everybody makes a fuss over X Factor dominating the christmas #1, but it really is the season of rubbish in the chart...this is a list of all of the xmas #2's since 1990;

1990 - Ice Ice Baby - Vanilla Ice

1991 - When You Tell Me That You Love Me - Diana Ross

1992 - Heal the World - Michael Jackson

1993 - Babe - Take That

1994 - All I Want For Christmas Is You - Mariah Carey

1995 - Wonderwall - Mike Flowers Pops

1996 - Knockin' On Heaven's Door - Dunblane

1997 - Teletubbies say "Eh-oh!" - Teletubbies

1998 - Chocolate Salty Balls - Chef

1999 - The Millennium Prayer - Cliff Richard

2000 - What Makes a Man - Westlife

2001 - How Wonderful You Are - Gordon Haskell

2002 - Sacred Trust - One True Voice

2003 - Christmas Time (Don't Let the Bells End) - The Darkness

2004 - Father & Son - Ronan Keating and Yusuf

2005 - JCB Song - Nizlopi

2006 - Patience - Take That

2007 - What a Wonderful World - Katie Melua and Eva Cassidy

2008 - Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley

a handful of songs aside, is this mostly horrendous list of songs any better than our christmas #1's list? Kids TV show songs, awful covers, boyband rubbish, novelty songs, career low's for some artists - not to mention the tragedy that was The Millennium Prayer - even Westlife's I Have A Dream was better than that to be honest! Apart from a couple of decent xmas songs plus Patience and Hallelujah, it's not a great list to be honest...I pray that one day we will have a decent xmas #1 but even without X Factor there would probably be some other rubbish ready to propel up the chart at this time of year...why won't people buy decent music at xmas

Best No.2 is 2005 Nizlopi from the list.
1994 - All I Want For Christmas Is You - Mariah Carey

2006 - Patience - Take That

Out of the whole list, I find these the only 2 songs that are half decent. -_-

It has to be said (I think), that both the Darkness & Teletubbies did retain a top position on the midweek part of the charts until the Friday. It was Saturday sales that put the re-made "Mad World" at the top, and also the same for the Spice Girls was it "Too Much", me thinks!

I remember that in 2003! that was a big shock on the Sunday, Mad World was such an odd xmas #1! Didn't know Spice Girls were so close to Teletubbies :o

I must be the only person who still likes The Darkness' Christmas song :(

And I maintain that Kylie - I Believe In You DESERVED CHRISTMAS #2 #1

I Believe In You was overrated slightly in my opinion - wasn't it #4 anyway at xmas 2004 behind Ronan's yearly update of Father & Son

and I never liked the xmas song by The Darkness - they were trying to re-create Wizzard and Slade but forgot that it wasn't the 70's anymore...Geraldine McQueen did a much better pastiche/tribute last year in my opinion

I Believe In You is DIVINE. It was Xmas #3, you made me check :P

I swear the whole point of The Darkness was forgetting it wasn't the 70s anymore? :kink:

I thought that The Darkness were terrible - so irritating  I'm so glad they were a one album wonder :heehee:

wasn't this the 2004 xmas top 5;

1) Band Aid - Do They Know It's Xmas (1)

2) Steve Brookstein - Against All Odds (NEW)

3) Ronan & Yusuf - Father and Son (2)

4) Kylie - I Believe In You (3)

5) Lemar - If There's Any Justice (7)

she went back to #3 the following week when Steve climbed to #1 :puke:

2004 is wrong. Steve Brookstein entered the week after Christmas and Ronan was Christmas no.2
No he didnt... he missed out on #1 to Band Aid 20...
The Darkness song was the sort of song that is so bad that it's actually rather good. It was a gloriously OTT piece of nonsense

Yea, was thinking the same myself. but was apparently wrong.

By the way, what happened to Steve Brookstein. Did he really get dropped in 12 weeks?

Yep, it was quite close with Teletubbies and Spice Girls...even closer further back. In 1986, the Housemartins retained top spot until Jackie Wilson went ahead on the Saturday. 1980, again John Lennon was just beaten by the St Winifred`s School Choir, and the #3 by Jona Lewie was not far behind either in the closest Christmas top 3 ever...Shocking really.

Even in 1985, Shakin`Stevens Northern sales gave him the #1. As Whitney Houston remained #1, all over Southern England`s regional charts.

Before those...In 1970, Dave Edmunds almost missed out to McGuiness Flint with "When I`m Dead And Gone". They were leading until a late surge by "I Hear You Knocking" at the weekend. Cliff could of nudged ahead of Elvis in 1962, but didn`t quite with "The Next Time/Bachelor Boy". So, Elvis retained with "Return To Sender". Danny Williams couldn`t beat off Frankie Vaughan in time for 1961. So, "Tower Of Strength" was tops then. Cliff never got there for 1960, as Elvis stayed there with "It`s Now Or Never". "I Love You" stuck at 2. All that, but the closest ever #1s at Christmas were in 1959, when Adam Faith retained there with "What Do You Want" & Emile Ford And The Checkmates "What Do You Want To Make Those Eyes At Me For", just a few copies away...and similar titles containing those same 4 words! Same small copies apart in 1955, as Dickie Valentine was really going head to head with Bill Haley. Dickie`s "Christmas Alphabet" was not that far from Bill Haley...probably so close it was hard to seperate them.

:arrr:

Are you serious?????

All I want for christmas is you IS DECENT!!!!!!!!!!! Durability, sales, charting, people's love for it prove that.

And peoples great reaction to patience is probably one of the reasons that kept TT together wanting to reunite and tour! It is definitely one of their 3 best songs!

None of them had xf pushing them as well!

If these songs are half decent what would you call decent?

(Take no offence I just didn't expect anyone would say that about those songs)

I think this is a classic case of someone misunderstanding the meaning of 'half decent', admittedly it varies from place to place.

By 'half decent', I'm assuming she meant 'not rubbish'. On the whole, I'd have to agree. What happened to the myth that Christmas #2's were better than the #1? Give me Spice Girls any day.

I see... It was the way it was said that made it sound like "these are the only two worth listening to from the whole bunch but still they are not that great"
Was definitely Ronan Keating at #2 for Xmas 2004. Steve Brookstein out the week later charted at #2, and then climbed to #1 to be the first #1 of 2005.

I completely agree, which is why I posted this awful list because everyone always says 'the xmas #2 is the real xmas #1' - thank god it's not in most cases!

I'd much rather have 2 Become 1, Too Much and Goodbye than Dunblane, Teletubbies and Chef
