May 4, 20178 yr Love Generation is good....remember it from the time, sounded different to any other dance hits at the time, I liked it and still do although it has been a bit overplayed over the years on bingo adverts and the like  (and I needed to add something here other than lazy cover versions)I suppose it is like late 2002 and early 2003 when loads of 80s covers seemed to be made in a trancepop style. Only this time it was the Shapeshifters style production that was being used. I like those dance covers anyway, Ai No Corrida I didn't know was a cover at the time and remember quite well, it was played a lot on music channels and I liked it, its production especially, and I also remember the Clea and Da Playaz one, also didn't know it was a cover and I liked that one too. Ai No Corrida sounds better today though, a well produced uplifting cover, also the video isn't sexualised unlike Uniting Nations two other hit songs. The Pump Up The Jam remix I wouldn't call pointless, it adds more energy to the original, and I remember that one from the time, thought it was an original song about keeping fit (hence the lyrics about pumping). Thought it was a good lively tune though, and I do prefer this remix to the original even thought the original was brilliant for its time of course! The Madonna one I wasn't a fan of really, I didn't really know why Madonna was doing this kind of song. Although I really really liked Give It 2 Me a few years later from her (also kind of dancey too) I also have another song to review that (unfortunately) slipped in a week during Bob's run. Oh come on, you have to admit the instrumental at least of the next one is lush
May 4, 20178 yr Author You weren't a fan of 'Hung Up'? :o Thought that'd be your thing with its disco strings courtesy of Abba. I suppose if you knew those songs at the time they'd age better, whereas all three mentioned in that post passed me by. Nostalgia is a big factor in which songs of the 00s I prefer.
May 4, 20178 yr Bob Sinclar was ahead of his time twice, firstly with I Feel for You in 2000 he predated the Shapeshifters style mid 00s production and then with Love Generation (albeit with a faster beat) he predated the chilled acoustic dance that has become popular in Europe this decade.
May 4, 20178 yr You weren't a fan of 'Hung Up'? :o Thought that'd be your thing with its disco strings courtesy of Abba. I suppose if you knew those songs at the time they'd age better, whereas all three mentioned in that post passed me by. I suppose I didn't mind it, maybe I use the wrong words but I didn't like it as much as some of the other dance songs around. Nostalgia is a big factor in which songs of the 00s I prefer. Indeed nostalgia is a big factor, and because I remember the mid 00s tunes more (and hearing the iconic production of the violins or the looped 80s covers) and it sounded much better to the eurotrance before which I didn't like before at the time, that's probably why I like this time so much for dance music. To the point that in about 2011 I found a house music compilation on iTunes, clicked on it expecting to hear stuff that sounded like The Shapeshifters, with violins and uplifting vocals and it ended up being minimal deep house with just the odd bit of vocal. I was disappointed! Although I have grown to like 2000-3 trance/eurotrance even though I didn't like most of it at the time, although I still think electro in 2007 was a downhill step from the funky house revival of the mid 00s (which we will see more of in early 2006 particularly).
May 4, 20178 yr 'Love Generation' is alright but I much preferred 'World, Hold On' from Bob Sinclar. I prefer "World, Hold On" too I think, Rock This Party (Everybody Dance Now) I am really not a fan of, shouldn't be Bob Sinclar's biggest hit I think (the sample and the rest of the song doesn't flow very well imo and the fact there is a man shouting over it 'Now everybody dance, now everybody move' etc. is annoying), dance music in the chart in 2006 really started to go downhill by this point imo, although there are two great tunes making top 10 by the very end of the year. (and I needed to add something here other than lazy cover versions) There is actually one funky house cover that I really don't like and it charts top 10 in late 2006 (largely because I am not the biggest fan of the original). May 5, 20178 yr Been bugging me for days but when was Lemon Jelly's 'Nice Weather For Ducks' released here sure it was 2003?
May 5, 20178 yr Been bugging me for days but when was Lemon Jelly's 'Nice Weather For Ducks' released here sure it was 2003? Yes it was 2003, I really like the use of the sample in it, 'All the ducks are swimming in the water' should have been used more in it though imo. Don't remember it from the time though.
May 5, 20178 yr My fave Lemon Jelly track has to be “The Staunton Lick”, didn't chart but it was used heavily in the final episode of Spaced.
May 8, 20178 yr Author Dannii Minogue & The Soul Seekerz - Perfection Date: 23rd October 2005 Weeks at #1: 1 week Official Chart Run: 11-29-61-x (3 weeks) iTFlYRH0KUE Dannii Minogue previously had a Dance #1 with 'Who Do You Love Now', and now 'Perfection' becomes her second (of the 00s) and last. The song became her 18th top 40 hit, entering at #11 and thus breaking her run of five consecutive top ten hits, started by the aforementioned 'Who..' (#3) and finishing with 2004's 'You Won't Forget About Me' (#7), a dance hit in collaboration with Flower Power. Her next top 40 would be 2006's 'So Under Pressure' (#20) which would also be her last. Following various chart underperformances, Dannii now releases very little music and has spent most of her the last ten years of her career being a judge on various talent shows including the UK and Australian versions of The X Factor and more recently Gary Barlow's 'Let It Shine'. 'Perfection' is taken from the album 'Club Disco' which got released in late 2007, over two years after this hit the chart. It was her fifth and final studio album. The song features The Soul Seekerz, a UK production trio who 'Perfection' was the only hit for. Following the hit they mainly focused on remixes, remixing for many popular artists including Rihanna and Britney Spears. For the song, which was originally an instrumental, a sample of 'Turn the Beat Around' by disco singer Vicki Sue Robinson was used. As you would guess, this is a disco house song, again inspired by the Shapeshifters trend. The song doesn't do much for me though, there's a lot of songs that do this sound better.
May 8, 20178 yr I liked Perfection at the time, was on music channels loads iirc, although considered it more pop than dance because I only thought it was credited to Dannii at the time. Knew it was fitting into the funky violin dance trend that had become popular after Lola's Theme though. Still think is a very good track, the instrumental with the strings is excellent and Dannii's vocal is mostly very good, although I am not really a fan of the spoken word bit. Although the way she says the word Perfection in the spoken word bit reminds me of how it is said in a certain song that may be appearing on this thread in a while! This is much better than that song imo though! Edited May 8, 20178 yr by Yeasty Handbrake
May 9, 20178 yr Entering the chart the same week, 'It's Over Now' by Big Ang feat. Siobhan at #29 n04HDw75vR0 I loved this at the time, it was on the Clubland compilation that I bought and was probably one of my faves of the album. Can't believe looking back it only went to #29, it sounds so much bigger! I still give it a listen every now and then and it sounds great every time. The song this sampled was also sampled in Freemasons' 'Watchin' (#19, 2006) and Burns' 'Lies' (#32, 2012). yeah, it is one of best dance tracks of that time, pure bliss!
May 9, 20178 yr Oops...didn't look at the list...assumed that one was the next one The next one I was a bit confused about at the time but I liked it.... 2005 was a great year for dance....so much variety even if a lot of dance songs underperformed in the top 40....sad it's nearly over on this thread.... 2006 is probably the last truly great year for chart dance in the 00s imo.....although I like 2008 of course and its eurodance and funky house revivals (and some other songs from other genres too like The Journey Continues and Lollipop). That's not to say there weren't some great dance tracks in 2007 and 2009 (particularly the latter). oh I still play it a lot! I would put it inside top 100 dance music of alltime!
May 19, 20178 yr Tom Novy featuring Michael Marshall Your Body Date: 27th November 2005 Weeks at #1: 2 weeks Official Chart Run: 10-15-18-23-31-28-21-20-25-31-36-46-56-67 (14 weeks) cgeEsvLhGqs German DJ Tom Novy - real name Thomas Reichold - took his track "Your Body" to the UK Sinlges Chart Top 10 in November 2005, hogging the dance number 1 for 2 weeks in the process. The Ministry of Sound released track features vocals from American singer Michael Marshall (formerly of Timex Social Club) whose voice you may also recognise from 1995 hit "I Got 5 On It" by Luniz. The track has a re-invented disco feel to it - reflected in the music video - and in fact samples Aretha Franklin's "Jump To It". Novy was no stranger to the music scene having released countless tracks before "Your Body" including 2 top 75 hits "I Rock" (ft Virginia) and "Now Or Never" (ft Lima) - and earlier 2 top 40 hits as duo Novy vs. Eniac with "Superstar" and "Pimpin'". "Your Body" was his biggest hit and had a very respectable chart run for its time. He went on to have a further top 40 hit in 2006, once again featuring the vocals of Lima, with "Take It (Closing Time)". For me, personally, I had forgotten that this track even existed, but remember it very well. I wasn't a massive fan on it - I thought it was alright - but enjoyed it on re-listening to it today. May 19, 20178 yr Don't remember 'Your Body' having a Top 40 run of 11 weeks, I always thought it was a 4-5 week chart run. Great track though!
May 19, 20178 yr Tom Novy also had 2 top 40 hits as part of Novy vs Eniac. Your Body had in fact charted a couple of weeks earlier as a track on Various Artists - United Nations Of House - Volume 1 (it charted at #71). I'm guessing that Your Body was considered the 'lead' track on this single (i.e. the track whose downloads counted alongside the physical release as per the chart rules at the time) prior to the single release of Your Body, which the downloads then got transferred to.
May 21, 20178 yr Your Body is very good, was on music channels quite a bit at the time I remember, I was confused about the disco video as it didn't sound very discoey (unlike some funky house tracks at the time). But it did stand out from the rest in being more minimal, liked it at the time, especially the funky vocal.
