BBC reviewing Thatcher race jibe

Source: bbc.co.uk

The BBC is considering the future of Carol Thatcher as a contributor after she was reported for using racist language during a private conversation.

Backstage at The One Show, the former prime minister's daughter referred to a tennis player as a "golliwog".

A spokesman for the 55-year-old, who has contributed to the show for three years, said the comment had been "an off-the-cuff remark made in jest".

The BBC said the matter was being discussed "as a matter of urgency".

A BBC spokesman said: "The BBC considers any language of a racist nature wholly unacceptable. We have raised the issue with the individual concerned and are discussing it as a matter of urgency."

Thatcher's spokesman told The Times she made the remark in a conversation with the show's presenter Adrian Chiles in the green room and it was "meant as a joke".

"Carol never intended any racist comment," he said.

"She made a light aside about this tennis player and his similarity to the golliwog on the jam pot when she was growing up.

"There's no way, obviously, that she would condone any racist comment - we would refute that entirely. It would not be in her nature to do anything like that.

"It is disgusting that we've had a leak of private conversations in the green room - the BBC has more leaks than Thames Water.

"Carol is mortified that anyone should take offence at a silly joke. She has summarily apologised."

According to press reports, the comment was made during a conversation about the Australian Open tennis tournament, in reference to a player who had recently been knocked out of the men's singles draw.

Thatcher, crowned Queen of the Jungle in the 2005 series of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!, is a regular contributor to the BBC One prime-time magazine show.

seems abit ott to me.... she might have made a balls up but its hardly insighting racial violence is it? you could probably find more of that inside any mosque in the uk.... uttered by the preacher dudes.

Well, the very intent behind the Golliwog or "blackface" (which is where 'golliwog' has its historical origins..) was to ridicule and demean black people in the first place, I mean, come on, has no one seen the fukkin' Black and White Minstrel Show....? Someone supposedly as "educated" as Carol Thatcher should really know better, she's not a thick, uneducated bint like Jade Goody, so I find it quite hard to buy that she didn't know what she was saying.....

What the fukk's that got to do with the price of fish on a Thursday in June Rob....? The "two wrongs make a right" argument again....? bollocks.....

Anyway, what do predominately Asian chaps in a Mosque have to do with black, probably non-muslim tennis players......? It's an entirely different argument and has nothing to do with what Carol "daughter of Satan" Thatcher said.....

I am totally and utterly disgusted by this, it is beneath contempt

That Adrian Childs should play teachers snitch and report Carol Thatcher over a PRIVATE tongue in cheek comment, she never made it on air, it was a private conversation

That Adrian Childs should play teachers snitch and report Carol Thatcher over a PRIVATE tongue in cheek comment, she never made it on air, it was a private conversation

Eh, there's nothing in the report that even suggests Adrian Childs himself "snitched"......

I suppose that means we should forgive John McCain for his "Bomb, bomb Iran" 'joke' at a Republican after-dinner speech.....

Scott's right. Carol Thatcher is an educated woman and should know better than to make remarks like that. Whether Adrian Chiles (try to get his name right) reported it or not is irrelevant.

McCain said his comments at a public event where media were present, his joke was ill advised but it was a public event, Carol Thatcher made her comments in private which is totally different

I am sure everyone on this board or even this country has made a politically incorrect comment before to mates or at a dinner party or in the pub etc, to me its a lot of fuss about nothing

"Personally I blame the parents..."

However, as this was said in private, then the matter should have been kept private, with her contract discreetly not renewed, with her being treated like a naughty child & made to repeat the following:

Repeat the BBC liberal markist media mantra after me..

Only white indigenous Bwitons are waycist

Only white indigenous Bwitons are waycist

Only white indigenous Bwitons are waycist

Only white indigenous Bwitons are waycist

Only white indigenous Bwitons are waycist

Only white indigenous Bwitons are waycist

Only white indigenous Bwitons are waycist

Only white indigenous Bwitons are waycist

Any stupid little story to hammer that message home will go straight to the top of the news schedule..

.... Especially as the top news story were the strikes with regards British jobs for British people, funny that. Clearly going against BBC policy that, so lets create a news story of own own.

All this insultingly patronisingly political correct story does is make "Auntie Beeb" score a spectacular own goal to send a few thousand more under-educated individuals into the arms of the BNP & UKIP at the next election.

Still obviously it is perfectly acceptable for a well known US Afro-Caribbean comedian to go onto US television last year and compare the said Tennis player with this toy, or a well known sports website that rips the s.h.i.t out of everyone with their lookalikes but not a former publicly educated upper class toff who still uses this crassly outdated terminology that belongs to the "Jeeves & Wooster 1930s era hooray Henry's" but clearly meant no harm isn't it.

And I'd never thought I'd end up sort of defending a Thatcher on this website....

Mate, I dont give two sh!ts what goes on in US television, that's utterly irrelevant, and a matter for that particular network to sort out as they see fit.... We pay a licence fee for the Beeb, and frankly I dont particulary want to pay wages of obnoxious tits like Carol Thatcher.....

She's just somebody else who's made a media career on the back of a far more (in)famous parent as I see it..... Live by PR, die by it as far as I'm concerned.....

Oh god, If she can get done for a private conversation off air then we are all f***ed.

I'm sure most of us have described someone to our friends and used politically incorrect terms. eg Midget. "He was a proper midget likes, only came up to the bottom of my rib cage......"

Storm in a tea cup much?

Oh god, If she can get done for a private conversation off air then we are all f***ed.

So, I guess in your eyes, so long as a "celeb" says something like "I fukkin' hate them p@kis, send them all home" in private, then that's okay, yeah....? So long as it's not on air.....

Racism's racism mate..... whether in private or in the public eye..... Carol Thatcher makes a living out of HER NAME far more than any particular "talent" she has...

woah, there is a slight difference there.

a Politically Incorrect remark and Racial hatred are two highly different things. An off the cuff remark in a private conversation imo should not be punishable. Tbh the nosey sod that snitched shouldn't have been eavesdropping.

Someone saying that ^ is inexcusable and distinctly different imo. They shouldn't just lose their job in that case.

in fact BNP/UKIP members should just be locked up on a boat sent out to the north sea and have the $h!t bombed out of it. They are a blight on our country. If they get any form of power in the UK government i'm on the first plane out, like the terrorist need more excuses to blow up innocent people. :/

I am sure everyone is more extreme privately at dinner parties and so on than they are on air

I could imagine David Cameron's dinner parties many people saying "f***ing wogs send them all home" "f***ing single mums shoot them all" and so on whereas publicly infront of the cameras they are "we are fully commited to cultural diversity" and so on

I hope that is not the case but I am a realist

yep, that was the original intent, but nowdays in a private, harmless convo, surely common sense would see that this WASNT a racist slur.

What the fukk's that got to do with the price of fish on a Thursday in June Rob....? The "two wrongs make a right" argument again....? bollocks.....

no one complains about the REAL race hate going on behind closed doors of the mosque towards us.

Thatcher agent demands BBC apology in racism row

LONDON (AFP) — The BBC should apologise to the daughter of former prime minister Margaret Thatcher over the leaking of her off-air "golliwog" comment, her agent insisted Wednesday.

Carol Thatcher was axed from her roving reporter role for BBC1's The One Show for comparing a male tennis player to a "golliwog". after filming Thursday's edition.

Her agent Ali Gunn accused the British Broadcasting Corporation of being "outrageous" and said Thatcher was the victim of a personal campaign.

Gunn said she knew who had leaked the conversation but declined to name the staff member. "Obviously they know what their agenda is and there is certainly an agenda behind this," she told talkSport radio.

"This comment was made in jest afterwards in the green room over a drink and no-one objected to it at the time.

"It's absolutely outrageous that the BBC has condoned this leak.

"They haven't even disciplined the member of staff and frankly we issued a fulsome apology that was rejected by them. But they should be issuing us with an apology.

"If her name were not Thatcher we wouldn't be talking."

Carol Thatcher, 53, is a journalist and a regular on the after-dinner speaking circuit after winning a British reality television contest in 2005.

The word "golliwog," referring to a black doll-like character, was once widely used including as the emblem of a leading make of British jam, but in recent decades has been dropped after claims it was racist.

The BBC, Britain's public service broadcaster, has been rocked by a series of scandals in recent years, including a major row last October over offensive comments by top presenters Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand.

Ross was suspended for 12 weeks for the remarks, about Brand having slept with the granddaughter of Fawlty Towers actor Andrew Sachs, while Brand resigned from his BBC radio show.

Matthew Wright presenter of Channel 5 topical morning debate show The Wright Stuff this morning revealed that Carol Thatcher whom has been a regular guest on the show had told him "she said that he reminded her of the golliwogs on the jam when she was younger."

Former minister Norman Tebbit -- one of Thatcher's closest allies -- said: "It does seem very odd that Jonathan Ross can be back broadcasting having made obscene, insulting remarks on the air, and Carol Thatcher, who said something which is allegedly highly offensive but which I rather doubt was meant to be so, in private, should be banned in this way.

"It is probably a bit of a way for the BBC to get back at Carol's mother."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well now that this story has spread around the world like wildfire, turning the BBC into a laughing stock. After all the BBC can can have US comedian Chris Rock as a guest on Graham Norton's BBC2 show and compare a certain Caucasian Scottish World #4 Tennis player with a golliwog and broadcast it, yet the daughter of Margaret Thatcher gets sacked for comparing the same Scottish Tennis player with the same toy associated with Robertson jam in a private conversation.

In short this is political correctness at its most disgusting hypocritical worst.

yep, that was the original intent, but nowdays in a private, harmless convo, surely common sense would see that this WASNT a racist slur.

Bollocks.... I've said it before, but you clearly didn't get it.... She's an educated, middle class media worker, not a thick, uneducated drongo like Jade Goody, whose ignorance can almost be forgiven..... Therefore someone like Carol Thatcher with her nice, public school and university education should be well aware of the origins of "blackface" and "golliwog"....

I regard Carol Thatcher's remarks to be worse than Jade's on the grounds that as an educated person, Carol should know better..... I went to university, I know better as to how black people were represented in the media and in films such as "Birth of a Nation".... Carol Thatcher in her typically right-wing (just like mumsy and her mates like Tebbit before her...), conservative way, has brought all this up again when we'd actually managed pretty much to consign it to the dustbin of history.....

Yes, but the BBC were happy to Broadcast his comment on the show in 2008 where it received a total of count them 4 complaints out of 4.7 million viewers.

Sorry, but that smacks of left wing Kaftka-esque hypocrisy. Had say Matt Lucas been a guest, do you honestly think the BBC would have broadcasted that on the same show?

As Sacha Baron Cohen's Ali G once famously said "Is it cos I is black..."
