How is this silly? If this rule didn't apply, then every b-side bought as part of a bundle would have its own chart position, even if virtually *no-one* bought it on merit.

If a b-side is bought on its own from a bundle, that's fair enough to chart though, because it has been specifically chosen.

I think you've misunderstood.

We're not talking about it charting because someone bought the bundle.

We're talking about sales of the B-Side on its own. ie, some who hates the A-Side, ie "Beat Again", so just buys the B-Side, ie, "Umbrella".

So if 11,000 ppl bought the A-Side (Beat Again) on its own for 79p, and 10,000 bought the B-Side (Umbrella) on its own for 79p, the OCC says the B-Side can't chart because it is part of a bundle and doesn't qualify for the charts, no matter how many ppl buy it on its own.

That is why I said silly OCC

yes but this didn't happen with Pixie Lott's Use Somebody.
yes but this didn't happen with Pixie Lott's Use Somebody.

Maybe the record company designated "Use Somebody" as a double A-Side???

nope it was a b-side just like Leona's Forgiveness to Bleeding Love.

Use Somebody I believe was just an iTunes exclusive track released in tandem with Mama Do.

Probably wrong though.

Looks like you're right. Want You is listed as the B-Side on Amazon and HMV.

I just checked itunes for Pixie Lott....and Use Somebody appears as part of the single bundle for Mama Do.....just like Umbrella does for JLS. Is it possible that JLS's record company asked for it not to chart? perhaps as they didnt want it to have a low peak to "spoil" their chart history? Although saying that...it still charted at 100 and something.......hmmmm it's all very strange...
Maybe the amount Umbrella sold to chart at #107 (1,938 sales) is how much it sold before the record company asked for it to no longer count.
Was 'Want You' in the Mama Do single on iTunes?

No, it's on CD single only.

From James Masterson:

Much of the talk surrounding 'Beat Again' during the week was not so much down to the single itself (which had opened up a 3:1 gap at the top after just one day on sale) as to the rather shock sales flashes that suggested that the single's b-side (their shot by shot remake of Rihanna's 'Umbrella') was selling enough in its own right to potentially grab a Top 10 placing of its own. As we discussed on the podcast in the week, there was actually no rational reason for this, the track available as part of the digital bundle and on the accompanying CD single, removing any need for people to buy it as a standalone with any urgency. As it turns out, the listing for 'Umbrella' was a nothing more than a database error, a consequence of sales for the digital bundle being misallocated to the wrong track and its Top 10 ranking was a one day wonder. 'Umbrella' did sell enough standalone copies to chart, but sits just outside the Top 100 in a far more sensible reflection of its actual popularity. Needless to say this was a salutary lesson to all (myself included) to never get too excited over early sales flashes that may actually bear little resemblance to the way the chart actually looks.

Ahh now I see what happened. People who bought BA and Umbrella separately instead of buying the bundle when they bought the second track, both tracks being bought counted as one sale as it would if the bundle was bought.

The sales it made to get to #107 were sales from people who bought Umbrella and not BA but if they had have purchased BA, it would have counted as one sale to BA and not 1 to Umbrella and 1 to BA.

Although the rationale sounds sound... surely though charting in the top 20 on Itunes would've given them more sales to be higher than 107?
No because people bought Beat Again then instead of completing the album they bought Umbrella. So although it counted separately on the itunes chart it would only count as 1 sale to Beat Again because they purchased the whole album.

Okay, that is a good explanation.

Charting at #107 based on people only buying Umbrella and not BAis pretty amazing though :o

Makes sense to me. I knew there would be some kind of data error.

I get a different interpretation from James Masterson's comments:

Sales of the digital bundle were added to sales of "Umbrella", instead of being added to sales of "Beat Again".

Because pre-orders for the digital bundle were quite high on iTunes, it looked as if "Umbrella" was selling way more than it actually was.

I was just explaining the reason why Umbrella was actually charted. A data error for Tuesday mids made Umbrella be high.
