September 11, 20168 yr DanG, is a track involving a highly iconic singer for 2002 eligible...There were some debates about this...? Edited September 11, 20168 yr by TheSnake
September 11, 20168 yr Author Shakedown (feat. Terra Deva) - At Night Date 5th May 2002 1 Week Official Chart Run 6-13-20-34-40-52-57-68-x (8 weeks) hN9yVnM9W68 Shakedown are Swiss house duo Stephan Mandrax and Sebastien Kohler who had their only hit single with 'At Night', another example in this thread of TheSnake's favourite genre, funky house. Mandrax had been a house DJ since the mid-80s and founded small record labels in the 90s. Kohler worked as a sound engineer and then also started a record label around the same time. The two would then form Shakedown and released an album 'You Think You Know' in 2001, which featured this song. As well as being a top 10 hit in the UK it would make the top 10 in Belgium and peak at #3 in Austria. Shakedown's success only lasted one single though, a follow-up was released over a year later ('Drowsy With Hope') but it would only reach #46. Vocalist Terra Deva had previously been a child actress, featuring in two seasons of Mickey Mouse Club, before going into the world of music. She released her first and only album 'Pulled Apart' in 1998 which was inspired by electronic and house music. She would not receive an official credit for her vocals on the song unsurprisingly as there are only a few lyrics and she isn't well known. Wikipedia tells me she also sang vocals on three additional minor chart hits; Who Da Funk 'Sting Me Red (Clever)' (#32), Junior Jack 'Thrill Me' (#29) and Tim Deluxe 'Less Talk More Action' (#45).
September 11, 20168 yr Author DanG, is a track involving a highly iconic singer for 2002 eligible...There were some debates about this...?I believe it is.
September 11, 20168 yr Author some brilliant tracks entered the chart the same week as Shakedown and sadly miss out on a place in this thread. firstly the trance banger from 4 Strings (already mentioned earlier in this thread but worth bringing it up again) 4 Strings - Take Me Away (Into The Night) [#15] faHomJimjLc and another great trance song from Cosmic Gate which had a criminally low chart peak Cosmic Gate - Exploration Of Space [#29] qj58nbn35bg
September 11, 20168 yr At Night is very good, I mostly recognise it from the electronic synths. it wouldn't be my favourite funky house song, but it is nice anyway, I got this confused with 2005's Freak On by Stonebridge and Ultra Nate, another funky house song with similar synths when I was younger.
September 11, 20168 yr You guys are pacing through this! (or it seems that way ) Addicted To Bass: Now this one's a lot of fun. Love the breakbeat parts in this, always felt this had a darkish tone to it but that never detracted from my enjoyment of the song - this is the type of song I'd expect to still get a lot of club play but it only seems to pop up in genre-specific venues. True Love Never Dies: Genuinely think I must have about 10 compilations with this on! Not among my faves of the genre but I'd never skip it if it popped up on shuffle, great vocals as you'd expect but the instrumentals aren't quite as top notch as a lot of other songs released previously. It was good this trance-esque sound had a few more big charts after its zenith. Point Of View: This is one of the coolest songs on this countdown, seriously I get the impression if you play this to anyone they'd think "this guy's got good taste" - a soaring melody absolutely carries this track, very much like Dove I'll Be Loving You which was understandably brought up in comparison. We NEED more songs like those 2 back in the charts of tomorrow. Something: ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE    one of my all time favourites. It starts off which those dark synths but explodes into one of the best vocal lines in a dance song in existence. I genuinely could play this over & over and never tire of it which is extremely rare for me. It was a shame their other material wasn't quite as spectacular but they'll always have this is their repertoire! Shake Ur Body: Another really fun track, this was the Gold Dust of the early noughties, of course the Shy FX involvement being the main reason there. That beat right from the off is irresistible & this is another one which goes up another gear in the choruses. Always a welcome addition to any playlist :) Lazy: Now this one I was never a huge fan of until about, say, 5 years ago when I heard it from outta nowhere in a friends car & it sounded actually quite great! Needless to say I made up for lost time by spamming it for a few weeks thereafter. One of the more subtle songs to appear here but I really like the fittingly "lazylike" vocals as they complement the production perfectly. There's a song released the following year (which I'm praying makes an appearance) which is out a similar sound which I MUCH prefer. At Night: Such a great run of songs here! 2002 is making a big case for one of the best years of the decade. This is a quintessential house anthem which I rediscovered through listening through the Now album series around the time but it instantly hit me from the first few seconds. They really make it impossible for you to skip if it comes up on shuffle. My only minor criticism is it a bit repetitive even for dance standards however it's not one to turn your nose up at!
September 11, 20168 yr I've been listening to Give It by X-Press 2 quite a lot of late so strange to see it mentioned here, even if it is just as a result of their bigger song getting a spot on the list.

Really ahead of its time Give It was....like Klingande in production. It's not the only 'tropical house' song in 2005, one more makes the thread as we will see... Just watching The X factor btw and a tune coming up for the 2002 thread coming up is a soundbed, it sounds amazing, funky house classic.
September 11, 20168 yr 'something' ~ such an inspired atmospheric jam    'lazy' ~ 'at night' ~ perfff
September 11, 20168 yr btw what happened to~ Missy Elliott - 4 My People (Basement Jaxx Remix) qJcXOQGb-mo :kink:
September 12, 20168 yr Author was that the single version??? didn't realise considering i'm not that familiar with the song
September 12, 20168 yr Actually this is the version of 4 My People that was the main single version in the UK: b4jJyzKUN7c I'd still say it should qualify for this though as it was definitely a dance mix of the track.
September 12, 20168 yr Me too - however, without digging it out, I'm certain it's the version I posted that is the true Basement Jaxx mix rather than the version that youtube seems to suggest it is.
September 12, 20168 yr Author Nigel & Marvin - Follow Da Leader 2002 Date 12th May 2002 2 Weeks Official Chart Run 5-8-14-20-24-37-55-67-58-71-x (10 weeks) b1pegMeq_lE Does this sound familiar? That's because it uses the same instrumental as Chocolate Puma's single which was discussed earlier in this thread. Reggae duo Nigel & Marvin mashed up their own song 'Follow Da Leader' (linked below) with 'I Wanna Be U', with it (undeservingly) peaking one place above Chocolate Puma's version - although it didn't outsell it. Not much is known about the duo and indeed 'Follow Da Leader' would be their only hit single. TBs5NqXIkTk
September 12, 20168 yr I have the UK CD single and the basement Jaxx mix is the 1st track And it's included on her Respect ME greatest hits album.
September 12, 20168 yr btw what happened to~ Missy Elliott - 4 My People (Basement Jaxx Remix) qJcXOQGb-mo :kink:   Shoulda had 2 weeks at number 1 in this thread, I rekin. Edited September 12, 20168 yr by Sinner
September 12, 20168 yr Follow the Leader, like Hey Baby was a popular tune in children's disco's when I was younger, so good memories....:) Of course that's why I knew it better than the Chocolate Puma track, but the Chocolate Puma track is better imo as it is completely original. That is a very short write-up, DanG....
September 12, 20168 yr Author well I couldn't really add anything more than that, especially when I was the one who wrote the Chocolate Puma commentary as well and there's no information about the group that I can find.
September 12, 20168 yr Can I post a couple of Number Ones along with videos and write ups please? :D I like how this is a collaborative project between danG, Ethan and TheSnake, but I'd like to collaborate too!
