the top 3, at the start of 1984. CLIFF had his almost seasonal hit. THE PRETENDERS maybe issue 2000 MILES, a bit late. UB40 did indeed find MANY RIVERS TO CROSS, as they stalled at 16. BARRY MANILOW singing MEAT LOAF?! KOOL AND THE GANG began to slow down, with hits. MINDER was the top ITV show after Coronation Street, and This Is Your Life...and gave DENNIS WATERMAN his 2nd hit. Containing the line by GEORGE COLE "Is That Carol singing"...."I wish she`d stop!" ROLAND RAT saved TV-AM in the early days, so the rapping rodent tried his hand at the charts. THAT`S ALL should`ve been bigger for GENESIS. WHAM gathered together some early songs, rapped it around a version of prevoius hit for the MIRACLES "LOVE MACHINE", and scored a top 20 hit. FRANK KELLY was later to appear in FATHER TED, of course...in `83 he paroded with a take on the 12 days of Christmas, discovering that partridges, French hens, maids, and pipers etc did not get on! MARILYN was a mate of BOY GEORGE, and no women in sight! Glossing over Shakin`Stevenss who was having problems with his R`s again! SWEET SURRENDER sung ROD STEWART...that one never turns up today. In 1983, a Radio 1 top 40, had it down as SWEET SURREINDEER! I wonder if it had a red nose! TEARS FOR FEARS "THE WAY YOU ARE" is rather forgotten today. ELVIS slid in with an old hit...covered in 1974 by BILLY SWANN. THE JINGLE BELLES payed homeage to a PHIL SPECTOR medley...coinciding with a re-issue of Phil`s Christmas Album at 22 in the album chart. ELTON JOHN`s song was really about Christmas, as it stated "It was cold as Christmas, in the middle of July"...Elton got the spot, on the Christmas Day edition of THE TWO RONNIES...this programme also featured a parody on The Wizard Of Oz, where Ronnie Barker appeared in the TARDIS dressed as WORZEL GUMMIDGE, in relation to JON PERTWEE`s previous DR WHO role...WORZEL then goes off down the yellow brick road, all very confusing! KEITH HARRIS had his own BBC series, on Saturdays in 1983...be glad that Gallup did not produce a chart that week, because "COME TO MY PARTY" failed to make the BBC Top 40...what a shame! In the words of Keith Harris` other invention "Cuddles" (the pink monkey) "I hate that duck!" Remember there will not be a weekly countdown referred to on Radio One, at all this week. Even though, the "experts" of Fearne and Reggie will play 40 records in 3 hours, for once.... I will be back for the up to minute new weekly singles chart, soon...but first the most up to date top 50 sellers of 2008: 50 LOVE LOCKDOWN - KANYE WEST 49 USE SOMEBODY - KINGS OF LEON 48 GREATEST DAY - TAKE THAT 47 WORK - KELLY ROWLAND 46 WHEN I GROW UP - PUSSYCAT DOLLS 45 FOREVER - CHRIS BROWN 44 PIECE OF ME - BRITNEY SPEARS 43 RULE THE WORLD - TAKE THAT 42 FASCINATION - ALPHABEAT 41 INFINITY 08 - GURU JOSH PROJECT 40 LIVE YOUR LIFE - T.I/RIHANNA 39 WITH YOU - CHRIS BROWN 38 STOP AND STARE - ONE REPUBLIC 37 HUMAN - KILLERS 36 BETTER IN TIME/FOOTSTEPS IN THE SAND - LEONA LEWIS 35 WOMANIZER - BRITNEY SPEARS 34 WEARING MY ROLEX - WILEY 33 CRY FOR YOU - SEPTEMBER 32 WARWICK AVENUE - DUFFY 31 LOVE IN THIS CLUB - USHER/YOUNG JEEZY 30 HEARTBREAKER - WILL I. December 26, 200816 yr Thanks Dave Nice to see Wall-E climb on the DVD chart. Gave it to my other half for Christmas... never been so emotionally affected by an animated movie before! Decided now it's my favourite film of the year, just ahead of Mamma Mia, which is a little bit ahead of Juno.

December 26, 200816 yr thanks as ever Dave for these charts, and a belated Merry Christmas too I'm sure I asked once before but can't remember the answer you gave... the MRIB charts - what sales week did they have back then, (in 1983 in this instance)? Was it Monday to Thursday? It might explain how MRIB had a chart for December 31, 1983 - that would be sales for Monday December 19 to Thursday December 22, 1983 which may have allowed a chart to be compiled before the Christmas shutdown the industry normally had back then. Gallup's sales week would have ran to Saturday December 24, 1983 and thus they probably just didn't bother with a new chart for the following week as the Monday and Tuesday the following week were Bank Holidays - it would have delayed the new chart until late Wednesday / early Thursday.
December 26, 200816 yr Thanks for posting this each week. You do a great job. I find it very fascinating! Interesting to see Kid Cudi is getting more pre-orders than Lady Gaga. What stores are included in the pre-order chart out of curiousity? Also great that you post the top physicals each week. I am probably in the minority now but i do still like to look at that chart. That top 10 physical of the year is quite surprising, i mean terry wogan at #3? :o Plus Oasis in the top 10!

It was indeed Mon-Thurs for MRIB. In vain to compete with other charts, Melody Maker changed their chart compilation too. I believe the MM Charts took sales from Fri - Thurs from 1983 onwards. Previously NME were ahead of Melody Maker between 1969-82. In those years MM`s chart ran Weds-Tues, and NME Thurs-Weds. You already know of course, that MRIB evolved from Record Business Magazine`s old team and the late Barry Lazell.

Yep, I believe quite a few people like to see the physical chart even though figures have fallen, so much! Stores included in the pre-order chart are mainly HMV, but I now also have someone giving me some of the pre-orders at other download sites. Meaning that the "Next Week Chart" feature will improve rapidly as 2009 come`s along...
December 26, 200816 yr Thanks for posting, pretty odd seeing those Xmas tracks floating back up the chart, especially Chris Rea, how odd  I wonder if Eartha Kitt makes a late appearance with Santa Baby sadly she passed away yesterday
December 27, 200816 yr I could see that. It being Christmas, that song has been immortalised forever as her swansong. Though I wish Where Is My Man from the 80s would rechart...
