January 14, 200916 yr DVD's, Games... there's more to Zavvi than CD's. The reason why there's more DVD metreage in the stores is because music is in decline, not because Zavvi are daft. And gaming is where the money is at at the moment. The amount of people still looking for Wii Fit's is frightening
January 14, 200916 yr More Zavvi stores shut 09:47 | Wednesday January 14, 2009 By Robert Ashton Ernst & Young have announced the immediate closure of a further 18 Zavvi stores, including those in Cambridge, Belfast and Watford. The joint administrators will continue to trade the remaining 74 stores, but the latest round of redundancies – coming on the back of 22 earlier store closures – will lead to the redundancy of 353 employees. Ernst & Young joint administrator Tom Jack says, “Despite having received in excess of 70 expressions of interest, we have not received any offers for the store portfolio as a whole. Consequently, with reducing stock levels we have had to manage the cost base of the business and close a further 18 stores.” He adds that they will continue to trade the remaining Zavvi stores with a view to selling all or part of the business as a going concern. “We remain optimistic that current sale negotiations will prove successful and that a sale can be achieved,” says Jack. The largest amount of redundancies – 110 – are lost at the Piccadilly store with 24 going at Watford, 22 in Belfast, 19 in Hull, 18 in Glasgow and a further 18 in Crawley.
January 14, 200916 yr Why are they closing Cambridge's? There are crappier stores than that... Edited January 14, 200916 yr by funmaker11
January 14, 200916 yr :( The stores that will be closing include: Basingstoke Belfast (Castlecourt), Cambridge, Cheshire Oaks (Outlet Village), Crawley, Londonderry, Edinburgh (Gyle) Gateshead Glasgow (Argyle St) Grimsby, Hull Newry Newtonabbey Piccadilly (Tower) Romford, Stevenage Watford Woking Luckily the Cardiff store's still open as that is the only Zavvi store in Wales
January 14, 200916 yr Gateshead and that's in the Metro Centre :( My manager came from there a few months ago. I'm surprised I'm not on the list considering what happened in my store yesterday. I am now confuzzled!
January 14, 200916 yr Why are they closing Cambridge's? There are crappier stores than that... It was obviously not pulling its weight in terms of money and revenue, Ernst and Young are not a charity

I am now confuzzled! tbh I think Zavvi is a dead duck, I think before too long ALL stores will close 70 expressions of interest and not a single offer in that time is not a good sign for Zavvi's future
January 14, 200916 yr I can't believe my local ones still staying, although they are the only music shop in town apart from WHsmith who seem to still be selling music atm.. Lady GaGa isn't being sold anywhere in town, how pathetic, although I havn't looked in our massive Sainsbury's so it may be in there.. Our Zavvi has sold out of KOL album ages ago, they obviously arn't getting any stock what-so-ever! Although there was a very very large pile of Only Fools and Horses and these have now almost all gone..
January 14, 200916 yr :( The stores that will be closing include: Glasgow (Argyle St) That's sad as I used to work there on a Saturday when it was Virgin Megastore... it was a sh*t job that I put up with for less than 2 months, but I've shopped there for many years. It's also about 200 yards from the big Woolworths store in Glasgow so that's 2 large units now empty.
January 14, 200916 yr I'm surprised Norwich isn't on the list. It doesn't seem that busy nowadays and it's quite a large store in a mall that I would imagine charges massive rent. Also there are two HMV stores in the city that seem much more busy.
January 14, 200916 yr =\ @ Zavvvi Oxford Street. I went in there after work yesterday. No new release CDs so nothing I wanted. But then the prices of most things in there. £10.99+ for chart CDs. 20% off all chart CDs they said which brings down the cost to To just under £9; still cheaper in HMV a lot of the time so it's all a bit of a sham tbh. Guh. I hope they hurry up and close. Their flagship Oxford St store has never been all that. Especially since it became Zavvi. "Bargain bucket" DVD piles on the floor, rude and inept staff, a general smell of sewage in the place, piles and piles of empty space everywhere. I could go on. Generally unpleasant shopping experience.

January 14, 200916 yr If all Zavvis close then I expect their previous custom to be split amongst a variety of places depending on location. Those smaller towns where Zavvi is the only music store (these are few and far between I believe) I'd expect to see most moving to the Internet, to Play or to their local supermarket. If towns have HMV/Zavvi currently then theoretically I'd expect most people to swap to HMV. I hope the latter thing does generally happen. As much as I dislike Zavvi I still think a physical high street presence for a music store is a definite good thing. For all sales to be made in supermarkets/online would be a terrible reality.

When I know there is a particular album or DVD that I want I order it online, I occasionally used HMV or Zavvi for impulse purchases, bored in lunch hour and nothing to do so have a browse in the bargain sections of those places etc and might have bought the odd album Those that know what they are after can easily shop online, the only thing that would suffer with High St presences going is impulse purchases
January 14, 200916 yr Hang on, they're closing the one in Piccadilly Circus? That's a real shame if they are, I've bought zillions of stuff from there over the years. It's been a music store there for decades, starting off as Tower Records, then Virgin, then Zavvi. But there is a HMV right next to it, so...
January 14, 200916 yr Yep, Picadilly is closing. It's been crap since since a couple of years before it became Zavvi, but it's still a major landmark that will be going. Even more distressing IMHO is the Virgin Megastore in Times Square New York is closing  Second best chain record shop in the world (behind Tower Shibuya, Tokyo).
January 14, 200916 yr Iconic music store to close 11:33 | Wednesday January 14, 2009 Virgin Megastores’ iconic store in New York’s Times Square is to close in April, in a further blow to the embattled retail sector. The move follows Virgin Group selling Virgin Megastores US to property developer Related Companies. Virgin’s New York Union Square store will continue to trade, however. It is believed that Virgin was paying a rent far below the market average for the Times Square store, which is currently the biggest music store in the States. :o
January 14, 200916 yr Looks to me as if they’ll keep closing stores every week until they run out of stock. :( Even though they’ve settled the EUK debt it looks like they’re still in deep trouble.
January 14, 200916 yr I was in the Castlecourt one in Belfast yesterday. They've mainly got DVDs and Blu-Ray's, whilst the one around the corner from it specialises in CDs. Still, managed to pick up Led Zeppelin II for £3, Opeth's Blackwater Park for £5 and Rambo on Blu-Ray for £11.99!
January 14, 200916 yr Indie stores are great but the one area they are severely lacking on is PRICE and price to me is king, I am fortunate enough to be in a position where I do not have to be price conscious but it ia just the way I was bought up, I don't even earn half that now but at the peak of my working life I was earning £95k a year and was still walking round from store to store trying to see which was cheapest for what I was after so out of principle I would not use indie stores as they can't compete on price Well, at the end of the day, the place in Camden of which I speak is more a "specialist" place.... ie, a lot of the stuff they sell you aint even gonna see in HMV or Zavvi..... And, funny you should mention price, the more specialised stuff that HMV and Zavvi sell in the Metal section is a total rip-off..... I've seen Metal CDs being sold in HMV and Zavvi for about 17 or 18 quid.. SERIOUSLY..... My little specialist place has the very same Metal CDs for about 12 quid.... Indeed, price is king mate..... :P  So, er, it's a no-brainer for me I'm afraid.... Fukk HMV and Zavvi..... They're sh!te, they rip off fans of specialist music, and their staff are utter fukkin' drongoes who wouldn't know Girls Aloud from Gorgoroth.....
