Since downloads are literally dominating the singles chart, physicals are becoming more difficult to find, is the single chart ready to become, just a download chart, or even renamed to a Tracks Chart. I can't see what else they can add to it, apart from Airplay, but I hate Airplay it just messes the chart completely.

I think more online sites will start distributing music online to the public. At least there is still market for albums on CDs at the moment.

I'll do a davetaylor and suggest that maybe pre-orders should be added onto the chart. :D

Either way, digital sales are getting stronger & stronger. This is the best sales period since 2001!

Well they still haven’t totally removed cassette sales from the charts, so I can’t see the physical format dying out completely for a while yet. However I suspect downloads will continue on the whole to have a 99% share of the market with only DJ’s and fan bases buying CD’s and Vinyl.

For the moment charity and X Factor records if sold in Supermarkets can still shift hundreds of thousands of copies, so any future revival of the CD single will depend upon the supermarkets cooperation.

it can still be called the single chart as most of the songs in it a Single choices.

Yes i heard cassettes are still being sold, the question is where?

The only cassettes i see around now are TDK 90s.

Cassettes?! :o :o
I just hope they never add airplay to the chart as the UK is dominated by Radio 1. Anything that wouldn't be played on there just wouldn't be a hit...they should never be given that power.

Cassette? What this "cassette" you talk of? :heehee:

I totally agree.

I hope they avoid adding airplay or any factor that is not decided by the public (or though hypocritically I'd also love Charity singles or "Event singles" such as X-Factor related banned from the charts as well).

let's hope it never comes to tracks being banned for whatever reason, if it sells then it should be reflected in a sales based chart, although sometimes these old singles/tracks hog the the bottom end of the top 40 for a little too long don't they??

3 Cassettes to be precise :heehee: (true fact). They have pretty much removed Cassettes from the singles chart. 3 doesn't count for much :smoke:

Surely the high physical sales of XF/Charity singles is as good a reason as any to exclude physical sales altogether... :w00t: :w00t:

Aren't our charts suppose to reflect whats being bought by the public?? fairly? For what reason should they go 'banning' entries whether they be physical or otherwise??

Just because some people don't 'agree' with Charity or Xfactor releases (for reasons personal to themselves), they are popular and people will buy them, and enjoy listening to them. The sales for these records speak for themselves...

As for changing the name of the charts. It still comprises of singles whether they are downloads or not, they are still a 'single purchase' (as someone mentioned earlier in the topic) of a record, they are not an album they are a 'SINGLE' track....If it were called the "CD Singles Chart" maybe a change of name would be needed....but as it's not it will remain the same.

I don't think it should become a downloads-only chart, though as someone else mentioned, it's looking as though it will become something like 99% downloads. My major concern is that it could become an iTunes chart, as they seem to almost have a monopoly on downloads.
more people should use Amazon now it counts to the charts and can be up to 20p cheaper than itunes.

that would mean that the sales were counted twice - once as a pre-release and then once more when it is sold.

Where is evidence that Amazon sales count towards the Official chart?

airplay will never be added.
