Look`s like Martin could be right about Lady GaGa...Now there`s a first! :o Last Monday we got 38 in the top 40 albums, but only 36 in the top 50 singles...because the dying Christmas Songs faded on Boxing Day! Back in late December 1981, Radio Luxembourg came up with the following: 01 12 YOUNG TURKS - ROD STEWART 02 08 LAND OF MAKE BELIEVE - BUCKS FIZZ 03 28 GET DOWN ON IT - KOOL AND THE GANG 04 03 IT MUST BE LOVE - MADNESS 05 01 ONE OF US - ABBA 06 06 DON`T YOU WANT ME - HUMAN LEAGUE 07 13 MIRROR MIRROR - DOLLAR 08 05 ANT RAP - ADAM AND THE ANTS 09 19 WAITING FOR A GIRL LIKE YOU - FOREIGNER 10 02 DADDY`S HOME - CLIFF RICHARD 11 NE THE MODEL - KRAFTWERK 12 29 DON`T WALK AWAY - FOUR TOPS 13 16 I`LL FIND MY WAY HOME - JON AND VANGELIS 14 07 MY OWN WAY - DURAN DURAN 15 18 I COULD BE HAPPY - ALTERED IMAGES 16 09 ROCK N`ROLL - STATUS QUO 17 11 WHY DO FOOLS FALL IN LOVE - DIANA ROSS 18 10 SPIRITS IN THE MATERIAL WORLD - POLICE 19 04 WEDDING BELLS - GODLEY AND CREME 20 NE FOOTSTEPS - SHOWADDYWADDY 21 NE EASIER SAID THAN DONE - SHAKATAK 22 RE GOOD MORNING UNIVERSE - TOYAH 23 15 BEGIN THE BEGUINE - JULIO IGLESIAS 24 17 BEDSITTER - SOFT CELL 25 20 UNDER PRESSURE - QUEEN/DAVID BOWIE 26 21 DEAD RINGER FOR LOVE - MEAT LOAF 27 22 CAMBODIA - KIM WILDE 28 NE YELLOW PEARL - PHIL LYNOTT 29 23 STARS OVER 45 - CHAS N`DAVE 30 24 HOKEY COKEY - THE SNOWMEN Well even though, they were far out with Rod at number one, Luxembourg did get 23 in the 30. Lot`s of future hits in there too. Four Tops, Meat Loaf, Kraftwerk, Shakatak, and Phil Lynott all made it in the 20, through Jan 1982. Phil doing the TOTP`s theme...which was first used on TOTP in the July of 1981. Memories for me in those days included Tommy Vance taking over the Top 40, on Radio One. Unfortunately Tommy`s gaffs on the show, made him the least popular presenter at that point. He did last 2 years though! Well that`s was the contract...we can only hope that when Fearne and Reggie`s disaster ends in October! Wasn`t that the worst end year countdown ever? Also in early 1982, Peter Davison (Britain`s least popular Doctor) took over in Dr Who...and that point running over two week day evenings, at the start of the week.
December 29, 200816 yr Thanks Dave I wasn't really expecting Perfect Symmetry to be a hit, glad the album is climbing though. Ouch for Sugababes, but at least not as bad as some people thought....
December 29, 200816 yr Author Tom, you wanted the Fresh Hits Chart yesterday...Which of course, was based on Sales/Pre-Orders up to Saturday/Sunday 27th/28th Dec. December 29, 200816 yr Cheers Dave. :) Shaping up to be a very static week on the singles! Despite the hype looks like Lady GaGa is going to have an uphill battle this week cracking the top10 let alone going top 5. I don't think it'll be the first No1 of 2009 with Alexandra still selling really strongly...
December 29, 200816 yr Tom, you wanted the Fresh Hits Chart yesterday...Which of course, was based on Sales/Pre-Orders up to Saturday/Sunday 27th/28th Dec. This was it.. Thanks Dave! I'm working on the Bullboard chart of the year currently, so I probably won't be publishing the Fresh chart this week, unless there's a demand. Feel free to drop into the weekly Bullboard thread and leave any comments or questions.

Feel free to drop into the weekly Bullboard thread and leave any comments or questions. Jolly Good Tom, I will be looking in! I expect you know about the giant mistake on the Year End Chart, with Lupe Fiasco....Radio One etc, have him at 22, he should be about 66! :puke2: Sales errors! :o
December 29, 200816 yr One of the best charts from 1981, with the perfectly well fit Kim Wilde  you should see her now, she's not so fit :( Anyho... onto ths week's chart, pretty samey, seems Dizzee Rascal is returning :( TOTP New Years Eve will probably have some effect as well on the chart. I still think Alexandra will have another 2 weeks at the top, including this week, unless her sales plummet this week. Lady Gaga is still a sure bet for me to become the first #1 of 2009.
December 29, 200816 yr The first new number one I guess you mean Mart!n? Does anyone know what song Keane are perfoming on the NYE TOTP by the way?
December 29, 200816 yr The first new number one I guess you mean Mart!n? Does anyone know what song Keane are perfoming on the NYE TOTP by the way? "Spiralling." By the way Dave - can you give some examples of Tommy's gaffes? I can only remember the Joan Jett incident, which wasn't really a gaffe per se...
December 29, 200816 yr I hope Breakeven goes Top 20  I don't want it to climb and not get a new peak :(

December 29, 200816 yr Author "Spiralling." By the way Dave - can you give some examples of Tommy's gaffes? I can only remember the Joan Jett incident, which wasn't really a gaffe per se... Gaffe in 1982, Tommy states that Candi Staton`s last hit was "Young Hearts Run Free"...it wasn`t. It was "Nights On Broadway". Also on his early shows, he states "The Land Of Make BELIEF"...should be Make BELIEVE Also, on a couple of shows in 1983...a track ran backwards! Tommy also admitted he was not good, with jingles...always missing the cue, mostly on those jingles that went "Num..Ber whatever. Did you notice how he suddenly stopped using them much? He also got in too trouble for taking some chords from Men At Work`s "Down Under". He ran them repetively for a rundown piece of music, without permission.
December 29, 200816 yr Girls Aloud - Sound Of Girls Aloud will re-enter the charts inside the top 20 at least, I bet my house on it :P

He also played the B-side version of Japan's Life In Tokyo on a show in October 1982, and caused it to fall down the charts, despite a TOTP performance the same week (my other half runs the major Japan fanpage on the internet).
December 29, 200816 yr Thanks dave! Luxembourg's "forecast" was spectacularly wrong in that 1981 chart - Rod Stewart had taken a big leap to #11 on the BMRB chart the week before Christmas and the chart was then frozen so Luxy must have thought the single was going to continue upwards, which it never did. Where did the single fall to on the following week's Luxy chart? I bet it was to outside the top 10! And a song passing its millionth sale was down at #6 here. Number one on the NME chart was One Of Us by Abba, the chart that people erroneously are referring to when describing the song was a "missing" number one due to the frozen chart. It sold nowhere near what the Human League did in that missing chart week. In fact the NME chart this week in 1981 was based only on three or so days sales prior to Christmas and I doubt there were many chart returns either due to the Christmas post. What was the MRIB / Record Business number one for this week in 1981? (ie the chart dated 02/01/82). Edited December 29, 200816 yr by Robbie
December 29, 200816 yr It is not just some ABBA Fans who say that 'One Of Us' was a 'missing No.1'. Benny & Bjorn say the same thing. I'm an ABBA Fan, but I know that 'One Of Us' was not No.1 in the BMRB Chart - 'Official Chart' - in early 1982. People are confusing it with it being No.1 in 'NME' - but so was 'Chiquitita' in 1979, & no one claims that as a 'missing' ABBA No.1. So ABBA had 9 No.1 Singles in the BMRB Charts, & 11 in 'NME'. (To clarify - Benny & Bjorn say that BMRB compiled a Chart in late December 1981, & it had 'One Of Us' at No.1. But, that Chart was not published - due to it being Christmas/New Year. So 'One Of Us' is 'only' shown as a No.3 Hit - having only been No.1 in the 'missing' Week. The story has always been nonsense. Unfortunately, it tends to be repeated as 'Fact' by many ABBA Fans). What was the MRIB / Record Business number one for this week in 1981? (ie the chart dated 02/01/82). Robbie, Record Business had the Human League at the top for the 2nd Jan 82. That covered the 21st-24th Dec 1981. This was the point of sales, when it actually overtook Soft Cell as proper top seller of 1981. Abba did sneak up to number 2. On Luxy, Rod fell 6-11-28.

Unfortunately, it tends to be repeated as 'Fact' by many ABBA Fans). the missing week sales can be guessed by looking at the revised end of year charts which show that Don't You Want Me easily outsold One Of Us. Apparently the Benny and Bjorn mistake comes from them being told they were number one in the UK but the source was quoting the NME chart (in the absence of a new official chart) by it would appear that B&B are not aware that it wasn't the official chart. Chartwatch, the chart fanzine, compiled a chart for that week. My educated guess is that Alan Jones was the source of the sales information for that week (as he compiled the 3rd and final 1981 year end chart using BMRB figures and was a contributor to the fanzine) and they have Abba falling 2 places to number 5. Their top 10: 01 01 Human League 02 05 Bucks Fizz 03 02 Cliff Richard 04 04 Adam & The Ants 05 03 Abba 06 06 Madness 07 09 Dollar 08 07 Godley and Creme 09 10 Jon & Vangelis 10 08 Status Quo
December 29, 200816 yr Author He also played the B-side version of Japan's Life In Tokyo on a show in October 1982, and caused it to fall down the charts, despite a TOTP performance the same week (my other half runs the major Japan fanpage on the internet). He did indeed Tom. I found it quite astounding that people still argue that Tommy, was probably one of the best presenters of the top 40. Totally untrue, as complaints to the BBC at that time were enormous. It even made the newspapers. We knew by Autumn 1983, that Tommy had virtually had it! Andy Peebles was nominated to take over in 1984...but he declined, for his Soul show. Simon Bates was given a payrise to return to the show, 4 years after he had been taken off. Simon absolutely hated doing the chart, and sometimes it showed! He found it infuriating, being tied down to "chart hits". Simon was at his best, as a stand in. As he had many stand ins, for Tom Browne, Tony Blackburn, Tommy Vance, and Bruno Brookes.
