Generally that is right. Many of the other songs have suddenly reached a new peak for some specific reason.

On the whole, yes. A couple of exceptions can be made though - "White Lines (Don't Don't Do It)" disappeared off the chart for a few weeks early in its run and "I'm Yours" was outside the Top 75 for one week after 3 weeks before returning.

They are certainly the more interesting.
Many of the others are just re-issues/re-enties appearing sometimes many years after original release that just happen to peak higher 2nd time round.

In homage to Ed Sheeran's "Thinking Out Loud" which reaches a new peak this week on its 17th appearance in the Top 75, I've compiled a list of records that took 15 or more weeks to reach their peak. All relate to time spent in the Top 75 (or lower when the chart was smaller) only.

Format

Imagine Dragons - Radioactive - 12 - 20 - Y

The longest time to peak in a single chart run, and what a great track too!
I wonder how much this has sold now, sorry wrong thread, must ask Vidcapper when he puts his YTD thread up later.....

35-56-67-52-59-58-50-46-38-38-33-41-48-65-54-36-31-32-18-{12}

After peaking no higher than 31 in it's first 17 weeks in dramatically climbed to 18 and then 12....

Something must have happened? Did it get used on an ad or on tv for such interest to suddenly take hold?

It climbed to #18 on the album's release week for one thing. I have a feeling there was something else as well which I now forget.

If 'Thinking Out Loud' by Ed Sheeran reaches number 1 this week - and I think it most likely will manage it - it will create chart history as the record with the slowest climb to number 1 in one chart run. Currently the record is held by 'The Power Of Love' by Jennifer Rush (1985) and 'Think Twice' by Celine Dion (1995) which both reached number 1 on their respective 16th chart weeks. 'Rockstar' by Nickelback almost did it on either its 17th or 18th chart week and if I recall was a midweek number 1 for one or two days.

Actually "Telephone" by Lady GaGa and Beyonce holds the record. 18 weeks it took that to eventually leap 12-1.

Telephone

30-41-62-74R(2)-67-55-48-49-42-39-39-34-37-31-12-{1}

are we counting positions lower than 75?

30-41-62-82-74-67-55-48-49-42-39-39-34-37-31-12-{1} (17 weeks)

If we are counting Dead or Alive and Jennifer Rush's countless weeks bouncing between 45 and 65 then yes, we are. Top 100 is official anyway.

If we include all weeks inside the top 100 then 'The Power Of Love' by Jennifer Rush also reached number 1 on its 17th week as the single entered the top 100 at number 97 a week before entering the Top 75 at number 65 the following week.

I've always followed the Guinness Hit Singles approach, which is to consider the Top 75 as the "official" part of the chart. But either way, if Ed Sheeran does make number 1 this week then he will have the clear record for the longest (or slowest!) climb to the top.

What was the previous slowest climb within the top 40? Ed must be set to break that record by quite a lot.

Celine Dion I think, with 14 weeks.

And it was number 1 for ages. sad.gif

Clarity did peak at 27 when it originally peaked at 29 the year before. But that was due to it being sent to radios finally
