People would like to hear the music, given half a chance! :teresa: Yeah he read`s the thread, he does you know... And now the Flashback...This week going back to Feb 1969...this was the week when the BBC joined forces with the BRITISH MARKET RESEARCH BUREAU for the first "Official Chart". But however, what did EMI get for that week? Here is where we find out.... w/k ending 14th Feb 1969 The Albums 01 01 BEATLES - THE BEATLES (THE WHITE ALBUM) 02 02 BEST OF - SEEKERS 03 08 DIANA ROSS AND THE SUPREMES JOIN THE TEMPTATIONS - DITTO 04 03 THE SOUND OF MUSIC - OST 05 05 YELLOW SUBMARINE - BEATLES 06 04 WORLD OF - VAL DOONICAN 07 06 THE GRADUATE - OST 08 07 BEGGARS BANQUET - ROLLING STONES 09 11 HAIR - OST 10 09 HELP YOURSELF - TOM JONES 11 19 BEST OF - NAT KING COLE 12 10 WORLD OF - MANTOVANI 13 12 BEST OF VOL 3 - BEACH BOYS 14 14 FELICIANO - JOSE FELICIANO 15 15 LIVE AT THE TALK OF THE TOWN - TOM JONES 16 NE BRITISH MOTOWN CHARTBUSTERS - VARIOUS 17 18 WORLD OF - THE BACHELORS 18 20 LOVE CHILD - DIANA ROSS/SUPREMES 19 16 GREATEST HITS - HOLLIES 20 RE THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY - OST A mix bag of albums in 1969...the album chart not such a serious thing then. Although the BEATLES were the most successful in Album terms, aside the STONES, and the easy listening side of the SEEKERS, VAL DOONICAN, THE BACHELORS etc. With Motown up front too, along with those many long running Soundtrack albums. I wonder if there is anyone who has never seen the SOUND OF MUSIC??? It wasn`t until 1971 that the majority of people fully accepted the new chart. Even less so, on an album chart. The EMI listening above was probably more correct than that first "Official Top 30". As the BRITISH MARKET RESEARCH BUREAU excluded EPs...Simon and Garfunkel lost out. Although, no way did the EP get to Number 9 in the chart! 19 yes, but 9 no way jose! The only thing slightly ahead with BMRB was the AMEN CORNER record, as it hit the top before any other chart...infact denying the MOVE a BBC Chart-topper! It was ALAN FREEMAN who pushed for the re-release of "Dancing In The Street", and it paid off. Quite a few minor hits here to, with LONG JOHN BALDRY a 4th solo hit, MARVIN GAYE/TAMMI TERRELL, HARMONY GRASS (doing a US smash for MAMA CASS). Re-issues for EDWIN STARR (originally 1966), and also the ISLEY BROTHERS (again 1966). The Soul sound taking off at last! February 6, 200916 yr Author Thanks Dave! It's cool to see that old a retro chart... plenty of Motown and groovy stuff :) But actually Rose For My Rose was by Marv Johnson... It was Tom, thanks. A slight typo, there. On Marv Johnson...because down at the BBC in 1969, there I was quite shocked to see that on certain record labels, a typo on the label itself said "Mary Johnson". Wrong sex there, what! ;)

Are we watching Eminem...American drivel? No, me neither! :P Outside the 50, the main ones to keep an eye on are Miley Cyrus only a couple of places away, Akon`s "Beautiful" ain`t far away either...as Jennifer Hudson climbs back up, with MGMT and "Time To Pretend", and Elbow are on the climb again too, with "One Day Like This". Also back up are the Bellamy Brothers...Katy Perry goes into the top 60 too. Further down we find Sway, and the View squeeze into the top 75. NOTE: This is not the official chart, but it is a chart that is based on Chart Show tv placings, and brought up to date by info from today...making it the most up to date chart anywhere. The Chart Show video singles can be seen on Saturdays at 9am (sky channel 365).
February 6, 200916 yr Thanks for all this Dave. :) Any info on Fleet Foxes and Kardinal Offishal/Keri Hilson in the singles chart.
February 6, 200916 yr Cheer Dave! :) Could Eminem go top5 tomorrow or is Alesha safe? Great to see U2 leading the pre-orders. :)
February 6, 200916 yr Kardinal Offishal/Keri Hilson. :o The version that made the iTunes chart briefly was Kardinal Offishall/RIHANNA.
February 6, 200916 yr Brilliant Dave, thanks for this. Horrible N-Dubz top 40, but I won't hold it against you :)
February 6, 200916 yr So it looks like alot of us might definently get a point for Biggest faller being Tommy Reilly :o
February 6, 200916 yr :o The version that made the iTunes chart briefly was Kardinal Offishall/RIHANNA. :unsure:That's coz that's on his album already ;) and the one with Keri (The Single Version) wasn't available yet.
February 6, 200916 yr That's coz that's on his album already ;) and the one with Keri (The Single Version) wasn't available yet. Yes I know that was the Not 4 Sale version. I just find it rather odd that he re-recorded it with another singer considering how popular Rihanna is at the mo.
February 6, 200916 yr Author Thanks for all this Dave. :) Any info on Fleet Foxes and Kardinal Offishal/Keri Hilson in the singles chart. Well Fleet Foxes are still knocking about in the lower top 60, and Numba 1 is not showing in tonight`s top 75!
February 6, 200916 yr Author So it looks like alot of us might definently get a point for Biggest faller being Tommy Reilly :o Expect a fall of at least 38 places!
February 6, 200916 yr Author Cheer Dave! :) Could Eminem go top5 tomorrow or is Alesha safe? Great to see U2 leading the pre-orders. :) Alesha should be safe, in context to Eminem who is not that obliging on other download charts, apart from iTunes.
February 6, 200916 yr The retro is practically before my time just... most of those records are in my mum's record collection. At present, in the singles chart, I wonder in 40 years time if Eminem, Katy Perry will still be remembered like classic artists like Dusty Springfield, Nina Simone etc etc. Anyho thanks for posting Dave.
February 7, 200916 yr Author GA still number seven in physicals? Thats mad. It`s beginning to be getting rather slow on the physical front. Over the last few weeks, the physical chart has struggled to produce only a couple of new entries to the top ten each week. When in it`s closing popularity days it manged to achieve well up to half a dozen entries each week! Obviously a thing brought on by certain shops going into administration. What are we left with? HMV, online ordering, and the ever approaching death of CD singles...and the ever growing fact of the download chart looking just like the combined physical/download chart. Long live the physical album, then.
