The GH album was certified 2x Platinum exactly a year ago today, as it came up on my Instagram memories.

The album has done around 40k in the last 12 months, let's hope it gets to 700k by next year

Sadly I don't think any of their studio albums will reach those targets any time soon. To the point we might not see it happen until the 2040s, lol, unless a reunion gives their music a very impactful

It does about 600 sales a week so should be at around 643k now then. 43k in a year is pretty good going hopefully it will get another boost at some point this and next year.

Regarding Stop being on course for Platinum:

12th April 2019: 494,000 total (a rounded figure) / 8th May 2020: 582,314 total. An increase of 88,314 sales in 56 weeks - that's an average of 1,577 sales a week. If it was selling that much each week now, Platinum would happen by 31st July.

However, we have to be mindful that their tour occurred in May/June 2019, when Stop would undoubtedly have got a big boost and increased the weekly average. Regardless, I'm confident that Platinum is 100% happening this year for Stop - I'll predict September. I'm excited for it to happen! It'll mean their first 9 single releases are all Platinum or Multi-Platinum. Unless I'm overlooking someone obvious... surely no other artist has managed that?

Stop's journey from seeming like it would always be Silver, to now being on the verge of Platinum, has been great to see. Thank you streaming

Here's some random old information I have about their re-entries in the singles chart in 2007. I've also included "end of the 1990s" totals / 2009 totals to show the sales increases. This is probably not too interesting, but seeing as I have this info, I may as well post it :heehee:

For some strange reason, the total sales provided for Stop & Viva Forever were only their download sales totals!

Note: Weekly sales from 11/11/2007 were worked out because percentage increase information was included on 18/11/2007.

Wannabe

End of 90s - Total: 1,180,000 (revised down from what it was originally thought to have sold physically - 1,269,000 was reported in 2002)

04/11/2007 - N/A - ? sales [Total: ‭1,194,154‬]

11/11/2007 - N/A - 338 sales [Total: ‭1,194,492‬]

18/11/2007 - #151 - 781 sales [Total: 817,435]

21/06/2009 - Total: 830,854 (+‭13,419‬ in 83 weeks // average: 162 sales a week)

Stop

End of 1998 - Total: 331,000

25/11/2007 - #174 - 782 sales [Download Total: 11,476]

21/06/2009 - Total: 334,369

^ I'm pretty certain that the total sales figure provided in June 2009 was only its physical sales. I suspect that Official Charts Company

had a problem with combining the physical and download sales of Stop (and Viva Forever) in their database, at the time. Not that it particularly

matters now, but at the time it did confuse me! I think it's safe to assume that it had really sold 346,000 by 25/11/2007, and based on how

the other singles increased by June 2009, I reckon Stop could have been approaching a total of 360,000.

Viva Forever

End of 90s - Total: 625,000

04/11/2007 - N/A - ? sales [Download Total: 8,843]

11/11/2007 - N/A - 312 sales [Download Total: 9,155]

25/11/2007 - #163 - 810 sales [Download Total: 10,977]

21/06/2009 - Total: 627,666

^ Like with Stop, that was a confusing 2009 total considering the total we had for it at the end of 1999.

I think Viva Forever would have sold nearer 650,000 by June 2009.

End of 90s - Total: 835,000

21/06/2009 - Total: 862,524 (+‭10,810‬ in 83 weeks // average: 130 sales a week)

If Stop is coming for plat then well f***ing deserved *.* Amongst my age group it’s probs their second most popular song, a sleeper hit!

 It's definitely great seeing that it's grown in popularity in recent years. In the 90s it looked like a bit of a blip in their run of singles (#2 was fine of course, but a 300k-ish total compared to the 600k-1,200k of their other singles made it look like it was far less popular). Nowadays... I agree with you, I feel like it's generally considered as being their second most popular/second most remembered hit!

I did some estimations for future sales/certifications!

I already speculated about Mama, Mama/Who Do You Think You Are and Goodbye here: http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?s...t&p=6539091

Wannabe - Based on sales information from November 2019 and May 2020, it seems likely that Wannabe will exceed 2 million by April 2021 - three months in advance of its 25th anniversary *.* Also, it could manage 4xPlatinum (2,400,000) in 2024.

Say You'll Be There - I predict 2xPlatinum (1,200,000) could happen in 2023!

2 Become 1 - 1.5m seems achievable by 2024, but 3xPlatinum (1,800,000) will require patience... it's currently on target to achieve that in 2031 :melaniec:

Spice Up Your Life - 2xPlatinum (1,200,000) could be on the cards just before its 25th anniversary in October 2022!

Too Much - Could become a "millionaire" in its 40th anniversary year (2037), possibly... :geri:

Viva Forever - ...but this single could pass a million units in time for Spiceworld's 30th anniversary in 2027.

Holler/Let Love Lead the Way - Gold (400,000) is a long way off, but it's something we could feasibly see happen within the next 10 years. I'm predicting it'll happen in 2028.

Headlines (Friendship Never Ends) - :kink: A silver certification could be a nice 100th birthday surprise for Mel? xox :melb:

Anything could happen though. The animation movie could prove to be a huge success and give their streaming a boost. Streaming in general could continue to grow and therefore make their sales increase faster. If they intend to reunite and tour again, then that would undoubtedly be another boost. The above predictions are based on their songs ticking along at the same rate as they've done over the past year/18 months.

In summary:

2020 - 600,000 [Platinum] - Stop (+ there's a possibility that it could exceed 1m sometime in the 2020s - possibly before Viva Forever manages it!)

2021 - 2,000,000 - Wannabe

2022 - 1,200,000 [2xPlatinum] - Spice Up Your Life

2023 - 1,200,000 [2xPlatinum] - Say You'll Be There

2023 - 1,000,000 - Goodbye

2024 - 2,400,000 [4xPlatinum] - Wannabe

2024 - 1,500,000 - 2 Become 1

2024 - 1,000,000 - Mama/Who Do You Think You Are

2024 - 200,000 [silver] - Mama

2027 - 1,000,000 - Viva Forever

2028 - 400,000 [Gold] - Holler/Let Love Lead the Way

2031 - 1,800,000 [3xPlatinum] - 2 Become 1

2037 - 1,000,000 - Too Much

Thank you very much Jay for all the information. It was a great read and interesting to see their sales around the time of the 2007 reunion.

Legally when did downloads begin in the U.K. was it 2005.

I remember seeing some of the SG singles in HMV shops circa 1999 just because they were so big, but unfortunately as singles had a shelf life and only a limited amount of time in shops, plus the digital and streaming era didn’t exist, it’s a shame they lost sales between 2000-2005.

Here's some random old information I have about their re-entries in the singles chart in 2007. I've also included "end of the 1990s" totals / 2009 totals to show the sales increases. This is probably not too interesting, but seeing as I have this info, I may as well post it :heehee:

This is actually super interesting, thanks Jay.

Interesting that over 10years, just in the UK they technically 'sold' 2million MORE singles. So actually you can assume that a couple more millions would have been added to the groups' total from Worldwide sales of their singles.

Suddenly, the 85million record sales figure, including the solos, doesnt seem so far fetched!

Ed Sheeran is a curse in this world. From the bland, horrible music to his bland, horrid overtake of the whole industry.... ENOUGH!!!

I'm sure in the last 10 years they have done a lot more than 2 million single sales WW outside the UK. Wannabe in the US will have done a lot of download/streaming sales I'm sure more than likely over 1m.

I seem to remember the week after the Olympics Wannabe and SUYL charted on the download US chart and SUYL had done like 98k downloads in total at the time in the US and Wannabe over 300k.

It is hard to know for sure as they never update their certifications outside of the automatic UK ones. When you think though that Wannabe on Spotify and YouTube is about to cross 1 billion views combined with the 2 main versions. That isn't including official remix plays or official audio only plays on YouTube and its Apple music, Amazon music, Tidal, deezer etc streams either.

I remember we got an official update of Wannabe be just under 3 million copies in the USA with downloads, from the original 1 million in the 90's. So that's nearly 2 million copies extra in the USA alone.

According to Billboard Books by the end of 1997 'Wannabe' had sold 1.8 million copies. By 2014, it was around 3 million with downloads added too.

I wish countries like the U.S. and Australia would update the group's certifications automatically similar to the UK :(

Ed Sheeran :drama: I would have assumed a couple of his earlier hits might have just been Gold, I guess I should have known that all this constant streaming of his albums would lead to all the singles being at least Platinum. Tbh let’s include his features xx
The bulk of their chart career pre-dates the BPI certifications. I think they only have one Platinum song, although plenty that have sold 600k+.
