April 18, 201015 yr You obviously weren't paying enough attention. The daleks needed the Doctor to explicitly state that they were the daleks and who he was otherwise the dalek paradigm wouldn't recognise them due to their hybrid nature. Once they had his testimony their priority was to activate it. Daleks have always been single minded in pursuit of their prime objective and prone to missing out on other opportnites. It's long been a distinct weakness. After they teleported the Doctor convinced them he'd blow them all up so they resisted killing him. The other big flaw with the daleks is their supreme arrogance. They just love the sound of their own voices and like to waffle on about how great they are and again overlook opportunities (just like most Bond villains). Their great plan though was to restore the pure Dalek Empire and killing The Doctor was secondary and could essentially wait. If the daleks had actually always been so intent on killing him they could have done it every single time thy've met right back to the Hartnell days. Seems perfectly in keeping with the shows tradition to me .... actually i knew that, dunno why i posted that earlier, i knew i should have logged on last night cos there were several points i wanted to make but have forgotten them. but that makes no sense, surely if the opportunity came along to kill the only being in the entire universe that could and has stopped them in the past and is their arch enemy, why not take it? 2 seconds and its done! hardly a delay towards restoring the empire is it!
April 18, 201015 yr Definitely a come down. I still like Matt and Karen but this should have been a two parter imo. Everything happened way too fast and I always like trying to work things out whilst I'm watching but there wasn't enough time. And there is something seriously wrong with the production-the music is way too loud in comparison to the dialogue and I struggle to hear it. The daleks weren't even very coherent either. Thank goodness we're having a two-parter, written by Moffat featuring River and the angels next. Hopefully they can't ruin that formula.

No it doesn't make any REAL sense but then it's only TV and if the daleks (or any number of The Doctor's enemies) actually acted with the conviction of their words the 13 incarnations would have been used up by about 1975 and some would have been incredibly brief.

The fact that a lot of younger viewers are also saying the music is too loud tells me that it really is too loud.
April 18, 201015 yr Mmm, the ratings are in for Dr Who, and already a worrying trend is appearing: Series 5 Overnight figures to date: Episode 1 8.0m Episode 2 6.7m Episode 3 6.2m So that is an average of just under 7.0m, compared to the first 4 Series episodes (so it excludes the specials) of the 21st Century revival: Overnights to date: Series 1 - 7.2m Series 2 - 8.6m Series 3 - 6.8m Series 4 - 8.1m
April 18, 201015 yr Uh oh :( I hate people who live off David Tennant and refuse to be open minded and realise what the show is about, which does account for a large number of those falls.
April 18, 201015 yr This is a complaint normally confined to older viewers. The fact that a lot of younger viewers are also saying the music is too loud tells me that it really is too loud. Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one! Being only 21, I don't see myself as an 'old' viewer
April 18, 201015 yr I liked this episode, I don't think it had quite as many weaknesses as the previous two - although the way the Daleks were "regenerated" was lame to the say the least. And what's the the new Daleks being half-Power Ranger? The crack is also becoming a little TOO obvious now. Maybe Amy is Dalek technology eh? :o And does anyone else think that the cracks in time and space are the reason for the Doctor always being late?
April 18, 201015 yr Author I would pay little attention to the overnights. Dr Who has a huge timeshift in the official ratings: The Eleventh Hour jumped to 10.09 million - 2nd highest series opener S1: 10.81 S2: 8.62 S3: 8.71 S4: 9.14 S5: 10.09 The others won't jump as high but will still increase. And last night's ep will still 2nd most watched show on TV so I don't think anyone will be complaining. As for the laughable Moffatt ruining who and "jump the shark" comments - oh dear! Give the guy a chance for crying out loud.
April 18, 201015 yr Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one! Being only 21, I don't see myself as an 'old' viewer  That was my point. I was assuming you were one of the younger viewers.
April 18, 201015 yr It was pleasantly done episode I suppose but I really couldnt keep myself interested in it. An improvement on last week's numerous plotholes and unanswered questions I suppose but still not a great episode. Next week looks like it might save what has so far been a rather mediocre series.
April 18, 201015 yr Liking Matt & Karen, but I'd probably say this was my least favourite episode of the series And about the ratings - I've been out the last two Saturday's, and caught up with it on the iPlayer. Maybe a lot of others are doing the same? I think over 1million people are meant to have watched the first episode on the iPlayer
April 19, 201015 yr i reckon matt smith was a poor choice for the dr, he is too much similar to tennant, imho they should have picked a completely different (older) actor to avoid the comparison.
April 19, 201015 yr After watching the first three episodes, I can conclude so far that Karen Gillan is going to be probably the show's biggest asset (she's shaping up even better than Billie Piper, and certainly better than Freema Agyeman, and with the bonus of NOT being Catherine Tate as well... ), and Matt Smith possibly the greatest weakness.... I'm just not warming to him at all... As I thought, it's the "Peter Davison Syndrome" all over again... IE a younger, weaker actor following on from an actor who defined the role, and there can be no doubt that Tenant defined the show for the 21st century... Everything Smith does is just an echo of what Tenant did for his three seasons... It needed someone totally different to Tenant to progress the series IMO... Which is where someone like Patterson Joseph would've come in, if only Moffatt had had the guts to actually DO something different and cast a black actor, or maybe even a WOMAN, why not....? Saturday's show was gimmicky and just totally half-baked.... Spitfires-as-X-Wing-Fighters, the Dalek ship basically standing in for the fukkin' Death Star, multi-coloured Daleks coming off the "production line" like some new hatchback or summat... Lame..... -_- Honestly, just compare this to superior Cable/Satellite Sci Fi shows like "Caprica", "Flashforward" or "Fringe", I mean, the contrast is incredibly stark, the standard of storytelling in these shows is infinitely higher IMO.... One can only hope this series may finally spring into life next week with the Stone Angels and River....
April 19, 201015 yr Matt Smith to appear in 'Sarah Jane' Monday, April 19 2010, 13:56 BST By Neil Wilkes, Editor Source: digitalspy Matt Smith is to guest star in the new series of The Sarah Jane Adventures, the BBC has announced. In a special two-part story, The Doctor will be reunited with Sarah Jane (Elisabeth Sladen) and fellow former companion Jo Grant (Katy Manning). The script has been penned by Russell T Davies, executive producer on Sarah Jane and former Doctor Who showrunner. The episodes will mark the first time that Davies has written for the Eleventh Doctor. "It's a fantastic script and I can't wait to work with another Doctor and hope Matt has fun with us," said Sladen. "I've known Katy for ages and I am delighted to be working with her. I last met her in LA but this time we will be in Cardiff. LA was good but Cardiff is better." Manning, who appeared alongside the Third Doctor from 1971 to 1973, said: "Playing Jo Grant again is something I never really considered. I was gobsmacked when they told me and I am over the moon. What an incredible little treat. I come home [to the UK] and this is one of the first things that happens." Nikki Wilson, co-executive producer on the Who spinoff, said of the two-parter: "Viewers are in for a real treat, with an action-packed story, full of Russell's usual wit and warmth, which takes the gang inside a secret base beneath Snowdon and introduces brand new vulture aliens, the mysterious Shansheeth. All this, plus a trip to an alien planet - a first for The Sarah Jane Adventures." Sarah Jane was recently recommissioned for a fourth and fifth series, to air in autumn 2010 and 2011 respectively. Meanwhile, other guest stars for the series will include Laila Rouass, Cheryl Campbell and Harry Potter's David Bradley as the voice of the Shansheeth.
April 19, 201015 yr Author Very excited about Matt and Katy appearing in SJA! Will be interesting to see RTD write for Matt. Re: ratings - Final rating for The Beast Below - 8.42m Also The Eleventh Hour has set a new record for iPlayer - 1.27 million views in one week!

April 19, 201015 yr Well Stone Angels are probably my favourite enemies aside from Daleks who are there by default (being literally pushed at me  ) so I really can't wait for the next episode. The Best Below is by far the best episode of this season so far. Isn't it the woman who died in one of the previous seasons in the library (4th one I guess, with Catherine Tate) who is going to be in the next episode by the way? Edited April 19, 201015 yr by Ljósið
April 19, 201015 yr Author Yep River Song - but this meeting with the Angels will be set before events in the library for River. But it's not going to be her first meeting with the Doctor I believe. Her whole story will be revealed though according to SM. And don't agree Mushy especially when Blink was the Doc-lite episode so this is the first time we get Doc/companion dealing with them properly.
