May 21, 200916 yr Jade Ewen is an actress and was a member of an internationally successful band. Alexander Rybak is a wash-out from the semi-finals of Norwegian Idol. The composer of Jade's song is Andrew Lloyd Webber, "the most successful composer of our time." The composer of Rybak's song is a wash-out from the semi-finals of Norwegian Idol. It's sort of like a Ford Fiesta winning a car race, with a Renault 4, Volkswagon Bus, and Yugo coming in second through fourth, and then everyone applauding that the UK's Formula One car finished fifth. The UK did not get a result in line with its monetary/artistic effort. That's not to say the UK did not deserve to be fifth. That logic would only apply if we were successful the past few years and then we "only" made #5. Fact is we have done terribly and it was always going to be an uphill battle. Therefore #5 is a massive achievement given the context of the UK's recent performances in Eurovision.

Totally agree - 15 years ago there probably would have been major disappointment with a song the UK percieved as being a good ESC entry coming 5th but the fact that over the past 6 years we have come 26th, 16th, 22nd, 19th, 23rd and 25th then the UKs Top 5 placing is a massive achievement and hopefully is the start of us sending a better quality of act/song for future years.
June 1, 200916 yr Oh My GOD ... the UK jury gave it's 12 points to GERMANY :manson: UK JURY VOTE 12 Points - Germany 10 Points - Iceland 8 Points - Norway 7 Points - Malta 6 Points - Turkey 5 Points - Ukraine 4 Points - France 3 Points - Bosnia & Herzegovina 2 Points - Armenia 1 Point - Azerbaijan
June 1, 200916 yr I can't even believe they gave Armenia points. Kudos to them for giving a good song points, but they can't have seriously expected the UK to give them points when combined, especially when they place them so low? I know they're just supposed to mark their songs in order of favourite, but that was such a waste of points...
June 1, 200916 yr Germany just proves they were perverts :kink: Ukraine scoring from juries not televiters is weird too...
June 1, 200916 yr Germany? 12 points? They clearly werent listening to the same song as the rest of us.
June 1, 200916 yr It is just bizzare, I wonder who was on our jury. On behalf of the UK: we're sorry for giving 12, Europe!! But, even the televoters gave it points: 12 Points - Turkey 10 Points - Greece 8 Points - Lithuania 7 Points - Norway 6 Points - Malta 5 Points - Iceland 4 Points - Azerbaijan 3 Points - Denmark 2 Points - Germany 1 Point - Portugal Really shocked the televoters gave Portugal and Lithuania points (and to some extent, Germany)! Especially Lithuania, and so many :o
June 2, 200916 yr Lithuanian diaspora undoubtedly played a huge part there... on the other hand, Love is very radio friendly and the sort of song that would go down well with The Script/Daniel Merriweather/James Morrison lovers
June 2, 200916 yr I loved it. It was catchy without being overly camp or annoying (well, not in comparison to a lot of ESC entries). I'm surprised it went down quite so well with judges though, I'd have thought it would've been more a voters song. But it came a lot higher in the judges only table...
June 2, 200916 yr Each to their own. For me, it was like Tony Bennet singing a medley of Mambo No 5 and The Boy Does Nothing in hell.
June 23, 20214 yr I've (rather randomly) got back into this in a pretty big way recently. I think it's really beautiful and it really does sound like some long-lost song from the Disney vaults. She absolutely nails the performance. This is def top 10 UK entry imo.
June 30, 20213 yr It was and still is a great song, and there was such a buzz around the UK entry that year.
