Indeed.. Pleasantly surprised with this... As far as remakes go, I have to say, this certainly one of the rare good ones, it doesn't quite match up to the Nolan Bros' magnificent reboot of the Batman franchise, but J J Abrams' film serves perfectly well as a reimagining of the classic Sci Fi show... The more hard core "Trekkies" out there will almost certainly take issue with a few things in this film, but for the most part, the changes serve a function and work well most of the time... Chief gripes I have with this film are that there's not really enough time spent setting up the characters, it all seems a bit rushed.. This is actually one film which could've done with being longer just to flesh things out a bit better, the time-travel element seems a bit silly and a bit too well-worn (and the fact that several paradoxes which really make no sense the more you think about them occur also... ), and the main baddie seems a bit naff to be honest....

But, despite the flaws, this goes along at a fair old pace, is never dull, and the actors playing the roles all work out really well.. Chris Pine gives the right amount of cock-sure arrogance to the young James Kirk, Karl Urban is excellent as Bones McCoy, Zoe Saldana simply smoulders as a young, sexy Uhura... But best of the lot has to be the inspired casting of Heroes star Zachary Quinto as Spock.. A simply masterful piece of casting, I honestly cannot think of anyone who could've done a better job to be honest, he just hits everything note perfect and nails Spock's character 100%, this guy is gonna be a really BIG star very soon... Backed up by a good supporting cast including Ben Cross, Winona Ryder and Bruce Greenwood, this is probably the best Star Trek film we could've hoped for in 2009, and it stands up generally well with the other Star Trek films, easily the best Trek film after Wrath of Khan and First Contact, imo....

With a bit more time to flesh things out and a better baddie, I think this could have been the absolute best Trek film ever, but as it is, for me, it's a little bit behind the two I just mentioned, but Abrams has built very solid foundations with which to go on with, and I have no doubts at all that he could improve on this new beginning... I mean, look at the improvement from Batman Begins to Dark Knight.... Now, if you can get John Nolan to write the next Star Trek screenplay, together with Abrams' energetic direction, I think that would be something quite literally out of this world.....

Ive never been into Star trek really (but have hardly tried) but i'm a big Abrams fan, im looking forward to see this (next week hopefully), from what ive read this is really enjoyable and the trailer is really good too, there is also a great cast, so its all adding up to something that i will like, and Abrams ideas are always great, so yeah, im looking forward to it.

I have read some reviews on this and it seems to be a good remake but doesnt necessarily reboot the series... Looks like Hollywood is gonna have to find another way to continue the corporate machine. But i dont think that will stop them

I am not a massive trekkie fan but i shall be watching this! Thanks for the nice review ^_^ worthy of being put on the main page of Buzzjack along with the news

I dont agree with that... There's one very important element in the plot (which I wont spoil for anyone by mentioning) which would suggest that Abrams and Co are very much creating a reboot rather than a simple remake..... This one element kind of necessitates the new franchise goes off in a different direction to the original franchise....

Oh ok, thanks for clearing that up but what you quoted werent my words but from a review i read, sorry for not putting that on the original post but thats what mobile typing does to you in the early hours :P

I'm a massive trekkie fan, I shall be seing this during the week, so far I've read good reviews about it.
I have seen this twice now in 24 hours! As a massive Trekkie (and a purist) I absolutley loved it! Very clever way to reboot the series, and fantastic acting all round. Best film of the year so far ^_^

I'm surprised tbh... One of my mates is a Trekkie purist as well, and he was grumbling about several elements of the plot...

Well, the whole trek universe had become very stale and up its own arse, frankly. This side stepped the whole future and became a reboot nicely to set up future films that don't have to follow all the other films, TNG, DS9 and Voyager lore if they don't want to.

I think I may see it again next weekend ^_^

EDIT - You also quite rightly mention the other 2 Trek films that this ranks up there with = The Wrath of Khan and First Contact.

I am not a trekkie, but i can't wait to see it, hopefully this weekend.

I want to see angels and demons too, so i'll probs see both over the next two weeks :w00t:

I saw this the end of last week. AMAZING film  Never been a Trekkie, but I don't mind sci-fi, however this was as much of an action film as anything else, and a good one.

I want to see Angels And Demons too (though, TBH, I haven't seen Wolverine yet...)

I wanna see this too. Never been into Star Trek, as it was a bit before my time and I really don't understand it at all. The cast list is impressive and bar 1/2 things JJ Abrams' stuff has been extremely good.

The reviews i've read are that it lacks a real bad guy, and 2 hours is too short to develop all the characters (which is pretty much what i've read on ehre too) but its meant to have a lot of good action in it so i'm sure i'll enjoy. Quinto I want to see his performance. Ever since he was in 24 i've liked the guy, and although the writers have pretty much destroyed his character on Heroes, I found his acting a bit hit and miss - he could go from sublime, to OK (could probably put that down to the writing though). However again, i've only heard good news about his performance in this.

Should be good.

As a fan of the Star Trek franchise I found this the perfect reboot, JJ Abrams completely gave the Star Trek Franchise a perfect boot up the ass, it was fun to watch, from the start right down to the finish, the scene when the Enterprise was first shown was jaw dropping, perfect effects and the villain of the story was very well exceuted, I probably watch it again.

My only gripe Scotty was under used, I had to wait half way through the film for him to make an appearance. Anthony Quinto was great as Spock, he looked so like Leonard Nimoy he had the same mannerisms, and great to see Leonard Nimoy.

I'm still in two minds at the casting of Chris Pine as Kirk, there is something missing, I think Matt Damon would have been perfect for the role of Kirk, but the setting for sequels is there with this young cast, it could go a very long way, its nice seeing Star Trek back on the map where it should be.

This has to be the film of the year for me so far...

*Zachary Quinto :kink:

Never seen a single Star Trek episode in my entire life, but I absolutely loved this.

Spock and Kirk were so obviously in love. Gayness woohohoooz.

Oh this movie ws FABULOUS.

Never been at all into Star Trek but I really really enjoyed this - Thought Quinto was fantastic as Spock and certainly redeemed his acting career after Sylar :heehee:

What the hell did he do before Sylar?
