Over the course of June, you've been posting your ratings for Madonna's 13 #1s in celebration of 'Into the Groove', Madonna's first #1, turning 30 this month.

Big thanks to the 23 members who posted in the thread (I've since made it invisible to prevent any cheating!!).

I shall be counting down from, hopefully, tomorrow until the Top 2 are revealed on the 28th, the date 'Into the Groove' topped the chart.

Please do post comments along the way!

Highest Points: 10 (Ultraviolence1989, Acidburn), 9.5 (Liam, Insomnio)
Lowest Points: -1 (Griff), 3 (dandystar)

Commentary
Perhaps to no-one's surprise, last place is home to Madonna's cover of 'American Pie'. Madonna took on the 1971 Don McLean classic after being persuaded to do so for her upcoming film The Next Best Thing. The song was cut from eight to four minutes, trading the folky guitar of the original for William Orbit's swirling and beeping electronic beat, upon which Madonna gave a gentle vocal performance, to give a more relaxed affair. This was, however, at the expense of losing the meaning of the original (although there was probably no intention of keeping it; not sure what the new meaning was supposed to be), but a nod was given to it by premiering the track on the 41st anniversary of 1959 events. 'American Pie' was attached to the end of Music, but I think it fits well on there, especially following the similarly tender-sounding 'Paradise (Not for Me)' and 'Gone'. I in fact prefer Madge's version but completely appreciate the value of the original.
I've never actually heard the orginal version oops. LOVE Madge's one though.

Has anyone seen The Next Best Thing? Is it as terrible as the critics made out?

Really? :o Admittedly I never hear it on TV/radio but I thought it was a version that everyone had heard whether they wanted to or not! :P

I have seen the film and shown it to non fans who all enjoyed it!

It is not terrible at all, one of her better films!! Her performance isn't spectacular but the film is cool because it is a comedy / drama.

Yeah, I kind of got that impression from the trailer. Slightly My Best Friend's Wedding esque.

Perhaps the least remembered of Madonna #1 songs is 'Who's That Girl?', the lead single of the soundtrack to the rom-com of the same name in which Madonna features. Its success was, however, no surprise for this was the first release since the mammoth True Blue era and, at this point, Madonna could quite easily have farted out the alphabet and it would still be better than Auto-Tune Baby have gone to #1. Also working to its favour was probably the fact it took influence from her previous #1, 'La Isla Bonita' and its Hispanic style, just swapping guitar with trumpets. It's fun and carefree - a closing chapter on Madonna's first part of her career before she got introspective with Like a Prayer.

The tour helped this claim number 1!

The live version is far superior to the album track, so pleased she is hinting that it's on the setlist for the upcoming tour!

Oh absolutely! She seemed to have so much fun on stage on the Who's That Girl Tour and this song really came to life on it.

Receiving a -1 and an 11, '4 Minutes' certainly divided opinions the most. The intro kicks in with a slick Timbaland-produced melody before Madonna and Justin sing in traditional duet alternation about saving the world (perhaps inspired by the 2007 Live Earth concert?) with a chanting "Ma-DAH-na" and a 'Hung Up'-esque "tick tock". It's a pretty mainstream track - there were very few R&B tracks at the time that weren't Timbaland productions - which is unusual for Madonna, but it did the job and gave her a huge, albeit last, #1 around the globe and got her an A-listing by Radio 1 at nearly the age of 50. How times have changed!

4 minutes spent 4 weeks at number 1

I couldn't stop playing this track when it was released ! Awesome video too!!

I actually love American Pie and prefer Madonna's version to the original, I thought she did something very different and unique with it. But the film "The Next Best Thing" was truly awful, as are most of her movies. It just fell flat in every aspect and didn't make me chuckle once. No wonder her movie career never took off, but I did enjoy "Shangai Surprise" though, even though everybody hated it.

HER SECOND BEST SONG EVER

What's your fave? I'm a fan but '4 Minutes' is WAY off being my favourite. It's perhaps 4th on my post-Confessions singles though. :D

American Pie is WAY too low, what a song <3 I always find it underrated. The original is really dull imo and just drags and drags.

I'm surprised to say that 'True Blue' just makes the Top 10, with a considerable amount of 8-10 scores to counteract the couple of sub 5 scores. Most already know this was a love song to then-husband Sean Penn, which is made more obvious with its sickly-sweet, bubblegum pop sound, said to be inspired by girl groups of the 60s. "Cute" very much comes to mind when I hear it, especially with the tinkly bells in the chorus, and probably one you'd avoid if you're not the romantic kind. In the music video, Madonna seemingly uses Pat Butcher as a fashion influence.

Nice. ^_^ Huge standout from American Life.

It's pretty much right for me, although it's certainly nowhere near her worst single by any means. I think for pop lovers, Madonna's version is definitely the more preferable but I think rock fans would slaughter you if they heard! :P
