September 15, 200915 yr Author Wow, a lot of covers and samples here! A few comments: 1 43 Blue (Da Ba Dee) EIFFEL 65 Initally charting on import, this was a strong contender for song of the summer... Love it or hate it you couldn't get away from it! Three Italian guys, who are in fact still recording! 2 2 Mambo No. 5 LOU BEGA Another contender for song of the summer, one your grandma might have liked, with it's Perez Prado sample... 3 - Sun Is Shining BOB MARLEY Vs FUNKSTAR DELUXE Another summer song, but a cut above the first two. Even if the funky house backing was uninspired, Bob's vocals and songwriting shone through... 4 1 We're Going To Ibiza! VENGABOYS The second of two number ones for the Dutch group, after doing unspeakable things to Paul Lekakis, Typically Tropical's Barbados their poor victims this time 5 - Get Get Down PAUL JOHNSON Catchy but underground house track, something like this would have no chance at number one these days... 6 3 The Launch DJ JEAN (Almost) instrumental trance music from the Dutch DJ. You'll have realised by now that this is a rather dance and European heavy chart... 7 - Burning Down The House TOM JONES & THE CARDIGANS The first hit from his HUGE Reloaded album, which later produced Sex Bomb and Baby It's Cold Outside... This was originally recorded by Talking Heads in 1982. 8 4 Mickey LOLLY Toni Basil cover by surprisingly successful BBC kids presenter Anna Kumble. She had a further five top 20 hits, but this was her biggest 9 6 (Mucho Mambo) Sway SHAFT More summer dance, this time sampling Rosemary Clooney (George's aunt) 10 8 Bailamos ENRIQUE IGLESIAS First hit for son of Julio, and probably the one that's closest to his dad's style 11 - Toca Me FRAGMA The original instrumental version, re-imagined as Toca's Miracle, a number 9 five months later with the vocals of Coco 12 5 Friends Forever THUNDERBUGS One of the mediocre but popular indie girl bands like Hepburn and Scarlet that were one part Spice Girls to one part Bangles, this lot were a one hit wonder 13 - Brand New Day STING Past his peak, but Gordon Sumner still churning them out 14 10 I've Got You MARTINE McCUTCHEON Originally Tiff in EastEnders, had a surprisingly prolific singing career, her only number one was her debut Perfect Moment 15 12 Better Off Alone DJ JURGEN presents ALICE DEEJAY The same producers as the Vengaboys with a singer called Judy. No, not Alice. A little more credible than the Vengas, and another summer dance anthem 16 11 Mi Chico Latino GERI HALLIWELL Ginger Spice's first solo number one, with the most unconvincing Spanish this side of Chris De Burgh 17 7 Afrika Shox LEFTFIELD / AFRIKA BAMBAATAA Paul Daley and Neil Barnes from London with the DJ and rapper from The Bronx... Both artists' biggest UK hits, but they are better remembered for Open Up and Planet Rock respectively 18 15 Unpretty TLC T-Boz, Left Eye and Chilli with their joint biggest UK hit with Creep. Lisa Left Eye Lopes died in a car crash in 2002 :( 19 9 Moving SUPERGRASS Written off as one hit wonder these days due to the hugeness of Alright, this band were third in line to Blur and Oasis back in the day 20 - All N My Grill MISSY ELLIOTT feat. MC SOLAAR One of Missy's many hits, but the only UK hit for French rapper Claude M'Barali 21 13 Sing It Back MOLOKO Second time around for this dance anthem from the band that formed in 1995 22 - Supersonic JAMIROQUAI Another surprisingly huge band, cat in the hat Jay Kay and his revolving cast of backing musicians started out on Acid Jazz in 1992, and went on to have three number one albums 23 17 If I Let You Go WESTLIFE Another generic pop track from the Irish boyband, but this one was at least slightly uptempo, thanks to Max Martin 24 19 Livin' La Vida Loca RICKY MARTIN Another huge summer hit, although this was now beginning to plummet. The first UK hit for Enrique Morales who debuted in Puerto Rican boyband Menudo in 1984 25 - Canto Della Terra ANDREA BOCELLI Lead single from Sogno, the first international hit album by the blind tenor 26 16 Summer Girls LYTE FUNKIE ONES New Kids On The Block esque US boyband pop, memorably parodied by Eminem on his first album 27 - Five Fathoms EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL Peak position for the biggest hit from their 1999 album Tempremental 28 14 There She Goes SIXPENCE NONE THE RICHER Twee-pop cover The La's 1990 hit, second of two hits for the group and follow up to the smash Kiss Me (nothing to do with Steven Tin Tin Duffy) 29 20 Drinking In L.A. BRAN VAN 3000 Canadian hip-hop/indie crossover getting their only major UK hit on the back of a beer advert, though 2001's Astounded was superior and featured Curtis Mayfield's last vocal recording 30 23 When You Say Nothing At All RONAN KEATING Formerly of Boyzone of course, Mr Keating actually had a knack for covering (and writing) US country hits, this one originally belonging to Alison Kraus, and somehow ending up in Notting Hill, one of the years biggest films 31 18 Summertime Of Our Lives A1 Boyband featuring Ben "Celebrity Big Brother" Adams, whose biggest era was yet to come 32 21 The Kids Aren't Alright THE OFFSPRING Paying tribute to The Who, at least in titles. The US rock group's biggest UK hit was, of course, Pretty Fly For A White Guy 33 26 Summer Son TEXAS Biggest single from The Hush, follow up to 1995's huge White On Blonde. This disco influenced track had a remix from Giorgio Moroder. 34 33 That Don't Impress Me Much SHANIA TWAIN Canadian one time country-pop superstar and Mrs Mutt Lange, here with her joint biggest UK hit with the equally horrible Man I Feel Like A Woman 35 22 Red Sun Rising LOST WITNESS UK trance act with the second hit after Happiness Happening 36 27 Wild Wild West WILL SMITH The Fresh Prince himself with a not so fresh movie theme, sampling Stevie Wonder and Kool Moe Dee 37 - Central Reservation BETH ORTON Norwich based Brit-award winning singer songwriter, who first came to prominence working with William Orbit and the Chemical Brothers in 1995 38 31 1999 BINARY FINARY Remix of 1998 from the previous year (natch) from the British trance duo 39 25 Summertime ANOTHER LEVEL featuring TQ Second to last single from Dane Bowers and friends with the rapper responsible for Westside the year before 40 29 Profit In Peace OCEAN COLOUR SCENE Hyped as the new The Jam and at their biggest around 1996, lead singer Simon Fowler was outed as gay in The Sun in 1998 41 38 Why Does It Always Rain On Me? TRAVIS One of the most memorable hits for the Scottish indie stars who seem to be rather down the dumper lately, this only got to number 10 42 36 Guilty Conscience EMINEM feat. DR DRE Second hit from his debut The Slim Shady LP 43 39 Sometimes BRITNEY SPEARS Also second hit, back when she was sweet and innocent, even if this was a rubbish ballad 44 34 I Wouldn't Believe Your Radio STEREOPHONICS Fourth hit from Performance And Cocktails, the first number one album by the Welsh indie boys fronted by a man named Kelly Jones, 45 37 Stop The Rock APOLLO FOUR FORTY Follow-up to the Liverpool originated dance act, #10 follow up to their biggest hit, Lost In Space that peaked at #4 46 30 Mamma Mia A TEENS Dance remake of ABBA hit by the Swedish Steps, a remnant of the third wave of ABBAmania, brought on by the Brits performance an the stage debut of the musical of the same name 47 40 If Ya Gettin' Down FIVE Number 2 single from the boyband that made an aborted comeback in 2007-8, samping Indeep here 48 - Someday We'll Know NEW RADICALS Second of two hits for Gregg Alexander who came out from his writing and production netherworld to rock the planet with You Get What You Give. Later covered by Hall And Oates! 49 - Pleasure Love DE FUNK Alias of Supafly Inc, made up of Andrew Tumi, Christos Papathanasiou, Gary Sharkie and Panos Liassi, the latter two best known as Amen UK 50 32 Every Day AGNELLI & NELSON Biggest hit for the UK trance group
September 15, 200915 yr 1 43 Blue (Da Ba Dee) EIFFEL 65 2 2 Mambo No. 5 LOU BEGA Ha! The ultimate cheeses of 1999. :P
September 15, 200915 yr There is no point commenting on the dance stuff that was hot at the time so here's some of the other stuff 7 - Burning Down The House TOM JONES & THE CARDIGANS - Why oh why does everybody love him. He sings like a wounded bison and takes pride in the fact that he breaks mikes thereby showing up his complete lack of vocal finesse. 17 7 Afrika Shox LEFTFIELD / AFRIKA BAMBAATAA - I loved Leftfield and thought that the album this came from was really underrated 19 9 Moving SUPERGRASS - Britpop survivors with a song I could never quite make my mind up about 28 14 There She Goes SIXPENCE NONE THE RICHER - Oh God!!! Awful cover from essential indie band of the early 90s 32 21 The Kids Aren't Alright THE OFFSPRING - Offspring started off so right with Come Out and Play. Five years later and this is the best they can come up with? 40 29 Profit In Peace OCEAN COLOUR SCENE - Boring! Boring! Boring! 41 38 Why Does It Always Rain On Me? TRAVIS - Like having a bucket of cold sick thrown over you. 44 34 I Wouldn't Believe Your Radio STEREOPHONICS - Only one word for this - dour. 45 37 Stop The Rock APOLLO FOUR FORTY - I love this. Great track.
September 16, 200915 yr Is that the most summery top 6 ever? Every one of those songs is a classic example of a summer hit, whether it was played in Ibiza or just mentions it! Great ones from Alice Deejay, Fragma and Binary Finary in there too, and I know it's not usually my style of music but I love that Supergrass track too. I've already said this is my all-time fave year for music and while there's a lot of cheese in here, still a great chart. Surprised also to see the New Radicals there? I heard they split up after You Get What You Give and never had another hit, but I guess they released one more!

September 16, 200915 yr Author I'm amazed at all the dance stuff you like Mushy :o Especially Alice Deejay :kink:
September 16, 200915 yr 01. Eiffel 65 - Blue A true guilty pleasure. It was defendable at the time as I was only a young teen. But the truth is I would still listen to this now. 02. Lou Bega - Mambo No5 I ABHORED this. You couldn't escape this at the time and it was utterly unbearable nonsense. 05. Paul Johnson - Get Get Down Good god, this is easily one of the WORST songs of all time. I know dance music isn't exactly known for it's deep and meaningful lyrics, but this was really like an unfunny parody. Thank God he was a one-hit wonder. 07. Tom Jones and The Cardigans - Burning Down The House The second guilty pleasure of the chart, so kitsch. 12. Thunderbugs - Friends Forever And guilty pleasure #3. 15. DJ Jurgen & Alice Deejay - Better Off Alone It really was so frustrating seeing this come so close to snatching #1 only to be beaten off by tripe like Westlife and Geri. 21. Moloko - Sing It Back A hugely over-rated track. You could never find anyone to say a bad word about this, but that made me hate it all the more. I HATE Roisin's vocals in this, she just sounds a bit speshul. SHING IT BACK. 43. Britney Spears - Sometimes Another one to join Paul Johnson in the "worst songs of all-time" category. Cheesy schmalz of the worst kind. 50. Agnelli & Nelson - Everyday WONDERFUL. I really LOVED the euphoric trance that was coming out in this era. A shame it all got spoilt a few years later.
September 17, 200915 yr I'm amazed at all the dance stuff you like Mushy :o Especially Alice Deejay :kink: i didnt like it enough to BUY it though! lol.. 'better off alone' though was a good pop track. but yes, i liked the general style of dance in 99... didnt like it much before, nor after, for me on a personal level 99 was the peak.
September 17, 200915 yr Author I agree totally, 1999 was an amazing time for dance music... I'll do a proper review soon, sorry if my comments were a bit generic/Dave Taylor before...
September 17, 200915 yr I agree totally, 1999 was an amazing time for dance music... I'll do a proper review soon, sorry if my comments were a bit generic/Dave Taylor before... abit 'dave taylor'? no probs, the hard works done now, getting the first chart going, afterwards its just a case of watching the new entries... dont forget to check 'on this day' for daily events from 99...and grebo from 89... :) thanks guys :)
September 17, 200915 yr 5 - Get Get Down PAUL JOHNSON 11 - Toca Me FRAGMA 19 9 Moving SUPERGRASS 20 - All N My Grill MISSY ELLIOTT feat. BRAN VAN 3000 38 31 1999 BINARY FINARY 50 32 Every Day AGNELLI & NELSON Hmmmm again, it's only the dance tracks that pretty much rescue a bloody rubbish year full of insipid manufactured pop.
September 17, 200915 yr 21. Moloko - Sing It Back A hugely over-rated track. You could never find anyone to say a bad word about this, but that made me hate it all the more. I HATE Roisin's vocals in this, she just sounds a bit speshul. SHING IT BACK. You didn't try hard enough  . I loathed it at the time and made no secret of the fact. After ten years it's still dreadful.

During the 1950's he scored twenty UK Top 30 singles including the UK No.2 'Green Door.' He was awarded an OBE in 1965, and a CBE in 1996. Sad stuff, love a bit of Tower Of Strength :(
September 17, 200915 yr Hmm... I see ten years has passed since the release of the first Slipknot album which made #37 in the UK. Quite late for this but then, that was the start of their breakthrough... :o They reissued it as 10th Anniversary edition in 09/09/09. Edited September 17, 200915 yr by FM11

September 18, 200915 yr Author Me neither really, I don't like his other stuff, but TOS is an easy match for Gene McDaniels' US original. Today in 1999: It was reported that Smashing Pumpkins bassist D'Arcy Wretzky had quit the band. Never been a huge fan, but they had a couple of good songs :)
September 19, 200915 yr Author Today in 1999: Christina Aguilera was at No.1 on the US album chart with her self-titled debut album. It's funny how she started out as an innocent, Britney type at first, then turned into a whore by the release of the second album
