Posted April 20, 200916 yr Calvin Harris holds off the ever-advancing La Roux. Lily Allen’s Not Fair climbs another place to reach No10; Metro Station slide a place to No9 with Shake It 54-37-22-9-6-8-9-; Eminem scores the highest new entry with We Made You at No8; four weeks inside the top ten for Noisettes’ with Don’t Upset The Rhythm (Go Baby Go) which slides two places to No7 2-2-5-7-; Beyoncé goes back up a place to No6 with Halo-. Into the top five: Ciara climbs a place with Love Sex Magic featuring Justin Timberlake; A.R. Rahman and The Pussycat Dolls slip a place with Jai Ho! (You’re My Destiny) 20-5-3-3-4-; Lady GaGa’s former No1 Poker Face slides another place to No3; La Roux continue their advance towards the summit climbing another two places with In For The Kill; which means Calvin Harris secures a second consecutive week in control with I’m Not Alone. 01 01 Calvin Harris I’m Not Alone Name: Calvin Harris Age: 25 Location: Dumfries, Scotland Nationality: Scottish Style: electronic disco Active Since: 2002 Previous Chart Action: No1: 2 Top5: 1 Top10: 1 Top20: 0 Top40: 0 Top75: 1 Biggest Hit: I’m Not Alone (solo) From: Chart Run To Date: 1-1- Calvin Harris spends a second week in control of the singles chart having been bolstered by the physical formats released last week. The last record to spend a fortnight at No1 was Leona Lewis’ cover of Run last December. The last dance non-continental European DJ to top the chart was Fedde Le Grand in November 2006 with Put Your Hands Up For Detroit. Surprisingly the last two-week No1 to be preceded by a three-week No1 was The Pussycat Dolls StickWitU (2) preceded by Madonna’s Hung Up (3) in the fall of 2005. Calvin’s debut single Acceptable In The 80s reached a highly respectable No10 in March 2007; he followed it up in June 2007 with The Girls, which peaked at No3 (9-3-6-4-9-). His debut album I Created Disco reached No8 in July 2007; however the subsequent two singles faired less well Merrymaking At My Place could only reach a disappointing No43 a month later and Colours failed to make the top75 (No127, Nov 2007). He returned with a featuring role on Dizzee Rascal’s four-week No1 from last July that spent 10 weeks inside the top10 (1-1-1-1-2-3-5-6-8-9-). I’m Not Alone is a truly brilliant juxtaposition between euphoric dance and more chilled out interludes. It is based on Electronic’s 1991 album track Try All You Want, however it is not sampled. Electronic were an alternative dance band created by ex-Joy Division and New Order singer and guitarist Bernard Sumner and ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr. Electronic had 9 top forty hits between 1989 and 1999: the biggest of which was Disappointed (No6 Jul 1992). Try All You Want was from their June 1991 No2 self-titled album. 04 02 La Roux In For The Kill Names: Elly Jackson (singer/synth player) and Ben Langmaid (co-writer/producer) Location: Brixton, London Nationality: British Style: Electro-pop Active Since: 2008 Previous Chart Action: No1: 0 Top5: 1 Top10: 0 Top20: 0 Top40: 0 Top75: 0 Biggest Hit: In For The Kill Chart Run To Date: 11-11-7-4-2- After a deceptively static start only climbing into the top ten in the eleventh hour of its third week, In For The Kill continues to surge towards the summit in a classical old school fashion. Skream’s dubstep remix turning it into a massive club hit as well as increasing airplay. La Roux are set to be strong contenders for next week’s No1. 02 03 Lady GaGa Poker Face Name: Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta Age: 23 Location: New York Nationality: American Style: electronic pop singer-songwriter Active Since: 2008 Previous Chart Action: No1: 2 Top5: 0 Top10: 0 Top20: 0 Top40: 0 Top75: 0 Biggest Hit: Just Dance (3-1-1-1-2-2-2-2-6-8-) 2nd single From: The Fame Chart Run To Date: 30-26-28-24-22-15-3-3-4-1-1-1-2-3- It would seem that the physical and promotional activity came a little too late for Lady GaGa as Poker Face slides another place this week to No3. However with weekly sales still in excess of 40,000 it raises the interesting possibility that Poker Face could replace Just Dance in the coming weeks as the biggest selling single of 2009 so far. 06 05 Ciara Feat. Justin Timberlake Love Sex Magic Name: Ciara Princess Harris Age: 23 Location: Atlanta, Georgia Nationality: American Style: r&b pop Active Since: 2004 Previous Chart Action: No1: 1 Top5: 3 Top10: 1 Top20: 3 Top40: 0 Top75: 1 Biggest Hit: Goodies (Jan 2005: 1-3-6-10-) 2nd single from: Fantasy Ride (Forthcoming 3rd studio album, Out: 05/05/09) Chart Run To Date: 6-5- Ciara scores the forth top5 hit of the career as Love Sex Magic climbs a place, following Goodies (No1, Jan 2005), 1, 2 Step (No3, Apr 2005) and Oh (No4, Aug 2005). 07 06 Beyoncé Halo Name: Beyoncé Giselle Knowles Age: 27 Location: Houston, Texas Nationality: American Style: r&b pop singer-songwriter Active Since: 1990 Previous Chart Action: No1: 4 Top5: 5 Top10: 4 Top20: 2 Top40: 0 Top75: 0 Biggest Hit: Beautiful Liar [& Shakira] (April 2007: 10-5-1-1-1-2-3-3-3-5-8-8-) 3rd single from: I Am… Sasha Fierce (No7, Nov 2008) Chart Run To Date: 40-20-9-4-5-7-6- The physical release arrests the fall of Halo climbing a place this week in it’s 5th week inside the top10. Meanwhile Beyoncé’s 3rd solo studio album matches its November peak climbing three places to No7. Halo is Beyoncé’s 9th solo top5 hit equalling the 9-top5 hits she achieved as part of Destiny’s Child. NEW 08 Eminem We Made You Name: Marshall Bruce Mathers III Age: 36 Location: Detroit, Michigan Nationality: American Style: Hip-hop Active Since: 1999 Previous Chart Action: No1: 7 Top5: 7 Top10: 5 Top20: 0 Top40: 1 Top75: 1 Biggest Hit: Lose Yourself (Dec 2002: 1-3-5-5-3-3-6-6-7-6-9-6-10-) 1st single from: Relapse (Due Out 19/05/09) Chart Run To Date: 8- Following on from his collaboration with Dr Dre and 50 Cent Crack A Bottle, which was designed to raise his profile again after a four-year hiatus; Eminem unleashes his first solo single since When I’m Gone reached No4 at the end of December 2005. We Made You enters the chart almost exactly ten years after his debut single My Name Is shot straight in at No2 in April 1999. In many ways the track picks up where he left off letting rip on the celebrities and politicians that annoy him. Whether or not his four-year absence has seen his appeal diminish has yet to be seen for a No8 debut with as yet little radio and TV support is impressive. The physical release is still three weeks away (11/05/09) and as we have seen on numerous occasions already this year singles have peaked in advance and the physical adds little further impetus than to cushion its fall a little. It would be unwise to rule out further progress; We Made You should be safely in the top five next week, however his six solo No1’s all entered at No1 - only his featuring role on Akon’s Smack That (Nov 2006) climbed 12-1- to the top. Eminem’s albums record is as equally impressive as his 100% top10 success rate with solo material; all but one of his five albums to date reached No1, only his debut The Slim Shady LP peaked lower at No12 in April 1999. Both The Eminem Show (Jun 2002) and Curtain Call - The Hits (Dec 2005) spent five weeks at No1, the latter’s weekly sales peaked at 315,000. In 2009 Eminem is set to release not one but two albums: Relapse on 18th May and Relapse 2 in the fall; ensuring that he’ll be enjoying plenty of chart action this year. 11 10 Lily Allen Not Fair Name: Lily Rose Beatrice Allen Age: 23 Location: Hammersmith, London Nationality: British Style: pop singer-songwriter Active Since: 2006 Previous Chart Action: No1: 2 Top5: 0 Top10: 3 Top20: 1 Top40: 1 Top75: 1 Biggest Hit: The Fear (1-1-1-1-5-7-) 2nd Single from: It’s You, Not Me Chart Run To Date: 16-12-11-10- Activated after a performance on ITV1’s Saturday Night programme Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway last month; Not Fair has made slow but steady progress to provide Lily Allen with the 5th top10 hit of her career. With the physical release still three weeks away it remains to be seen whether or not there will be enough impetus to propel this significantly higher; out of her previous four top ten hits they have either peaked at No1 or between 6 and 10. Meanwhile her former No1 The Fear spends a third consecutive week at No19 (1-1-1-1-5-7-12-17-17-19-19-19-) the first record to do so since REM Losing My Religion in 1991. 13 12 Enrique Iglesias Feat. Ciara Takin' Back My Love Name: Enrique Miguel Iglesias Preysler Age: 33 Location: Miami, Florida (Born: Madrid, Spain) Nationality: Spanish Style: pop and Latin pop Active Since: 1995 Previous Chart Action: No1: 1 Top5: 3 Top10: 1 Top20: 6 Top40: 0 Top75: 1 Biggest Hit: Hero (January 2002: 1-1-1-1-2-3-3-8-) 2nd single from: Greatest Hits (No3, Nov 2008) Chart Run To Date: 59-51-54-30-20-16-13-12- Continuing to climb and thus reaching a new peak, Takin' Back My Love provides Enrique with his biggest hit since Do You Know? (The Ping Pong Song) reached No3 in June 2007. 16 14 The Liverpool Collective Feat. The Kop Choir Fields Of Anfield Road Chart Run To Date: 16-14- The Hillsborough disaster occurred on 15th April 1989 at a FA cup semi final match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forrest at Sheffield Wednesday FC’s Hillsborough Stadium. 96 Liverpool supporters lost their lives and 766 were injured of those over 300 were hospitalised; due to crushing caused by intense overcrowding and a barrier in front of the pitch. Many Liverpool fans had been delayed by unannounced roadwork’s on the M62, resulting in a huge bottleneck of supporters trying to get into the ground just prior to kick off. The game’s kick off was not delayed but to ease the congestion a tunnel was opened without turnstiles allowing many more supporters into one area of the stadium. The consequence was the tragic loss of life. In the aftermath The Taylor Inquiry demanded safety improvements including the removal of barriers in front of the pitch and all-seated stadiums. In May 1989 a charity record raising money for the people affected by the disaster was recorded by Liverpool artists: The Christians, Holly Johnson, Paul McCartney and Gerry Marsden and was produced by Stock Aitken Waterman. Ferry Cross The Mersey spent three weeks at No1. Fields Of Anfield Road is a Kop terrace anthem and has been recorded to mark the twentieth anniversary of the disaster. It has been available on iTunes and in various stores in the Merseyside area and is set for a nationwide physical release this week. NEW 16 The Enemy No Time For Tears Names: Tom Clarke (vocals/guitar), Liam Watts (drums) and Andy Hopkins (bass guitar) Location: Coventry, England Nationality: British Style: indie rock Active Since: 2006 Previous Chart Action: No1: 0 Top5: 1 Top10: 1 Top20: 2 Top40: 1 Top75: 1 Biggest Hit: Had Enough (No4, Jun 2007) 1st single from forthcoming 2nd studio album: Music For The People (Out: 27/04/09) Chart Run To Date: 16- The Enemy scored their break when in May 2006 a XFM Scotland DJ started playing their debut single 40 Days And 40 Nights after downloading it from their Myspace page. The single itself was limited to 1,000 vinyl copies. The same year they opened Coventry’s Goodvia festival and by the spring of 2007 the NME had picked up the buzz lauding the band. Another limited single It’s Not OK was released in early 2007, before their first fully released single Away From Here raced into the top10 in April 2007 reaching No8. In July 2007 Had Enough became the biggest hit to date for The Enemy climbing to No4 on its physical release. It got even better for the band when their debut album We’ll Live And Die In These Towns went straight to No1 and went on to spend nearly a full year on the chart. The album was mined for a further three singles: You're Not Alone (No18, Sep 2007), We'll Live And Die In These Towns (No21, Dec 2007) and This Song Is About You (No41, Mar 2008). No Time For Tears is the first single from The Enemy’s second studio album Music For The People that hits the shops a week on Monday. No16 represents a solid debut in an era when physicals can no longer propel singles to the heights they did even two years ago. 28 23 P!nk Please Don't Leave Me Name: Alecia Beth Moore Age: 29 Location: Doylestown, Pennsylvania Nationality: American Style: pop / pop punk singer-songwriter Active Since: 2000 Previous Chart Action: No1: 3 Top5: 5 Top10: 6 Top20: 2 Top40: 4 Top75: 0 Biggest Hit: So What (Oct 2008: 1-1-1-2-3-10-) 3rd single from: Funhouse (No1, Nov 2008) Chart Run To Date: 56-31-28-23- Please Don’t Leave Me continues to make frustratingly small advances with the law of diminishing returns kicking in. With the physical release a week tomorrow it is in serious danger of becoming P!nk’s lowest charting third single from an album since Last To Know from Try This (No3, Nov 2003) peaked at No11 in May 2004. Her most successful third single was Just Like A Pill from Missundaztood (No2, 2002), which reached No1 in September 2002. 49 24 Miley Cyrus The Climb Name: Destiny Hope Cyrus Age: 16 Location: Nashville, Tennessee Nationality: American Style: teen pop Active Since: 2003 Previous Chart Action: No1: 0 Top5: 0 Top10: 0 Top20: 2 Top40: 2 Top75: 1 Biggest Hit: See You Again (No11, Sep 2008) 1st single from: Hannah Montana Soundtrack Chart Run To Date: 49-58-49-24- Climb’s impressive twenty five-place leap suggests this week suggests that it could be on course to become Miley Cyrus’ first top ten hit here; with the physical ideally poised to be released a week tomorrow, it should at the very least become her third top twenty smash. Miley is of course the star of the Disney channels Hannah Montana series that has now spawned a feature length film (Hannah Montana: The Movie). The Climb is the first single from soundtrack to the film; another track from the soundtrack Hoedown Throwdown advances 62-55- this week. 35 25 Britney Spears If U Seek Amy Name: Britney Jean Spears Age: 27 Location: Kentwood, Louisiana Nationality: American Style: pop Active Since: 1999 Previous Chart Action: No1: 5 Top5: 11 Top10: 3 Top20: 4 Top40: 1 Top75: 0 Biggest Hit: Baby One More Time (Feb 1999: 1-1-2-3-3-4-6-7-) 3rd single from: Circus Chart Run To Date: 45-35-25- If U Seek Amy continues to progress upwards and looks set to continue Britney Spears run of 24 consecutive top fifteen hits. A run that stretches back to February 1999 when Baby One More Time stormed to the top of the charts with a then record first week sale for a female artist of 463,722 copies. NEW 26 FrankMusik Better Off As Two Name: Vincent Frank Age: 23 Location: Corydon, London Nationality: British Style: electro-pop Active Since: 2007 Previous Chart Action: No1: 0 Top5: 0 Top10: 0 Top20: 0 Top40: 1 Top75: 0 Biggest Hit: Better Off As Two 4th EP from: forthcoming debut album: Complete Me Chart Run To Date: 26- Vincent Frank embarked on his music and DJing career after dropping out of London’s College of Fashion. A former beatboxer known as Mr Mouth he had begun remixing tracks for other artists such as Alphabeat and MIKA. He was long listed for BBC news’ Sound Of 2009 music poll. Better Off As Two is FrankMusik’s fourth EP release following Frankisum (2007), In Step/Done Done (2008) and 3 Little Words (2008). It provides him with his first top40 success. His debut album Complete Me is due out this summer and he is due to support the Pet Shop Boys on their forthcoming UK tour. NEW 30 Green Day Know Your Enemy Name: Billie Joe Armstrong (vocals/guitar), Mike Dirnt (bass guitar/vocals), and Tré Cool (drums). Location: East Bay, California Nationality: American Style: punk alternative rock Active Since: 1987 Previous Chart Action: No1: 0 Top5: 3 Top10: 2 Top20: 7 Top40: 8 Top75: 0 Biggest Hit: The Saints Are Coming (No2, Nov 2006, And U2) 1st single from: forthcoming 8th studio album: 21st Century Breakdown Chart Run To Date: 30- Green Day exploded into the UK charts at No7 in January 1995 with a reissue of Basket Case; having been initially a No55 hit in August 1994, and was followed by the minor No20 hit Welcome To Paradise in October 1994. The origins of the band can be traced back to 1987 when school friends Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt decided to form a band, initially under the guise of Sweet Children. By 1990 they had adopted the name Green Day, allegedly a reference to cannabis, as well as drummer Tré Cool joining the line-up. They began to play out at the legendary punk club and foundation 924 Gilman Street in West Berkley California, releasing two independent albums 39/Smooth (1990) and Kerplunk (1992), which made waves on the punk scene. With considerable underground success major labels came calling and Green Day duly signed to Reprise in 1994. However there was a backlash from their native punk scene that accused them of selling out. Their first album Dookie peaked at No13 in early February 1995 in the wake of Basket Case’s success. Further singles from the album Longview and When I Come Around gave Green Day another two top thirty hits, reaching No30 and No27 respectively. Next came their 4th studio album Insomniac that despite debuting at No8 faded quickly (8-16-25-46-73-); the three singles achieved moderate success Geek Stink Breath (No16, Oct 1995), Stuck With Me (No24, Jan 1996) and Brain Stew/Jaded (No28, Jul 1996). By the late 90’s Green Day were becoming a niche fan base act; as 1997’s 5th studio album Nimrod reached No11 but only spent 2 weeks in the top forty. The three singles taken from Nimrod were: Green Day Hitchin' A Ride (No25 Oct 1997), Time Of Your Life (Good Riddance) (No11 Jan 1998) and Redundant (No27 May 1998). Into the 21st century and the three singles from Green Day’s 2000 6th studio album Warning all had one-word titles: Minority (No18 Sep 2000), Warning (No27 Dec 2000) and Waiting (No34 Nov 2001); it was their biggest to date entering at No4. A pair of greatest hits packages followed: the first in November 2001 aptly named international superhits, it reached No15 but crashed out of the top75 the following week; the second in July 2002 reached No32 and was a collection of B-sides and rarities. In 2003 the band had begun work on their 7th studio album Cigarettes and Valentines. However the master tapes from the recordings were lost, rather than re-record the album the band opted to start again with a ‘rock opera’ style sound. American Idiot was born and thus began the bands most successful era. The albums theme and protagonist Jesus Of Suburbia - an American idiot captured the mood of the time in the wake of the war in Iraq and the world’s perception of the US under George W Bush leadership. The title track American Idiot entered at No3 in September 2004 and the album duly entered at No1. The second single Boulevard Of Broken Dreams reached No5 in December 2004 spending 6 weeks within the top10 (5-7-8-7-6-9-), their longest stay in the top 10. The album rocketed 13-1- in the January lull of 2005 to claim a second week at the top and remained in the top75 for the whole year! The final three singles were: Holiday (No11 Mar 2005), Wake Me Up When September Ends (No8 Jun 2005) and Jesus Of Suburbia (No17 Nov 2005). A live album Bullet In A Bible reached No6 also in November 2005. Green Day’s highest charting single came in November 2006 on a charity record with U2; The Saints Are Coming, raising money for those affected by Hurricane Katrina; reaching No2 (6-2-9-). In August 2007 they reached No19 with the theme from The Simpsons movie. Know Your Enemy is the lead single from Green Day’s forthcoming 8th studio album 21st Century Breakdown due out next month. It reaches No30 despite only having been available since Thursday; the video is not released until next Friday. Know Your Enemy looks set to give the band their 6th UK top10 hit in 7 days time. 39 33 James Morrison Please Don't Stop The Rain Name: James Morrison Age: 24 Location: Rugby, Warwickshire Nationality: British Style: r&b soft rock singer-songwriter Active Since: 2006 Previous Chart Action: No1: 0 Top5: 2 Top10: 2 Top20: 0 Top40: 2 Top75: 1 Biggest Hit: Broken Strings (Dec 2008: 6-4-5-2-3-4-5-7-6-7-) 3rd single from: Songs For You Truths For Me (No3, Oct 2008) Chart Run To Date: 68-46-39-33- A healthy climb of six places this week for James Morrison; however with his previous No2 hit Broken Strings at No21 in its 22nd week on the chart, Please Don’t Stop The Rain is in danger of being overshadowed and not realising its full chart potential. 42 36 Girls Aloud Untouchable Names: Cheryl Cole, Nadine Coyle, Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh. Location: UK (Formed On ITV1 Popstars: The Rivals) Nationality: British Style: pop Active Since: 2002 Previous Chart Action: No1: 4 Top5: 11 Top10: 5 Top20: 0 Top40: 1 Top75: 1 Biggest Hit: Sound Of The Underground (Dec 2002: 1-1-1-1-3-5-9-) 3rd single from: Out Of Control (No1, Nov 2008) Chart Run To Date: 54-41-42-36- Could one of the most impressive runs of top ten hits in recent times be coming to an end? Girls Aloud’s first twenty singles have all reached the top ten; the only other addition to their chart record was the appearance of an album track at No55 The Theme To St Trinians from the soundtrack of the same name. In their favour is the fact that the album cut maybe prohibitive to some at a running time of 6:45. A radio edit at a smaller 3:49 and the physical format is out a week on Monday and is likely to receive strong support from their loyal fan base. Albums Lady GaGa’s The Fame is now the longest running album No1 of 2009 spending a third consecutive week in control. In the past twelve months only two albums have had longer consecutive runs at the top: Coldplay Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends (5) and Take That The Circus (5). The Fame’s chart run now reads: 3-4-4-5-13-7-5-4-8-7-3-1-1-1-. The Kings Of Leon’s Only By The Night reaches another milestone this week namely thirty consecutive weeks inside the top7. Once again climbing a place to No2: 1-1-2-3-3-4-6-4-6-7-5-4-3-3-2-1-2-2-3-2-2-1-2-3-4-3-2-2-3-2-. Just missing out on last weeks No1 album by a mere 4 copies Mancunian indie rockers Doves slip a place to No3 2-3-. Chris De Burgh scores his highest charting album since Power Of Ten reached No3 in May 1992 and his first top ten album success since The Love Songs reached No8 in October 1997. His only No1 album came in October 1988 when Flying Colours entered at the top; thankfully it slumped 1-6- the following week. Lily Allen completes the top5 as It’s Not It’s You climbs one place to No5 after three consecutive weeks at No6, having moved: 1-2-3-5-10-16-6-6-6-5- to date. Akon’s Freedom reaches a new peak in its 20th week of chart action, climbing two places to No6 31-38-36-36-31-21-23-24-24-30-36-40-42-23-18-24-8-7-8-6-; Beyoncé’s I Am… Sasha Fierce climbs three places to it’s previous peak of No7 fuelled by her top ten single Halo 10-21-23-24-9-8-9-10-8-7-7-9-12-12-11-11-15-19-16-10-10-7-; The Annie Lennox Collection slides four places to No8 2-2-5-3-4-8- in its sixth week inside the top ten; James Morrison’s No3 album Songs For You Truths For Me climbs two places to No9 this week 3-5-9-19-31-39-45-56-64-54-48-29-30-24-7-4-5-5-7-5-13-16-19-20-18-13-9-11-9-; The Prodigy’s former No1 album Invaders Must Die climbs five places to No10 as the third single Warrior’s Dance gains momentum 1-2-7-12-7-8-15-10-. Next Week Can Calvin Harris spend a third week in control of the singles chart? Tinchy Stryder Feat. N Dubz Numba 1 looks set to be his main challenger. Eminem and Green Day will be looking for significant climbs and watch out for the Timbaland produced Return The Favor by Keri Hilson. Physical singles out today/tomorrow include: Tinchy Stryder and Go:Audio. On the albums Lady GaGa will be looking for a fourth week at the top with The Fame however she is likely to face strong competition from Depeche Mode and Noisettes.
