Posted February 2, 200916 yr Londoner Lily Allen has shot to the top of the UK charts with The Fear, the first single from her new album It’s Not Me, It’s You. Lady GaGa slides a place to No.2 with Just Dance whilst Kid Cudi’s Day ‘N’ Nite is also pushed down a spot to No.3. The daughter of comedian Keith Allen, Lily burst onto the scene in 2006 after a lot of buzz, becoming the first ‘MySpace success’, gradually building a fanbase on the social networking site. Her first single Smile benefitted from the odd 2006 chart rules of being allowed into the chart on downloads a week before the physical release and hence went 13-1. She has appeared twice more in the UK top ten since then with LDN reaching No.6 later on in 2006 and Oh My God, the Kaiser Chiefs cover and collaboration with Mark Ronson which peaked at No.8 in 2007. Never out of the media or public eye, it feels like she has never been away but The Fear is her first proper single since Alfie/Shame For You, a No.15 hit almost two years ago. The Fear, originally a demo titled I Don’t Know which was posted on her MySpace mid last year, is the first single from Lily’s much anticipated second album It’s Not Me, It’s You, the follow up to her huge debut Alright Still. The Fear was released to download late last week but failed to reach the top seventy five, thus making this her first single to debut at No.1. The Fear is the fourth No.1 by a female singer in succession, following Run by Leona Lewis, Hallelujah by Alexandra Burke and Lady GaGa’s Just Dance, although that features male singer Colby O’Donis. The last group of four predominantly female songs to top the chart in succession also included Lily Allen, when she followed Sandi Thom, Nelly Furtado and Shakira to No.1 in summer 2006, although the latter featured guest vocals from Wyclef Jean. Just Dance by Lady GaGa slides to No.2 on its fifth week inside the top five, already passing the 300,000 sales mark this week, impressive for any song but especially so for a January release. Kid Cudi vs. Crookers’ Day ‘N’ Nite is down a spot to No.3 after a couple of weeks at No.2 and Tinchy Stryder’s Take Me Back, which features Taio Cruz, is down one spot to No.4. James Morrison & Nelly Furtado also slide a place with Broken Strings, down to No.5. Alesha Dixon shoots up seven places into the top ten this week with Breathe Slow. The second single from her current album, The Alesha Show, the song has leapt up the charts, moving 39-23-13-6, with the physical release still a week away. It is the follow up to the huge No.5 single The Boy Does Nothing, which itself is down just a place at No.30 this week after thirteen weeks inside the top forty. The ballad shows a different side to Alesha, showing off the soft side of the voice best known for rapping over her band Mis-Teeq’s singles. In total, this is the Alesha’s ninth appearance inside the UK top ten including her seven top ten singles with Mis-Teeq, an impressive statistic for somebody who was written off in 2006 after Lipstick and Knockdown failed to have the desired impact, peaking at No.14 and No.45 respectively. Kevin Rudolf’s Let It Rock slides a spot to No.7 this week, followed by Beyoncé’s Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It), down a place at No.8. The Saturdays slide four places to No.9 with Issues. It has been confirmed that the female quintet will follow the likes of Spice Girls, Boyzone, Westlife, Gareth Gates, McFly, Girls Aloud and Sugababes to record this year’s official Comic Relief single. The single, a cover of Depeche Mode’s 1981 hit, Just Can’t Get Enough, is due out in early March and is expected to follow all of the aforementioned acts to No.1. The girls are yet to stumble, Issues becoming their third successive top ten single and Just Can’t Get Enough certain to become their fourth. Rounding off the top ten is Use Somebody by Kings Of Leon. The former No.2 single from the American rock act has now spent nine weeks inside the top ten, beating the eight that Sex On Fire managed. This week’s top ten therefore includes four British acts, five American acts and a British/Canadian collaboration. Jason Mraz continues to gain pace with the laidback worldwide hit I’m Yours, which bounds up eleven places to No.11 this week. The American singer/songwriter, who finally scored his first UK top ten album last week with We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things, has already reached the top ten with I’m Yours in Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, Holland, Germany, Israel, Italy, Norway, Portugal, New Zealand, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and the US and it would be incredibly unlucky if the UK failed to join this list in the coming weeks. Up four places at No.13, with the physical release still not due until February 16th, is Circus, the title track and second single from Britney Spears’ current studio album. It is the follow up to Womanizer, which eventually peaked at No.3 in the UK. The second highest new entry this week, going in at No.14, is Gimme A Call, the debut single by British singer/songwriter Tommy Reilly, who won the Channel 4 show, Orange UnsignedAct, last week. Human by The Killers is back up a place to No.15 after twelve weeks around and One Step At A Time by Jordin Sparks soars twelve places to No.16 to give the American Idol 2007 winner her second UK top twenty hit, eclipsing the No.24 peak of her last single, Tattoo. Sex On Fire, the huge former chart topper from Kings Of Leon refuses to disappear and climbs back up a spot to No.18 this week on its twenty first week inside the top seventy five. Ne-Yo’s Mad, the third single from his current album Year Of The Gentleman, jumps back up two places to its current peak of No.19 whilst the next new entry is for another new talented R&B singer. Barbadian born twenty three year old singer Shontelle is being hailed as the new Rihanna. Her debut UK single T-Shirt has been available on iTunes for a while but has started to pick up now due to increased radio and TV airplay. The song jumps into the top forty at No.25, having been at No.45 last week, and looks almost certain to give her a top ten hit in the very near future. American rock act The Fray make a triumphant return to the UK top forty this week with new single You Found Me, the first to be taken from their new eponymous album. The song, which makes its top forty debut at No.35 this week after a physical release, is their third top forty hit in the UK following the huge No.4 single How To Save A Life, and the No.19 hit Over My Head (Cable Car), both released in 2007. Three other songs join the back end of the top forty this week. American girl group Pussycat Dolls return with the third single from current album Doll Domination. Watcha Think About That, which features Missy Elliot, debuts at No.36 this week and replaces former single, I Hate This Part, in the top forty this week. It is the eighth top forty single for the group here. American rockers The All American Rejects are back with Gives You Hell, which makes its top forty entry at No.38 this week. The pop punk act have appeared in the UK top forty twice before; in 2002 with the No.13 hit Swing, Swing and in 2005 with the No.18 hit Dirty Little Secret. Gives You Hell has already reached the top ten in the US and is the first single to be taken from their new album When The World Comes Down. Fellow American rock act The Airborne Toxic Event debut at No.39 with Sometime Around Midnight, their first top UK top forty hit. ‘The Boss’, otherwise known as American singer Bruce Springsteen, storms in at No.1 in the album charts with new studio album Working On A Dream. It is his fourth UK No.1 album of this decade following 2002’s The Rising, 2005’s Devils And Dust and 2007’s Magic and his eighth UK chart topper in total. Scottish rockers return to the album charts at No.2 with their third album, Tonight: Franz Ferdinand, their third top three album in succession. Kings Of Leon drop a place to No.3 with their former chart topper, Only By The Night whilst Lady GaGa is a non-mover at No.4 with The Fame. James Morrison’s Songs For You, Truths For Me, sticks at No.5, The Script fall from No.3 to No.6 with their eponymous former chart topper and Beyoncé stays put at No.7 with I Am Sasha Fierce. White Lies dive to No.8 with last week’s No.1 album, To Lose My Life, Jason Mraz is down a place to No.9 with We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things and The Killers round off the top ten, back up four places to No.10 with Day & Age, their former chart topper. Next week’s chart should easily see Lily Allen score a second week in control with The Fear, considering the huge sales that the single had this week. Lady GaGa is still selling strongly and Kid Cudi vs. Crookers, Tinchy Stryder feat Taio Cruz and James Morrison & Nelly Furtado should all remain high. Alesha Dixon, Jason Mraz, Jordin Sparks and Shontelle seem to be unstoppable in their quests for success and all could be higher once again next week. Notable new physical singles due out on Monday are due from The Airborne Toxic Event, All American Rejects, Coldplay, Daniel Merriweather, Fleet Foxes, Kardinal Offishal feat Akon and The View. Bruce Springsteen is expected to stay at No.1 in the album charts with notable new releases due on Monday from Fleet Foxes, The View, Burt Bacharach, Pavarotti, Luther Vandross, James Taylor, A1, A Camp, Jem, Marillion and UB40. Interesting to read some information about her, but her hype just about everywhere is getting on my nerves. Sorry. Another great read. Thanks.
February 2, 200916 yr All-American Rejects' previous top 40 hits were in 2003 and 2006 (I wonder if their next one will be in 2012?). Other than that, another brilliant read!
