May 22, 200916 yr Dave Always good to read your comments! So many people seem to have a closed mind when it comes to Hit40UK - the merest mention of it seems to bring out nothing but the standard "made up" / "fake" / "rigged" responses! :)

So many people seem to have a closed mind when it comes to Hit40UK - the merest mention of it seems to bring out nothing but the standard "made up" / "fake" / "rigged" responses! :) Thanks! The problem is they seem to forget the original "Network Top 30", actually paved the way for the BBC/CIN to change their own ways for 1987 for instance, and the announcing of a new chart on a Sunday...That said, is where Independant Radio should be going i.e. taking their chart back to it`s routes and being ahead of the BBC. So, they need to drop the silly airplay they use. It`s no reflection of anything, that people buy. At the moment, the airplay factor is ridiculous as why on earth are they still playing the like`s of "Spotlight" etc?! It`s what we term a now "dead" song.
May 22, 200916 yr I am going to pretend i didn't read those insults of the beautiful Fearne. She is a fantastic presenter, esp. on The Xtra Factor, i don't like it now Holly WilloBOOBY presents it she's too nice. Edited May 22, 200916 yr by Steve69
May 22, 200916 yr Who cares, I never listened to it anyway. As long as we have The Official Singles Chart based on sales, it's all good! ;)
May 22, 200916 yr This is no great loss. I don't really see why a second chart is needed anyway.Because the other stations would love to broadcast the main chart but can't because Radio 1 have the broadcast rights.
May 22, 200916 yr Author I've never listened to the Hit40UK chart, as its all chollocks with Airplay, they should have poached the official chart from Radio 1 and made it their own, as Radio 1 don't care about it nowadays, always gets $h!te presenters ever since Mark Goodier left. Wes, Joke & Jerk and now the 2 muppets.
May 22, 200916 yr It will be interesting to see how this pans out. Of course, although the article says that the official chart won't be affected by this, it will be indirectly affected. If the new show encourages listeners to download the songs in the top 10 from iTunes to change the chart at the last minute this will have a knock-on affect on the official chart the following week. Maybe sales will get a further boost?
May 22, 200916 yr i dont think people will go and buy it because it's on that chart show, and people who want a certain song to be #1 in the Top 10 they will have already downloaded a copy so why would they download it again?

Well it seems to me that the whole point of the show is to let listeners engage with the chart and affect it there and then. Therefore one should hope that the producers creative an effective enough show for this to get across. The general public may be influenced to buy a song that they like if they can get 'carried away' with the show. I'm sure that's what they are hoping for anway.

I don't know what the chances of them poaching the official chart would be but as I said earlier using the download chart would be pretty dam close.
May 22, 200916 yr It is a false chart, but the constant long term chart runs of "old songs" like "Spotlight" by Jennifer Hudson and "Up" by the Saturdays do taint it, and thats because some damn radio stations won't stop playing them!
May 22, 200916 yr Exactly what I have been saying for years! I don't know what the chances of them poaching the official chart would be but as I said earlier using the download chart would be pretty dam close. It`s not a thing that could possibly happen. The BBC put lots into compiling the chart in the first place. Remember if it hadn`t been for the BBC in 1969, joining forces with the British Market Research Bureau...then the Official Chart would not have celebrated it`s 40th Birthday in February this year, or ever happened in the first place...despite it not even being mentioned anywhere. There is a big amount payed by the BBC to Millward Brown to compile the chart today, believe me. The Official Charts Company is just the governing body, like the days of CIN (The Chart Information Network). No different...Independant Radio getting the chart from the BBC is totally impossible. The Bodies at Independant Radio should put more money in, to compile a chart for themselves, but their cutbacks won`t help them pay it. In this Country, Independant Radio is not doing too well at the moment. All those big Radio Groups (Capital/Emap etc), even don`t pay presenters much today, and many more programmes are voicetracked...with Presenters just recording announcements in 20 minutes...then a computer sticks music between links. This even happens on daytime radio. Hence the same songs go round and round...with boring playlists. Presenters not able to show their personalities, or choose songs to play...it`s all very plastic. Unfortunately Radio 2`s Weekend line-up is rather like that i.e. Brian Matthew, Dale Winton, Elaine Paige...all rather shoved together, and of course the presenters do not even hear the songs at all! That make`s Radio, so plastic & false...a big shame. Remember Record Business & MRIB compiling charts for Independant Radio?...Well they could afford to pay the companies then, and it was pretty cheap and the compiler even got a mention. No one ever mentions, that the Radio One top 40 is compiled by Millward Brown on air do they? Rather an insult, really. I mean even Fearne/Reggie should state that "This is the top 40, compiled by Millward Brown, for the BBC/Official Charts Company", but we don`t hear that today.

I really imagine that the presenter is listening to the song. Alan Titchmarsh, Malcolm Laycock, and David Jacobs particularly do this well. (This has got to be the first mention of Malcolm Laycock on buzzjack!)
May 24, 200916 yr The hit40uk chart has for a few years now (2002?-) been compiled by the OCC anyway, so they have to find a way of changing it from the official otherwise they would be selling the same chart rights twice over if the charts ended being the same or very similar.

The Hit40uk (previously The Pepsi Chart), was compiled by Millward Brown/OCC/Music Control 1993-2009. Round about 2003, in team with Woolworths, they just used the Official top 3, and 4 - 40 was Airplay/Sales 50/50%. They, then went back to the Official top 10, with 11-40 50/50% Airplay/Sales. In January (this year 2009), they started to use the top 10 downloads/11-40 Downloads/Airplay. Nothing to do with selling the rights twice...just trying to poach Radio One listeners. This is no longer happening, because Radio One have (laughingly) 0.2million, more listeners! Both stations need to get their act together...Back in 1980, Radio One`s Top 40 had 14million listeners! Absolutely gross, when now they only have 1.8!
May 25, 200916 yr I wonder why the chart show figures have dropped ;) Seriously if it went back to the no frills basic presenting of Marc Goodier, it would get more listeners. Fearne Cotton and Reggie Yates need to be down the local job centre as both are a disgrace to presenting. Edited May 25, 200916 yr by Joinwithus
May 25, 200916 yr If they went back it would lose even more listeners as casual listeners would get bored. I think people lost interest in the charts more than a few years back, which is why TOTP was axed.

I think people lost interest in the charts more than a few years back, which is why TOTP was axed. I think it`s a age thing Steve. Obviously Radio One aim at the under 20s. The older listener would be happy to have just the Countdown, as "that was", "this is". But saying that, a chart show that is mostly non-stop can be very entertaining with the sound of a dynamic presenter. Shove in some sound effects for up/downs/new entries, get some decent jingles to denote the positions. Put some useless info in, on the artists...try being comical, and basically take the p*** a bit. People would love it! i.e. Did anyone here Robin Banks, do the Smash Hits Chart during 2005...a complete p*** take! I mean look at yesterday`s show on Radio One...Fearne did not even know, that Jade came 5th in Eurovision! How ridiculous is that?! She work`s for the BBC, used to be involved with the UK`s search for the contest...Absolutely terrible, for a presenter not to know where we came!

To defend Fearne she had been on Holiday and only got back on the Friday i believe (that's not me being a storker but she said on the request show). So she missed Eurovision and probably all the news surrounding it. She hasn't presented the UK's search for two years and only did 2/3 years prior. So the fact that she hasn't been involved recently means that she doesn't have to take interest in it, although she usually does as she always used to talk about her Eurovision parties in recent years when she has been on the radio.
