Last week we got 9 in the 10, 15 in the 20, and 24 in the 30 in the combined albums. In the singles we got 9 in the 10, 20 in the 20, 27 in the 30, 37 in the 40, and 49 in the 50! We only missed the Maccabees. All that and Mr Crapper did not event the toilet, as many think! Back in 1978, Radio Luxembourg`s chart looked much ahead and mainly concentrated on Airplay. Here it was anyway: 01 06 RIVERS OF BABYLON - BONEY M 02 03 AUTOMATIC LOVER - DEE DEE JACKSON 03 05 LET`S ALL CHANT - MICHAEL ZAGER BAND 04 01 BAD OLD DAYS - COCO 05 02 NIGHT FEVER - BEE GEES 06 10 DO IT DO IT AGAIN - RAFAELLA CARRA 07 16 LOVE IS IN THE AIR - JOHN PAUL YOUNG 08 11 JACK AND JILL - RAYDIO 09 13 BECAUSE THE NIGHT - PATTI SMITH GROUP 10 04 TOO MUCH TOO LITTLE TOO LATE - JOHNNY MATHIS/DENIECE WILLIAMS 11 07 SINGIN` IN THE RAIN - SHEILA AND B. AND THE SUNSHINE BAND 22 23 COME TO ME - RUBY WINTERS 23 12 WITH A LITTLE LUCK - WINGS 24 26 DON`T RAIN ON MY PARADE - JAPAN 25 NE PARLEZ VOUS FRANCAIS - BACCARA 26 NE WHAT A WASTE - IAN DURY AND THE BLOCKHEADS 27 27 JUPITER - EARTH WIND AND FIRE 28 NE DON`T TAKE IT LYIN` DOWN - DOOLEYS 29 NE MAKING UP AGAIN - GOLDIE 30 NE PUMP IT UP - ELVIS COSTELLO A mixture of predictions and airplay there. It did pay off on some records, but Billy Joel`s "Just The Way You Are" follow up "She`s Always A Woman" was pretty much a UK flop...but got tons of airplay even on the BBC. Japan were ahead of their time by 3 years with a re-make of Barbra Striesand`s 1964 Funny Girl film song. Baccara stood little chance of a 3rd hit, although represented Luxembourg in the 78 Eurovision and finished 7th. Radio Luxembourg thought better of our entry in 1978, as CoCo along with a younger Cheryl Baker managed to top the Luxembourg top 30! Despite that, it became one of the UK`s biggest Eurovision flops at that point, by coming 11th with 61 points. The contest was held in Paris. The first that was commentated by Wogan, I believe. Israel won with 157 points, as Izhar Cohen won with the epic "A Ba Ni Bi"...which meant "I Love You". A couple of other flops in the Radio Luxembourg top 30 were Earth Wind And Fire`s follow up to "Fantasy" called "Jupiter", and The Dooleys unfortunately had to "Take It Lyin`Down!"
May 4, 200916 yr Thanks Dave Loving all the Eurovision action in the retro, Parlez Vous Français should have been a UK hit, it's Baccara's best, well, campest anyway... I know I ask every week, but any sign of Jade Ewen? It's out on digital now. Amazing early entry for Japan on the retro too- was 24 their peak? Only my other half runs their biggest fan site www.nightporter.co.uk and wants to know!
May 4, 200916 yr 01 08 IT`S NOT ME IT`S YOU - LILY ALLEN  And the singles predictions look very... odd. Can't put my finger on why. Might be Steve Appleton, might be the Enemy, might be U2, idk. 8D Edited May 4, 200916 yr by B-rye
May 4, 200916 yr Britney at #12 :o That's odd too. Something tells me this week will be very bad for my predictions. 8P
May 4, 200916 yr 01 08 IT`S NOT ME IT`S YOU - LILY ALLEN  To be honest I do think it might just do a u-turn, as album sales are pretty bad. Her single is doing well, and it might push her album back to the top next week.

Yeah, I was wondering whether we would see Lily going back to #1. Heck, maybe even the Prodigy could get back up there :P
May 4, 200916 yr I'm confused as to which sales are counted in this, how can tues and mon sales be accounted if they haven't happened yet/ended?
May 4, 200916 yr Author I'm confused as to which sales are counted in this, how can tues and mon sales be accounted if they haven't happened yet/ended? Last Tues to this Mon...then the added pre-order factor for new entries.

Well ahead of it`s time I think. Baccara did manage a #16 peak on the Radio Luxembourg top 20. Again, lack of Radio One play for that!

Maybe it would take too long to explain this, so sorry if so, but could this be called "the Radio Luxembourg chart" or was there another at the time?
May 4, 200916 yr It will be interesting to see where 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole and 'Dirty Funk' by Steve Appleton end up. I didn't see Appleton beig a hit at all tbh. xP And Only By The Night's reign of terror spanning 32 weeks in the top 10 seems to be finally over. We'll see how many more weeks it can rack up in the chart. I can still see it being around in the top 75 all year. Edited May 4, 200916 yr by B-rye
May 4, 200916 yr Author Thanks Dave. Maybe it would take too long to explain this, so sorry if so, but could this be called "the Radio Luxembourg chart" or was there another at the time? Radio Luxembourg Charts kept changing, Tom. In the pre 1960s...they concentrated on Sheet Music Charts. Then in 1960, they used the NME singles top 20. Between mid 1965-66 they used a special Weekend prepared NME chart, broadcasted on Saturdays. After June 1966, they tried to predict a chart by looking at the previous week`s Music press, and the BBC Chart. This also included airplay. In 1973, airplay was dropped and a "guessing game" of predictions began on a top 30 (again based around looking at the previous week`s Radio One Chart). Early in 1978, they increased the chart to a top 40 putting airplay in again. By 1979 it was back to a top 30. Airplay was dropped again in 1987, and by 1989 the chart was just a top 20 again. The predictions did improve after 1984 because I have a sneaky feeling they also had access to the midweek MRIB Chart. Although, they never actually used a proper compiled chart after 1966. Doing a guessed chart could take ages, but their`s was probably rather thrown together in a few hours on a Tuesday most of the time. Sometimes they even forgot to include some records! ;) Some cheesey records were left out on purpose, and banned records were not included at all...If you were Judge Dread, for example!

Again, lack of Radio One play for that!David Sylvian didn't look quite as sophisticated in 1978 as he did by the time Japan actually made it big! I remember he appeared on the front cover of Record Mirror sometime in 1978 with the same haircut he has on this picture sleeve for the "Don't Rain On My Parade" single. http://www.discogs.com/Japan-Dont-Rain-On-.../release/936397 Edited May 4, 200916 yr by Robbie
