A man accused of killing his 11-year-old diabetic daughter by praying instead of seeking medical care has been found guilty of second-degree reckless homicide.

Dale Neumann, 47, was convicted over the March 23, 2008, death of his daughter, Madeline, from undiagnosed diabetes.

Prosecutors argued he should have rushed the girl to a hospital because she could not walk, talk, eat or drink. Instead, Madeline died on the floor of the family's rural home as people surrounded her and prayed. Someone called an ambulance when she stopped breathing.

Neumann stared at the jury as the verdict was read out yesterday in the courtroom in Wausau, Wisconsin.

Defence lawyer Jay Kronenwetter said the verdict would be appealed.

Neumann, who once studied to be a Pentecostal minister, testified that he believed God would heal his daughter and he never expected her to die. God promises in the Bible to heal, he said.

"If I go to the doctor, I am putting the doctor before God," Neumann testified. "I am not believing what he said he would do."

The father testified that he thought Madeline had the flu or a fever, and several relatives and family friends said they also did not realise how ill she was.

Leilani Neumann, 41, was convicted of the same charge in the spring. Marathon County Circuit Judge Vincent Howard set October 6 for sentencing for both parents, who face up to 25 years in prison.

Their case is believed to be the first in the Midwestern state of Wisconsin involving faith healing in which someone died and another person was charged with a homicide.

Last month, a jury in the western state of Oregon convicted a man of criminal mistreatment for relying on prayer instead of seeking medical care for his 15-month-old daughter, who died of pneumonia and a blood infection in March 2008. Both the girl's parents were acquitted of a more serious manslaughter charge.

Good, serves him right. There is nothing worse than these holy prayer worshipping deluded idiots. What sane minded parent would sit around and not seek medical help.

Fair enough, maybe he should've taken her to the hospital, but to prosecute him?

Maybe we might not really understand his thinking behind what he did, but if he was so sure God could heal her, surely we shouldn't say he deserved it.

He obviously didn't want her to die - it's his own daughter for God's sake, so being prosecuted for homicide seems vastly unjust imo.

You're wrong mate... He's putting his own faith before the welfare of his daughter, simple as, which is exactly the same thing as an employer putting profit margins before a worker's health and safety... He's almost certainly guilty of Negligent Homicide because he had a duty of care to his daughter, and he failed in that duty... What's the fundamental difference between what this guy did through neglect, and what the guardians of Victoria Climbie did through abuse...? Both were done in the "name of God".... <_< <_< The net result is the same - an innocent child dead because of a depraved, stupid mis-interpretation of (fatally flawed) religious texts....

If he believes in "God", then he should also believe that doctors and surgeons have been given their life-saving gifts from God, and are acting through God.... I'm pretty sure that even the Bible says that God 'heals' through his/her/its vessels (ie, humans, ie, DOCTORS, NURSES, SURGEONS, etc...), so this tw@t doesn't even know his own bloody religion's texts....

Pentecostals are really actually a pretty crazy bunch.... It's this lot who've been banging on about the "end of days" and were putting all sorts of strange ideas into the Bush Jr Administation's head....

No, he deserves to be locked up, IMO....

good, he deserves to be prosecuted.

shows you then just how much 'the god of love' actually listens to an earnest prayer... proof he doesnt exist!

Spot on....

But of course, the Bible Thumpers will argue "God moves in mysterious ways"..... What a crock......

.... there was a christian guy on last night.. thanking god for his kids, but also aware that god might want to take them for himself... wtf?... why? a test?... deluded idiots.

Very sad, but let's hope it will make others think about their actions "in the name of God".

We're going back to Abraham (or is it Jacob...?) here aren't we...? Parents actually willing to sacrifice their kids if "God tells them"......

Seems to me that it's not just Chavs that are unfit parents..... <_<

prayer will help but people also need to do something...not just wait but do an action too..:D
And from what he said in court, it sounds like this STILL hasn't shaken his belief. Erm...God "let" your daughter die and ignored your prayers, what do you think of that one?

god is 'testing' his faith by claiming his daughter, taking her to heaven..... why god couldnt have used her here on earth is another matter! i mean, whats the hurry?

Sorry, but prayer does BUGGER ALL to help anyone.... What a ridiculous notion.... A belief in ONESELF, and SELF confidence, as opposed to belief in some non-existent entity, is of a far greater benefit to the psyche, IMO....

But Mushy remember, GOD MOVES IN MYSTERIOUS WAYS.

They were sentenced yesterday. They each have to spend one month per year in jail for the next six years. They will be on probation for ten years.

The judge described them as "very good people, raising their family who made a bad decision, a reckless decision". I don't normally describe sentences as soft but this is ridiculous.

Un-fukkin'-real..... Six months in prison...??? Christ, they'd may as well have heard this case in a Magistrate's court.... How utterly ridiculous.... What's the difference between their depraved indifference and that of the mother of Baby P FFS....??? <_< Oh, they're "Good, Middle Class Christians", and Baby P's mother is just Chav scum (which she is, but that's not the point I'm making).... The end result is the same - Parents not giving a flying fukk about their kid's suffering..... Only difference is, one went on Facebook to ignore the suffering, the other read a fukkin' Bible..... <_< This "judgement" makes me beyond angry, is it any wonder very few people have any faith in the English "justice" system....?
