#5 was a re-issue of a #37 hit from 1999 - this song was a reasonable sized hit in the US despite the band being from the UK.

#7 was reaching its peak in its 14th week after a crazy chart run (bearing in mind that this was ages before downloads): 11-16-21-26-22-20-23-21-21-21-17-13-8-7-12-14-21-22-28-42-48-54-58-70-71. Not only that, but it was a re-issue of a #19 hit from earlier in 2000.

#10 was a ripoff of Hernando's Hideaway by The Johnston Brothers (a #1 in 1955).

#60 was Cevin Fisher's 2nd chart hit in just over a month - It's A GOod Life had made #54 just 5 weeks previously.

the only single I bought that week then was Angelic's Can't Keep Me Silent

had forgotten about this strange chart run - it's original run being:

a large part of the reason for the bizarre Toploader run was its use from Christmas 2000 onwards in a Sainsburys ad (it was for this reason it was re-released). I think it was Jamie Oliver's first appearance in the series of fairly annoying ads he has done for them and he in fact chose the song as he liked it . The record meandered about as more and more people got to hear the song on the advert and bought it and radio also gradually picked up on the song which helped sustain sales. The song eventually sold a quarter of a million copies despite a #7 peak.

Whole Again by Atomic Kitten managed to increase its sales each week it was at number one, a rare feat for a song at #1 for a month. It's sales: 69,286, 85,295, 101,919, 113,090. It then fell to #2 with a 110,000 sale - the number one that week, It Wasn't Me by Shaggy sold 345,498 copies.

Another interesting fact was that #37 was charting only on import sales - one of only a handful of records to get into the top 40 in this way.

it was certainly a late 90s phenomenon. There was a spate of songs that charted on import alone, helped by the fact that record labels were increasingly holding back the UK release and the relative cheapness at the time of imports. Most just made the top 75 but Shaggy made it to the top 40.
