We reckon that the TING TINGS will be back in the top 30 combined albums by Sunday because they are already banging up at 31. JASON MRAZ had the only major new entry, and he came in at a lowily 65 which was some 12 positions lower than the re-rising ABBA GOLD! HED KANDI-A STATE OF WINTER 09 was the highest VA Compilation entry, followed by CREAM: FUTURE TRANCE.

18 17 GREATEST HITS - ABBA

19 16 40 GOLDEN GREATS - CLIFF RICHARD

20 NE SEASONS - BING CROSBY

Various Artists topping the 1978 chart. I own a copy of DISCO FEVER and of course it was a K-Tel Album...featuring disco from 76/77. BREAD had their "sound" just behind, and "Lost Without Your Love" was the current single. FEELINGS was another K-Tel album. The SEX PISTOLS gave the title that could never be said on air! GLADYS KNIGHT did alright, as she did single wise in 77/78. ROD STEWART was FOOTLOOSE AND FANCY FREE (as ever he was)!! FLEETWOOD MAC took top album of 1977. NEWS OF THE WORLD was the QUEEN album, that gave us "We Are The Champions" ELO also did a song called "NEWS OF THE WORLD" in 1982...but the OUT OF THE BLUE album contained current single "TURN TO STONE". TAMMY WYNETTE had 20 Country Classis...although in Britain she did not have 20 hits of her own! STATUS QUO rocked, along with the ROLLING STONES, SANTANA. NEIL DIAMOND gave us the single "DESIREE", and an album to boot. PAUL SIMON had "SLIP SLIDIN`AWAY" as the single. ELVIS was in concert circa 1968, or was it 1971? CLIFF slipped, and BING CROSBY was in the chart, after passing away on a golf course a few months earlier. A big year of death in the music world, during 1977 with Elvis, Marc Bolan, and Bing.

The 1978 singles chart:

01 01 MULL OF KINTYRE/GIRLSCHOOL - WINGS

02 02 THE FLORAL DANCE - BRIGHOUSE AND RASTRICK BRASS BAND

03 03 HOW DEEP IS YOUR LOVE - BEE GEES

04 04 I WILL - RUBY WINTERS

05 05 WHITE CHRISTMAS - BING CROSBY

06 08 LOVE`S UNKIND - DONNA SUMMER

07 09 IT`S A HEARTACHE - BONNIE TYLER

08 06 DADDY COOL-THE GIRL CAN`T HELP IT - DARTS

27 25 I LOVE YOU - DONNA SUMMER

28 27 JAMMING/PUNKY REGGAE PARTY - BOB MARLEY/WAILERS

29 38 UPTOWN TOP RANKING - ALTHIA AND DONNA

30 29 DON`T DILLY DALLY ON THE WAY - MUPPETS/MISS PIGGY/KERMIT

31 30 GETTIN`READY FOR LOVE - DIANA ROSS

32 31 LIVE IN TROUBLE - BARRON KNIGHTS

33 32 RUN BACK - CARL DOUGLAS

34 33 LITTLE GIRL - BANNED

35 36 NAME OF THE GAME - ABBA

36 NE NATIVE NEW YORKER - ODDYSEY

37 34 HOLLYWOOD - BOZ SCAGGS

38 42 I DON`T WANT TO LOSE YOUR LOVE - EMOTIONS

39 41 DESIREE - NEIL DIAMOND

40 NE GET ON THE FUNK TRAIN - MUNICH MACHINE

Another one of those dates, where Radio One didn`t have a top 30, but EMI managed. This was just before Record Business Magazine began in April 1978. PAUL MCCARTNEY reigning supreme. THE FLORAL DANCE spending all month at 2...as we awaited the master of TERRY WOGAN! BEE GEES were stuck...both number 2 and 3 sold as well as a usual number one, but could not get there. RUBY WINTERS doing a BILLY FURY top 20 hit from 1964, was a hit at 4 (selling as well as a number 2). WHITE CHRISTMAS sold as much as Ruby. The original 1942 BING CROSBY song came from the film "Holiday Inn"...although was featured in the film "White Christmas" some years later. DONNA SUMMER and BONNIE TYLER were neck and neck, all through their climb up the chart...We remember Bonnie get a slight push from the NOEL EDMONDS Breakfast Show on Radio One, because there they changed the lyric to "It`s A Hard Egg!" DARTS covered the 50s with the medley of "Daddy Cool", and "The Girl Can`t Help it". JONATHAN RICHMAN went Egyptian with an instrumental. CRYSTAL GAYLE had hair down to her waist, and had her first of 2 hits. SHOWADDYWADDY covered CHUBBY CHECKER from 1962. HOT CHOCOLATE went kind of scarey with the haunting "PUT YOUR LOVE IN ME". The version of "MY WAY" was issued by Elvis` record company. BONEY M told us that "BELFAST" was a dodgy place to be. CHIC (pronounced Shick, not Chique as some say) had their first hit. DAVID SOUL had his penultimate top 20 song. BOOMTOWN RATS, and the ever lovely BOB GELDOF had their 2nd. We had a touch of class, when United Artists released "As Time Goes By", from the movie great "CASABLANCA", where HUMPHREY BOGART did not say "Play It Again, Sam"...He just said "Play It". ELVIS COSTELLO got his first hit. The DOOLEYS had their 2nd. WHO PAYS THE FERRYMAN was all over BBC TV, as it was "the programme to see" at the time. JULIE COVINGTON covered ALICE COOPER. QUEEN slipped with "WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS"...Well done if you remember "WE WILL ROCK YOU", was on the flip side! DONNA SUMMER had 2 record labels on the go, as "I LOVE YOU" was on the Casablanca label, and LOVE`S UNKIND was GTO. JOHN OTWAY proved to be very famous for "REALLY FREE". BOB MARLEY was to score his first top-tenner. ALTHIA AND DONNA were just one hit wonders...THE MUPPETS gave us their MUSIC HALL E.P. I particular like "Knocked `em in the Old Kent Road"...but we Dilly Dallyed a lot! DIANA ROSS was ready for love. BARRON KNIGHTS had a laugh at LEO SAYER/BROTHERHOOD OF MAN/THE FLOATERS. CARL DOUGLAS had given up the kung-fu and "Run Back". Camera action, do it again sang BOZ SCAGGS as "HOLLYWOOD" slipped down the chart...rather strange because just outside the top 40, the VILLAGE PEOPLE had their first hit with "SAN FRANCISCO"...Going "SAN FRAN-CISCO, SAN FRANCISCO" all the way through! THE BANNED covered a 1960s song. ABBA re-climbed...the EMOTIONS could not follow up "Best Of My Love", and MUNICH MACHINE scraped in by the skin of their teeth.

Stick around for the up to minute singles chart...it`s coming! Remember last week`s Year End Countdown? The slip up that OCC made with Lupe Fiasco...never arose on our top 50 of 2008! Yep they did make a big mistake. It only nudged the bottom of the top 70 of 2008!

Thanks Dave! Was hoping we would have some midweek data earlier but I guess I know why :) Shame Out Of Control is slipping on albums but I hope GA will have two top 10 hit albums on Sunday...

'FLEETWOOD MAC took top album of 1977'

Dave, 'Rumours' was not the top Album of 1977 - not in the UK, anyhow.

It was 'Arrival', by ABBA. 'Rumours' was the 4th Best Seller of 1977, & the 6th of

1978.

Nah Kylie won't make #1 since it's only a remix album, more of a rarity for fans.

Shame Kudi is looking likely to top GA on the physicals!

Sorry Colin, my mistake. I was looking at total sales over the years!

My favourite thread on a Friday evening with a nice cup of hot tea, thanks for compiling as usual

Wow at Geraldine falling, what a fall :o

And that was the first Xmas chart I ever listened to in 1978, as I remember Mull Of Kintyre at No.1, if I remember rightly Girlschool was added a week or 2 later as a double A -sided single.

Thanks Dave  I hope MGMT can be back in the top 40 by Sunday. Great debut for Gaga too :cheer:

So you just about remember listening to Tom Browne, and the top 20 on Radio 1 and 2 in December 1977, then Martin! I was shocked when Tom quit in 1978. He was the only presenter of the Radio One chart to leave of his own accord. He did front a Danish tv pop show too. In 1979 he was in the then Emmedale Farm. Did a Sunday Afternoon show on Radio 2 in 1981. Did loads of voiceovers for commercials. Then in the late 90s was quite ill for a period. Thankfully he recovered and married a lady from Hong Kong, and now resides there. I attended his wedding, just a few years back.

Thanks Dave  I hope MGMT can be back in the top 40 by Sunday. Great debut for Gaga too :cheer:

bye bye to rule the world for the 100th time  I have literally lost count how many times that has climbed back to the top 40, and whimpering down later in the week. I do think Kids will push Take That out, sorry Norma if you are reading this, its time to put Rule The World to bed.

I'm surprised Tangled Up isn't set to have any sort of impact this week, seeing as it is also £3 in HMV
Ooohh...I havent even heard this Kid Cudi track, must be good if its #2 on Pre-Order. And, a sad ouch, at the Sugababes NCD position. Good job as usual Dave
At least Sugababes is top 40. Considering the predictions of doom before, Top 40 isn't so bad, and it has a change to climb next week.

Have a look at the latest Fresh Hits Chart, Tom...because of those re-climbing hits that we dropped previously that can`t be allowed to be in our chart anymore, it`s a real different story:

Cheers Dave! Lady Gaga looking a cert for #1 next week...

Back to 1978, I got that Disco Fever album as a Christmas present (along with Rumours by Fleetwood Mac). I still have it, though a lack of a record player means I've never listened to it for years!

Here's the cover of the album:
