Posted September 25, 200915 yr The newly-installed president of the United Nations, Ali Abdussalam Treki, has said that homosexuality is "not really acceptable". Treki, who is the Libyan secretary of African Union Affairs, opened the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly Friday with a press conference. One question concerned the UN resolution which calls for the universal criminalisation of homosexuality. In reply, Treki said: "That matter is very sensitive, very touchy. As a Muslim, I am not in favour of it . . . it is not accepted by the majority of countries. My opinion is not in favour of this matter at all. I think it's not really acceptable by our religion, our tradition. “It is not acceptable in the majority of the world. And there are some countries that allow that, thinking it is a kind of democracy . . . I think it is not,” he added. The ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs committee, Florida's Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, told On Top Magazine: "The anti-gay bigotry spewed by this Qaddafi shill demonstrates once again that the UN has been hijacked by advocates of hate and intolerance." http://www.pinknews.co.uk/news/articles/2005-14245.html
September 25, 200915 yr Author Fair enough it goes against his religion and alot of do not agree with it, but imo the united nations president should not have views like this... and even if he does, he shouldn't say it to the media... Just going to cause more hate
September 25, 200915 yr Author This article about the pope ties in to this and The UN, so will post it too... I highly dislike this pope -_- Gay humanist groups are planning to hold "strong" protests when Pope Benedict XVI visits the UK early next year. Pope Benedict has been critical of homosexuality in the past and the Pink Triangle Trust and the Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association (GALHA) are calling for demonstrations against his views. Similar protests were held when Pope John Paul II visited Britain in 1982. GALHA members are to hold a protest outside the Labour Party Conference in Brighton next week over the invitation. GALHA secretary David Christmas said: "As a European citizen and leader of a religious group with a significant following in the UK, the Pope is of course welcome to visit Britain, provided that he obeys our laws. However, the idea that he should be feted and lauded as some kind of hero is a direct insult to all of those people whose lives have been blighted by his extreme doctrinal positions." In a statement, Pink Triangle Trust secretary George Broadhead said: "This Pope has shown himself to be paranoid about homosexuality. His opposition to LGBT rights knows no bounds. In his Christmas message last year he declared that saving humanity from homosexual behaviour was as important as saving the rainforest from destruction. "This must be the most outrageous and bizarre claim yet made by someone who has already got a well-deserved reputation as one of the most viciously homophobic world leaders on a par with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran and Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe. "The Vatican reinforced its anti-gay reputation by strongly opposing a UN declaration calling for an end to discrimination against gays and the Pope's Christmas message provided clear evidence of an obsession about homosexuality which is tantamount to paranoia." The Pope has also claimed that condoms will not prevent HIV and are even making the situation in sub-Sarahan Africa worse. Broadhead continued: "It is imperative that the strongest possible protest be made when he visits the UK next year."
September 25, 200915 yr Once again, religion is the basis of prejudice and hatred. WELL FANCY THAT. Frankly I'm not as fired up about it as I should be. He may be head of the UN, but it's not like any of the Western nations are going to take views like that seriously, so MEH. We're safe.
September 25, 200915 yr Don't you have to be, you know, diplomatic to earn such a position?? There are some great leaders coming out of Africa who are really trying and succeeding to reform and improve their countries' situations, but the UN chooses this idiot from Libya. It should be noted that this guy is not the Secretary General, the actual head of the UN, he is just in the rotating position for 1 year... And by the way, 6 African nations have signed the declaration to decriminalize homosexuality: Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Gabon, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritius, and São Tomé and Príncipe. Further South Africa has legalized gay marriage. There are many progressives in Africa and they should be given special attention in the UN.

Ugh, trying to keep up with the pope, it's exhausting... there's a post from a few months back filled with memorable pope-bashing, someone care to find it so we don't have to repeat oursevles? :)
September 25, 200915 yr hmm... nothing new or tbh unexpected. i wouldnt be surprised if this becomes a hot topic tbh with most of the muslim and christian worlds 'ganging up' against the more enlightened. these people running the world really dont have a fcukin clue...and thats scarey.
September 26, 200915 yr Yet again, proof positive that MAN MADE Religion is at the heart of all the bigotry and evil in this world.... Religion has nothing to do with true Spirituality, and being at one with "God", Shiva, Gaia, the Universe, whatever 'higher power' you happen to believe in.... Spiritual one-ness and inner connectedness comes from within your own being, and cant be "taught" by a church, mosque or temple.... Organised religions are basically flawed, manipulative and completely against the concept of true Spirituality... Even JESUS, the "Son Of God", you know, in the BIBLE, had a problem with organised religion... And Moses as well, who saw "Idolatory" (the worship of FALSE IDOLS OR ICONS, so, that would almost certainly include your FUKKIN' POPES and YOUR FUKKIN' AYATOLLAHS...) as a MORTAL SIN.... It doesn't matter one jot if it's Christianity, Islam or Judaism... It's basically all the same old cr@p..... These stupid c/unts are just fighting wars and causing havoc over what is basically the same thing..... It really is time to end this insane and destructive hate affair we have with organised religion, and looked more within, and believed in OURSELVES rather than a stupid, non-existent deity.... If there ever was a "God", it grew sick and bloody tired of "humanity" a long, LONG time ago.....

Further South Africa has legalized gay marriage. There are many progressives in Africa and they should be given special attention in the UN. Nice to see 3 Portuguese speaking African countries signing that, curiously in a time where Portugal is also talking about legalizing gay marriage. I agree that someone in such a high position should not say things like that.
September 26, 200915 yr Don't understand the fuss really, while I don't agree with what he says the day a muslim speaks out in favour of homosexuality will be the day hell freezes over, homophobia is their culture just as it is many extreme christians, much as I don't agree with what he says it is not up to the west to impose its culture and values on other nations and religions If Gordon Brown held a reception in the UN and the food was bacon sandwiches and champagne you can bet islam would be up in arms and calling a fatwa on Brown Each culture to their own
September 27, 200915 yr I think the more pressing question is how the hell did that idiot get the presidency? His anti-homosexual views shouldn't really be a surprise given the disgusting hero's welcome the Lockerbie [sp?] Bomber received upon his return to Libya. The country isn't exactly PC now is it?

All muslim nations are homophobic though not just Libya, some countries have the death penalty for homosexuality so are still in the dark ages so a muslim speaking out against homosexuality does not shock me one bit, although it is bizarre given muslims worship a paedophile who married a 9 year old girl, fukkin hypocrites -_- -_- Edited September 27, 200915 yr by B.A Baracus

He's really the public face of the mainstream Catholic Church, and the Catholic Church's views on homsexuality are pretty well known as being completely and utterly barking.... There's also vastly more hypocrisy in Catholicism with regards to p**** priests than there is in Islam... You're talking about Mohammed, who was around in a time when concepts such as paedophilia weren't even in existence, so, it wasn't considered morally wrong at that time to marry a 9-year old girl, like it or not, we cannot instil our 21st Century standards onto events which may or may not have taken place well over a thousand years ago, the world was a completely different place..... Hell, it wasn't until recently (in the past 30 years) that it was considered wrong for a husband to rape his wife FFS..... For hundreds of years "marital rape" didn't exist, it was seen as the man's "right" to have sex with his wife regardless of whether she actually wanted to or not, a wife was considered her husband's property, and this is "nice, cuddly" Christianity... This is exactly why we needed the Feminist movement in the 60s and 70s..... Dont make out like Christianity is somehow "better" than Islam, that is both false and very, very dangerous thinking..... In my view, they're all the fukkin' same....

Religion is all about hypocrisy <_>
September 27, 200915 yr Er, I dont actually see the Pope being an "extreme Christian" mate My opinions of the Catholic Church are well documented on here ;) The target for my post was particularly Jamaica where your life is in danger if you are a homosexual, Jamaicans are the most homophobic people I have ever come across, some Jamaicans make this loony at the UN seem like a bleeding heart libreral, and I also meant parts of America like the deep south and areas like Utah and those f***wits who voted against gay rights in Califormia etc, extreme levels of religious bigotry, I know quite a few Christians and the ones I know by and large have the same "live and let live" attitude that I have to homosexuality
September 28, 200915 yr we seem to be brushing his viewpoints to one side because, ah well, he's Muslim, of course Muslims will hate the gays. Well..... sorry, that old one doesn't wash anymore. Isn't intolerance and prejudice now illegal? If this bigoted jerk had made these comments against, let's say, Chinese or black people.... "oh, they exist, but I don't really approve of them" - he'd be out on his arse, stripped of his priveliged, highly-paid position, before he could quote a few paedophile passages from his prophet's book. And he should be out now after these incredibly naive, backward comments - by allowing people in power to express negativity like this is giving bigots the green light. Including Adolf in the Vatican who deserves every rotten egg and blackened tomato I hope he gets on his forthcoming tour.
September 29, 200915 yr I'm guessing that this dick is of a background where he was brainwashed into a certain culture and against another. Society itself has always been harsh in Africa, and in comparison to the rest of the world, a long mile harsher. Singling Muslim or Christian nations only is a bit short-sighted because there ARE as much (in ratio to Islam and Christianity) Athiests, Satanists etc, who would also be against gay marriage. Legalising gay marriage in South Africa was one huge struggle. So many were against, the Afrikaans (who are anything but OTT Christians) and the Traditionilists (the simple African God formalists) were completely against it. The only reason why it happened was so that South Africa could return in the good books of some of the powerhouse nations in the world, attract more foreigners, increase investment and so on. Not because the majority of the nation accepted gay marriage. What this guy said was obviously wrong and unjustified but singling religion out as the only cause is just as unjustified. Homophobes are not just "Jesus or Allah freaks", maybe half, and that half usually keep their phobias to themselves instead of making it public as this bloke has. Its majorly a whole personal insecurity issue and not just religion-influenced IMO, and neither a combination of both because religion is a really just a convenient excuse for acting out one's insecurities in unjustified and confidence-enriching ways.
September 29, 200915 yr That's a really worrying view for someone in such a powerful position to have, religion really needs to be brought into the 21st century.
September 29, 200915 yr my worry is that as islam spreads, through immigration and natural 'recruitment', the muslim ideologies will become more mainstream in world politics. the conflict for me is that whilst in a democratic world proportional reprisentation would be the right way to go, undeveloped, backward, ways of thinking will be more prevailant thus creating more conflict for 'minority' groups based on sex, sexuality and religion.
