Posted November 20, 200915 yr Was just online checking my account with RBS, when all of a sudden, something caught my eye on their Home Page... Students are now getting Interest Free Overdrafts of £2750 in their FIRST YEAR..... I mean, sorry, but WHAT THE FUKK????? Have these idiots learned nothing from the Credit Crunch????? They come to the tax-payer cap-in-hand to get us to underwrite "Toxic Debts", they seem to absolutely REFUSE to be giving money to small businesses, and now it seems that they're giving students these huge overdrafts.... I never even got HALF this offered to me when I was a student... Most I got was a £1250 overdraft facility.... What the hell is going on with this...? And of course, you just KNOW that the skint student out there is gonna be tempted very much so by this offer.... Totally fukkin' irresponsible or what???? <_< <_< Sometimes I just think we SHOULD have just let the banking system collapse in on itself, they are never gonna learn the lesson that too-easy credit, toxic debt, sub-prime mortgages and CDOs is what caused all this mess to begin with...... I shudder to think what students are being offered in the second, third and fourth years of their courses......
November 20, 200915 yr WTF? Surely the government (and the tax payer) should step in and just 'Oi what do you think you're doing? We OWN you!' I had a student account with Natwest and got a £1250 overdraft (interest free) and a free railcard for five years and I didn't get to the limit until AFTER I HAD FINISHED in which I upgraded to a 'Graduate account' and got £2000 overdraft interest free for one year. That's now -£1400 with interest (around £20 a month) but by the new year it should be at -£1000 so I don't get any interest and I can concentrate on getting it to 0. Also I work voluntarily for a Money Advice service and this is not the worst thing I've seen.. One of the advisers I work for was laughing the other day when a client was offered credit cards and loans after they'd already gone bankrupt! And there's many more worse than that! EDIT: Then again Student Loans Company have f*cked everything up this year and 1/3 haven't got their money yet! Edited November 20, 200915 yr by Grandwicky
November 20, 200915 yr That's so idiotic. Last year I had a massive argument with my flatmate because he was spending his entire overdraft (near £3000) and was never in the black, whereas I survived easily on a £500 overdraft (and never went into it, actually). He didn't seem to understand where the money was coming from and how it could potentially seriously affect the economy. It's only going to make matters worse because there are idiotic students out there who will take them up on it, waste it and ultimately it's going to cost.
November 20, 200915 yr Author EDIT: Then again Student Loans Company have f*cked everything up this year and 1/3 haven't got their money yet! Yeah, well, which is probably why this is occuring actually, if one were to read into it.... Skint students still waiting for their loans after about 6 bloody weeks into their courses, Student Finance England are copping all this flak for being basically a bunch of incompentent arseholes, then RBS (owned by the Taxpayer...) pipes up with this "great offer"... Coincidence...?? I think not.... <_< This has Alistair Darling's fingerprints all over it if you ask me....
November 30, 200915 yr SAAS have f***ed up big time too. [student Awards Agency Scotland] The Student Loan Company and SAAS have totally cocked up this year. A lot of scottish students are getting f*** all or a tiny amount of what they should be, and they still haven't sorted it out yet. They both seem to be blaiming each other. luckily i'm getting my cash ok, and i haven't dipped into the £600 overdraft that came with my current account. [HBOS]

There needs to be a serious and independent investigation into all of this nonsense, it cannot possibly be a coincidence that both of them have screwed up royally this year.....
November 30, 200915 yr EDIT: Then again Student Loans Company have f*cked everything up this year and 1/3 haven't got their money yet! Oh my heart bleeds. NOT. They won't be able to go to the pub as much then will they? Maybe they'll remember why they're at University and actually attend a few lectures and do some studying. Oh and before you all accuse me of not knowing what I'm talking about, a poster on another forum who started Uni just last month is constantly bragging about what a great life it is, spending half the day in bed shagging his new girlfriend, drinking and attending hardly any lectures in a week!  Edited November 30, 200915 yr by Crazy Chris

No money means not being able to pay tuition fees, buy books, pay the rent or buy food. Yes, it also means no money to spend on leisure activities but that pales in comparison with not being able to pay for essentials.

SAAS have a tiny number of students to deal with [although they have twice the work as they pay tuition fees opnm behalf of the government to the uni's for every student] they should have sorted it out by now. A lot of students depend on the loan to pay for thier tuition and rent. Not all of us have our lives funded by rthe taxpayer.

You have NO RIGHT WHATSOEVER to talk about anyone living the 'Life of Riley', lazy arse, workshy c/unts like you are doing this at the taxpayer's expense YEAR IN YEAR OUT and frankly I'm bloody sick and tired of it.... And then you have the brass nerve to slag off students WHO DONT GET A PENNY FROM THE TAXPAYER....... <_< <_< Frankly, I'd rather fund the lifestyle of a student for a few years knowing that at the end of it they're likely to get a decent job and then pay it back in taxes, than to fund the lifestyle of a bone idle chav who's never worked, and likely never will work a day in their lives, if it were up to me mate, you'd bloody well work, you'd better believe it..... Already this year on of the disabled students I've been working with has had to pull out of a course because of being p!ssed about by Student Finance England and not having the proper support or funding in place so he can continue his course... You just have NO FUKKIN' IDEA WHATSOEVER of the very real hardships going on here you insufferable, ignorant tw@t because you live in an Ivory Tower where you think you're owed a bloody living, GET OUT AND EARN IT YOU FUKKING FAKER, and maybe then you'll learn to have respect for others, and more importantly, YOURSELF..... Honestly, it really is the fukkin' limit that you actually think you're entitled to slag off people who, unlike you, do actually want to achieve something with their lives.... And dont give me this BS about your "depression"... I'm sick of hearing that as an excuse.... <_<

Erm, I don't know if you're capable of basic LOGIC, but not every student is the same. Have you not stopped to think that perhaps he may have his own funds, hence is completely unaffected by this issue? Or perhaps that his situation IS NOT INDICATIVE OF EVERYBODY'S? As others have said, I'm stunned you think students have it so easy based on just one case. No wonder you believe any f***ing thing you read...

As others have said, I'm stunned you think students have it so easy based on just one case. No wonder you believe any f***ing thing you read... Exactly! I personally haven't been affected by the cock up, but i know people who have. A lot of students also have part time jobs to pay for thier cost of living. The student loan covers a years rent and no more. Without mine i'd be up $h!t creek because i don't have an interest free overdraft, and my god i'd be quite far into it the now. Yes there are some people who live more of a party lifestyle, but it's rare that it is funded by a loan. Which by the way Chris, we have to pay back, with interest. Unlike your nice little non-repayable cheques it doesn't come from the taxpayer either. The only part of my education that is taxpayer funded is my Tuition fees of £1,800/year. And thats only because i live in scotland. Without SAAS paying that i wouldn't have been able to afford to go to uni.
December 2, 200915 yr Author The part of my post after my first smiley seems to have conveniently gone over your head Scott. Care to comment on him then? No, frankly, I dont care about that example tbh... ONE student that posts some sh"te on the Internet doesn't make them the typical case you prat..... <_< He's clearly lucky enough to have "mater and pater" paying for everything.... That is NOT the experience of the vast majority of students, a good many of students these days are coming from working class backgrounds, or are mature students returning to study after working or have had kids... I dont work with anyone who's under about the age of 25... The vast majority of students also have some sort of part-time work, only to have their income taxed to pay for layabouts like you.. <_< You really do just soak up all the sh!t of the day that anonymous "sources" on the Internet and The Scum tells you dont you....? I repeat my point - You have no right to criticise anyone who actually goes out there and tries to better themselves when you yourself are just content to sit on your arse all day and expect ME to keep you.....
December 2, 200915 yr Talking of income tax, i got taxed about £100 too much last year. Fancy sendin me a cheque Chris :P
December 2, 200915 yr Talking of income tax, i got taxed about £100 too much last year. Fancy sendin me a cheque Chris :P I would but am a bit strapped for cash at present. :( Credit crunch, Christmas etc and the wife's keeping me short too  I'm sure you'll get it back from the taxman anyway. Edited December 2, 200915 yr by Crazy Chris
December 2, 200915 yr He bloody better. I could do with that £100. Mind you, he owes me a good couple of hundred from this year. Bloody tax codes
