Here is a review of how the artists who were predicted to be big at the start of the year have fared so far (thanks to Wikipedia for a lot of this info!):

1 – Little Boots: Despite topping the Sound of 2009 poll, has had a somewhat disappointing year, with single New In Town only reaching #13 in June, and the album Hands plummeting after reaching #5.

2 – White Lies: Having already had a #52 single (Death) in 2008, White Lies scored their first top 40 hit in January with To Lose My Life (peaked at #34). The album of the same name reached #1 (but dropped down the chart relatively quickly). Follow-up single Farewell To The Fairground reached #33 in April (both songs curiously climbing 1 place in their 2nd week in the chart).

3 – Florence & The Machine: Having reached #51 with Kiss With A Fist in August 2008 and #89 in December 2008 with Dog Days Are Over, Florence & The Machine received the Critics’ Choice award at the 2009 Brit Awards but have yet to achieve a proper breakthrough, with download-only single You’ve Got The Love peaking at #159 in January. All that may change with the release on Monday 22nd June of the single Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up), and the album Lungs due out next month.

4 – Empire Of The Sun: Debut single Walking On A Dream reached the top 10 in their native Australia, as well as in Ireland and Belgium. It only peaked at #64 in the UK (due to I-Tunes giving it away for free initially). The album of the same name peaked at #19 in the UK (and #6 in Australia), and follow-up single We Are The People reached UK #14.

5 – La Roux: Having reached #133 in 2008 with introductory single Quicksand, La Roux broke through in March 2009 with In For The Kill, which entered at #11 but eventually reached #2 (spending 4 weeks there). Follow-up hit Bulletproof was released on Monday 22nd June, with the album La Roux due out on 29th June.

6 – Lady Gaga: Undoubtedly the star of 2009, Lady Gaga currently has the two biggest-selling singles of the year, with Just Dance and Poker Face both spending 3 weeks at #1, and both reaching #1 in many other countries. She has also reached #8 with Paparazzi. All three singles are from the album The Fame, which also reached #1.

7 – VV Brown: Yet to have any chart success, but album Travelling Like The Light is due for release in the next few weeks.

8 – Kid Cudi: Had a big hit at the start of the year with Day ‘N’ Nite (which reached #2). Follow-up Make Her Say is yet to chart. He also featured on Kevin Rudolf’s Welcome To The World (which reached #77). Album Man On The Moon: The End Of Day is due for release later in the summer.

9 – Passion Pit: Yet to have any singles chart success, but the album Manners peaked at #55.

10 – Dan Black: Yet to have any solo chart success.

The ones that didn’t make it:

Big Pink: Yet to have any success.

Frankmusik: Having previously released 3 EP’s in 2007 and 2008, Frankmusik reached #26 with the single Better Off As Two in April.

Master Shortie: Yet to have any chart success, but the album A.D.H.D. is due for release later in the summer.

Mumford & Sons: Yet to have any chart success.

Temper Trap: Yet to have any chart success, but the album Conditions is due for release later in the summer.

I thought Dog Days was top 20 on iTunes, how did it only reach #89 :o
Wow! I didn't know Kid Cudi, White Lies, Empire of the Sun or Dan Black were involved in this :o
I should expect La Roux will continue to have a brilliant year - not as good a year as GaGa, who already has a #1 album, two #1 singles and a #8 still climbing single of course, but I reckon La Roux will have at least her #2 and #1 singles, and I predict the album to go to #1 too, though I'm unsure how well I'm Not Your Toy will do.
Or Noisettes maybe?

Noisettes had minor chart success (2 singles in Top 75) few years ago. Not sure if that still makes them underdogs for this year.

True

But they only really broke through this year

You're also forgetting that their first album What's The Time Mr. Wolf? was #75 for one week xP

I don't think it's fair to say that Frankmusik didn't make it. I saw him live last Friday, and he's a fantastic performer. With Radio 1 playlist support, new single Confusion Girl is surely going top 10 when it's released.

Little Boots' year just got better. She's currently fave to win Mercury Prize

Little Boots and Doves have become the bookmakers' joint favourite to scoop the 2009 Mercury Music Prize.

The Blackpool-born singer's debut Hands, which charted at number five last week, and Doves's fourth studio album Kingdom of Rust each have 5-1 odds on winning.

Bat For Lashes's Two Suns is third favourite with 6-1, while as-yet unreleased debut's from La Roux and Florence And The Machine have also been given high odds for taking the prestigious prize.

Despite betting already underway, the album nominations are not announced until late July.

Previous winners of the Mercury Music Prize include Elbow's The Seldom Seen Kid and Klaxons's Myths of the Near Future.

Theo, the favourites NEVER win the Mercury!

Oh really, I've never really followed it, I just saw an article of DS

I must admit the summaries are pretty spot on, I couldn't word it any better.

As for the Mercury Award, I hope Bat For Lashes get it. My favourite album of the year so far... will get Lungs when its officially released.

Little Boots has definitely underperformed. Lady Gaga's taken over the universe, and La Roux has exceeded all expectations I think, a 500k+ selling #2 hit and a possible #1 soon! Would also say Frankmusik's done ok too, sure BOAT sank a bit at #22 but he's got another single soon and festival appearances.

I wonder how many will follow up their breakthrough hits with another though? Last year you had acts like David Jordan and Sam Sparro who had one massive hit and then bombed out the top 40.
