Small bump here for 2012 - Rihanna sets another record this year- she has now surpassed Madonna as the female artist with the most weeks on the singles chart with a TOTAL OF 776!

she's now in the all time top 5 but will have to almost double her tally to take no1!

Beyond bored with Rihanna. Particularly since she's never been that good, successful or not.

Rihanna really needs to go away for a very long time..

She is beyond dull.

It is exciting for sure!

If she has 776 now then 1000+ is more than possible, she could do double.

And ^There are a good few criticisms to make about her music/personality, but dull is not one of them. -_-

If someone thinks she's dull (or her music is dull) then they're perfectly within their rights to make that statement
Rihanna - never been any good? That's a joke. She's overexposed, sure, but no one who has any tatse for pop music could dislike ALL of her songs. I personally am not a huge fan but love a few of her tunes.

You been on the Eggnog Tony?

I never said 'never any good' but 'never that good'. Small but very crucial difference. I like a couple of her songs but she really has never warranted this much success in my eyes.

Hardly anyone warrants their success and those who do ground breaking work dont alway get the sales they deserve.

I agree with Tony, everyone surely loves at least 1 Rihanna track? Rihanna has come on leaps and bounds since 'Pon De Replay' in 2005. She's worked extremely hard over these last 7 years to get this level of success. If she wasn't busy recording new tracks for a new album every 12 months and shooting videos for tracks that weren't even official singles then she would've never become this successful. :D

For me, Rihanna is achieving right now what Madonna achieved between 1984-1991. If you look at Madonna's career in 1991 it took her seven years to return with a major bang. Basically, Rihanna ain't going anywhere. If she does, when she returns it'll probably be hailed as her biggest album yet (of course having the tracks to back it up helps).

Rihanna is the new Queen of Pop (I'm not even a Rihanna stan but this is obviously the case right now).

Hardly anyone warrants their success and those who do ground breaking work dont alway get the sales they deserve.

I agree, but it still doesn't mean that I need to change my general opinion of her.

I bet if you ask the general public they would struggle to name 5 Rihanna tracks...

Her music is not good enough to warrant her success. Her tracks will never be regarded as classics.

In fairness though she is one of the better pop girls around at the moment, but with the lack of quality and originality in the charts that is not a hard task.

Haters gonna hate. I love that Rihanna keeps releasing single after single, album after album and if you don't like it, I guess don't follow the charts then?

The only bad thing about (most of) Rihanna's songs is the superficial lyrics. Other than that, she's amazing.

I agree that some of her songs haven't aged well (Only Girl, Hate That I Love You, Take a Bow) but many are potential classics (Umbrella, Disturbia, Rude Boy, We Found Love).

I would say 'Disturbia' has aged more the 'Only Girl'

She is an incredible artist, and is deserving of all the success she has had over the past seven years.

It's incredible that she's spent more weeks in the top 75 than Madonna!

I've only got Rihanna on 772 weeks, and had a longish post ready for this weekend when she overtook The Shadows to move up to 3rd overall on her own.

Back in September 2005, when a young Barbadian female singer entered the UK chart for

the first time, no one could realistically foresee the longterm effect she was to have

on the UK charts. But now, with the ! entries in this week's Top 75. Rihanna has now

passed The Shadows total of 772 weeks on the chart to move into third place all-time in

that category, trailing only Elvis Presley and Cliff Richard.

She has done this in just over 5 years (her debut entry was Pon De Replay on 3rd Sep 05),

in a total of just ! chart weeks, meaning she has averaged over 2 of the Top 75 throughout

her entire chart career.

After what would these days be considered a slow start (she took 114 actual weeks

to reach 100 "chart weeks", far more than the likes of Flo-Rida, Timbaland, Mika

and Katy Perry, while the record is held by Glee Cast who achieved the feat in a

mere 24 weeks!) she picked up the pace from late 2007, and not since the chart of

5th Sep 2009 has she been absent from the Top 75 - the following week

Run This Town entered and she has been ever-present ever since.

On five occasions, she has had no less than 6 chart entries simultaneously:

5th Feb & 12th Feb 2011 - What's My Name?, Who's That Chick, Only Girl (In The World), S & M, Love The Way You Lie & Unfaithful

4th Jun & 11th Jun 2011 - California King Bed, S & M, Who's That Chick?, Love The Way You Lie, What's My Name?, Only Girl (In The World)

18th Jun 2011 - California King Bed, S & M, Love The Way You Lie, Who's That Chick?, Only Girl (In The World), Man Down

She has amassed this massive total of weeks on chart through only 41 singles, far less

than any one around her in terms of number of weeks

772 weeks as of w/e 29th Dec

Note 1 - I have not included All Of The Lights when calculating any of these statistics,

I do not believe she was actually credited on the chart for that record. If you wish

to include it, that would boost her total by a further 20 weeks.

Note 2 - I know some of the above weren't technically "singles" but as they appeared on

the singles chart they can be considered as such in this context.

Where am I missing 4 weeks????

'Just Stand Up!' had 3 weeks on the top 75 which I would count to Rihanna's tally but that's really a matter of whether you credit the artists on that individually or as 'Artists Stand Up To Cancer'. I have no idea off the top of my head where the other week might have came from though. Probably just a calculation error I'd imagine.

Thanks for that one. I was thinking there might have been some confusion between Rihanna/Rhianna but the later had 6 weeks in 2002
