March 1, 200916 yr For this very reason: all my best results have come from unknown artists, whilst arguably my cheapest entry SEB failed to qualify proving you CAN be successful by introducing peple to new music which really is the best feeling EVER!But you obviously pick the right songs and know where to look etc... whilst people like me who send songs that we love and think will do well, and then they don't then it's hardly surprising we stick to the "Popular Artists" route, when they're the more successful one's for our countries :(
March 1, 200916 yr I'd like to take this opportunity to defend my entry. I keep seeing people refer to it as cheap, but I really don't know how a song that has been out for just over a week is cheap. The album this song is taken from has not even been RELEASED yet, so I would hardly say it's an easy auto-qualify option. I downloaded the album, heard this song and instantly fell in love with it. I didn't think long and hard about it, because I didn't need to. I loved it and wanted to enter it. Yes, Kelly Clarkson could be seen as cheap but it isn't an artist contest, it's a song contest so it should come down to the songs. This being said, Scherzland wouldn't have been entering Kelly had the artist behind our original entry not been sneakily confirmed in a different thread before we had chance to.
March 1, 200916 yr But you obviously pick the right songs and know where to look etc... whilst people like me who send songs that we love and think will do well, and then they don't then it's hardly surprising we stick to the "Popular Artists" route, when they're the more successful one's for our countries :( you just have to persevere (sp?) with it, as we saw tonight not everything I like does well in the BJSC. You managed to find Gavin Mikhail  and The Twins so I'm sure you know just to look on last.fm or myspace for similar artists to those you like it really is that simple. There's just something so gratifying about finding a song you like but which no one else knows about I really wish more people could experience it!
March 2, 200916 yr Ashton will be backing Kopecka on this but only because Taylor Swift being entered this month is a complete and utter p*** take. At least there are people out their who haven't heard Back To The Start. Everyone on this forum knows Love Story and it goes against the principle of introducing people to new music. Ashton will not pull out however. Ashton will be here to the bitter end of BJSC Ashton's Cheap vs Unknown history I - Sugababes - Push The Button - 8th Cheap II - Laura Critchley - What Do We Do - 21st Unknown III - Mutya Buena - Addiction - 16th Borderline Some may argue a cheap artist although her solo stuff has flopped. This song is one of the less known demos. IV - Dragonette - True Believer - 9th Unknown V - Sugababes - Hole In The Head LIVE with Amelle + extra verse - 4thCheap VI - Lily Allen - I Don't Know (The Fear Demo) - 2nd Not quite unknown, but Not Cheap VII - Red Blooded Women - Colour Me Dirty - 14th Unknown VIII - Gabriella Cilmi - Got No Place To Go - 7th Borderline IX - Amy MacDonald - Barrowland Ballroom - 9th See VI X - Sugababes - Never Gonna Dance Again (Video f*** up) - DNQ Cheap XI - Gabriella Cilmi - Don't Wanna Go To Bed Now - 8th Borderline XII - Red Blooded Women - You Made Your Bed - 20th Unknown f***ing rasputin <_< That was just insulting. XIII - Lorelei Carlson - Alone - 16th Unknown XIV - Lily Allen - Back To The Start - ?? Some say Cheap, i prefer Borderline XV - Alex Roots - Dont Stop Looking/Fake Unknown Say what you want about my entries but i know that i have a strong mix of songs and the only reason i used Lily this month is because i was far too busy moving to the other side of the world to tit about with an unknown artist who has nothing on youtube. She's hardly cheap tbh. She's like Lady Sov, an artist who was pretty hated until this era.
March 2, 200916 yr I haven't read this thread, but I can guess with 5 pages and only 4 signatures that it isn't going too well :P
March 2, 200916 yr I'm not against cheap entries, but...I would never send a song which is on the UK/US charts atm or a song of a recently hyped artist. For me these songs are cheap. But on the other side e.g. September could be a cheap artist for you because she's on her way now in the UK but I knew her songs a long time ago so I don't care. I always try to find a less-known/unknown artist with a song I like and voilá I always find some. Maybe sometimes it flops but this is what about this game. Search for/discover new music, new artists not just the well-known ones. I don't mind if there are some cheap entries in the current contest as long as I find some good new ones (Margaret Berger, Agnes, Yelle, Untouched I discovered via the contest). There will be cheap entries in each contest but if you against them just simply don't vote for them. And there will be cheap contests (overall) but then comes a BJSC VII, IX or XIII :) oh and my entries: Nox (24th) Linda Király (4th) Tata Young (4th) Marie Picasso (DNQ) Yelle (14th) Elisabeth Carew (DNQ) t.A.T.u. (14th) Christophe Willem (10th) Sibel (DNQ)

March 2, 200916 yr She's hardly cheap tbh. She's like Lady Sov, an artist who was pretty hated until this era. Whaat?! Surely the fact that she got an AF on here with one album means she's well liked? I thought her last era was popular on here too. Anyway, I find this topic a bit...weird. While I agree that the sorts of entries mentioned in the first post are the cheaper entries (though I'd add myself too) I don't feel any of them have sent them for the sake of it. With this being the perfect time for someone to enter an album track from Lily's newest album, one of her biggest fans sending her was quite obvious. Same thing for Kelly Clarkson, her album just leaked close to the deadline. One of her fans left to confirm was bound to send something. Liam and Lewis obviously both love their entries too. As for mine, I'm just disappointed I didn't find out about it sooner as I would have sent it release or not. It's a bit like when I sent "Dream On", I had no idea that was getting a release here - there was no official video for the version I sent yet. If Ben introduced me to it a few months earlier I would have sent it then too. "Can't Get Over" and "Dream On" really weren't intended to be lazy entries, I genuinely love them. I guess I need to be more on the pulse with my Swedish Pop as they are both quite old. (as Rich has pointed out ) I will hold my hands up and say I probably sent September partially as I felt it was a bit safer than my other option this month. With the contest getting as big as it is and so many (20!) songs being dropped out I felt the Swedish Pop entry was the safer bet than Tegan and Sara. We already have a sisters duo in the final and a duo of lesbians and I saw that they were strong entries so I didn't want to be a bit 'samey' this month. But, saying that, this entry is far more likely to get compared to others. <_< I could probably say some more but this is already a bit of a pointless essay post from me. P.S. I don't think we can pin-point this on Allecian and Alesha last month, future UK hits have been sent for months. P.P.S. This puts a spanner in the works for my propsed entry of "Afrodisiac" next month! I can't help babbling
March 2, 200916 yr I sign up coz I think that the once sending cheap entries does it because they want to win and not share music and have fun :)
March 2, 200916 yr Oh oh oh! I was going to add, I find it funny how this was started by someone with one of the four top 75 hits in the BJSC XIV final. :kink: But a few months down the line I'm sure that figure could have at least doubled.
March 2, 200916 yr Remember the days we thought Sangria was going to be a new force to be reckoned with in the contest? it's not funny :arrr:  :P Sangria will win the contest once so watch out...but now I'm going to search for my next entry :kink:

And her forum spend months going no higher than 50 in the AF tables, Nat and i have worked our asses of to get people back in their with moderate success. i agree on you point about Lily, i never saw it as cheap. I never intended to go for a good position in fact, rich will even verify this, i didn't expect to qualify. I thought the sudden surge in anti cheap would affect Lily and id DNQ again. My target is to finish above 20th. not go for a cheap win
March 2, 200916 yr I'm not going to list all of entries to prove that I do better with completely unknown acts (I very rarely enter well known acts anyway). But put it this way, I got a lot more satisfaction introducing a small handful of people to Thermostatic than I did of reminding people of Andreas Johnson, who did a hell of a lot better. I agree with Tom completely, there is no better feeling in the BJSC than knowing that you are solely responsible for inteodducing a song to somebody they love, like Pixie and Untouched for example who are complete unknowns.
March 2, 200916 yr Smack Me =                        Pixie is pretty darned awesome as well tbh and then you have Mira Craig and Maria Haaukas Stroeng  *edit* Pixie just came on shuffle after i posted this  talk about timing. March 2, 200916 yr Author I couldn't agree more. It feels like we're being told to enter songs we don't like because they're not cheap. Not at all  I never said that the unknown but disliked song was to be preferred to the cheap and liked one, it is down to you. People are REALLY misinterpreting me here, and in some cases not even READING what I'm saying! I've said several times now that I have no problem with cheapness being entered, but I DO have a problem with a lot of people deciding to go cheap! As Rich has said, look at VIII as a contest. Who in all honesty can say that it was the most exciting, most interesting and original of contests? It was dominated by songs we had heard before (which, again, I don't have a problem with per se - it was because so many decided to do it at once!), and we ended up with a contest-by-numbers. What I don't want to see is this contest moving away from its principle of introducing others to new music. Sure, enter something cheap if there's nothing else you can find! Hell, there's even something in sending old songs that people have probably forgotten - reintroduction, a la 'One Word' in XII, is part of the varied make-up of the contest. But what I am saying is that there are so many sources to find new music that it's a bit lazy to just fall back on something that will obviously be popular. Liam, I object to quite a lot of the points you're making. It's clear that you've misunderstood where I'm coming from with a lot of these points. Amy Studt and Lady Sovereign aren't cheap - indeed, Lady Sovereign is actually quite a risk when it comes to it seeing as so many members have expressly stated an antipathy towards her. And it's not just about songs that I like/don't like - Untouched is currently (by my sales system) my favourite song of the year, and Love Story is currently in my top 10. Just because I love these songs doesn't blind me to the fact that they are cheap and that it would not be good for the contest if they won! And it's not JUST 4 people. The debate over cheapness has been around since the second contest, and just because only five/six people of the 15 or so that have spoken so far are expressly in agreement with everything I've stated does not necessarily mean that only five people object to widespread cheapness - look at Tom, or Aaron's reasoning for example.
March 2, 200916 yr I'm signing. Honestly I put a lot of thought into my entries and after seeing Love Story, Breath Slow etc qualifying over mine, irrespective of how much better some think they are over my non-qualified entries for example - it is a bit of an insult and a major mood kill for those people who do send credible and hours-of-thought-put-into entries and end up not qualifying in comparison to Breath Slow, Love Story, Trick Me etc etc which seem like last-minute-i-want-to-qualify entries. I'm sorry this is just how I see it and i'm not being bitter, it's just bjsc shouldn't lose it's tradition of minimal cheap entries and why those should be kept for a spin off for example. Etc etc. People just look at it from both angles rather than just labelling this as sad or insane or something. It's pretty legitimate if you ask me.. And Tyron and Rich, being mods of this forum would really know what's best, them being the most dedicated to the contest from the very start. VERY constructive and well-said. :D Can't add more tbh :o I'd like to take this opportunity to defend my entry. This being said, Scherzland wouldn't have been entering Kelly had the artist behind our original entry not been sneakily confirmed in a different thread before we had chance to. 99.99999% of people (especially fans) usually download the album as soon as it leaks. Already Gone IS cheap on one hand - just look at the charts of BJSC countries' representatives (Jonjo - No.2; Rich - No.22 or so; Jark - No.1; etc etc). But on the other hand it can't be cheap as it is just an album track from un-released yet album :( I'm confused. :(
March 2, 200916 yr i would say it's a borderline. it would depend on which way people look at it to discover if it was cheap or not.
March 2, 200916 yr Eledan are signing up to it as well with the pleasure! :D Don't let the contests be boring! I confess i have sent 2 cheap songs by myself back to BJSCVI and VII (and probably tATu would be considered as cheap) but no way I'm going to send something like "I'm Not Alone" :o Although i love the song to bits...
