personally, i don't see why people are automatically assuming this will go to number 1...

how do we know the british public will react well to it??

radio 1 review show gave it 29% and i can't say i disagree...

There's a fake version of it on iTunes and it's at #38 and climbing rapidly. That pretty much means it'll be huge. Okay, so it didn't make Sidney a #1, but he was in direct competition with Iyaz.

My god I love this song. If it doesn't make #1 I may actually cry.

on a similar note, I adore his entire album. It's so..beautiful  I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up being one of my highlight artists of '10

This act is nothing more than an inferior The Postal Service rip off. But because Owl City who is Adam Young is a bit photogenic this act will be huge.

Accept originally music never fall for pale imitations (especially if they are a pretty boy, who got his big break working for Coca-Cola and coming up with a jingle that was used by the said massive global company in Radio adverts; whom later got signed up by the big major label Universal who completely plagiarises the original sound of a small independent act (on the indie Sub Pop label) who released one the most critically acclaimed albums of the last decade:

Hell they even breathed life into a corpse of a 1980s power ballad mutilated by Mariah Carey, Westlife & Steve Brookstein .....

Listening to these wonderful tracks (and especially their sublime critically worshipped 2003 album Give Up) makes me annoyed how the Great British public were and still are indifferent to truly original sublime music, yet come 2010 they fall for a vastly inferior imitation because it is hyped as the next big thing.

Sometimes it really makes me quite angry how gullible some people can be.

Let's see what America's most important music media internet site thought of the now former US #1 hit:

Owl City

"Fireflies"

The surprise No. 1 single in the country, Owl City's "Fireflies", jacks the Postal Service in such a bald-faced, obvious manner that getting into specifics feels redundant at best and tacky at worst. But I doubt Ben Gibbard is losing sleep over Owl City's Adam Young squatting on what is essentially vacated property. Death Cab reportedly cleared $5.4 million in revenue during 2006, basically anyone who's watched TV in the past three years has heard the Postal Service, and Gibbard is married to the fantasy of every guy this song was ostensibly written for. But even if he's avoidant of most media and has no plans of ever reviving the Postal Service, at some point, there's gotta be a line you can't cross, and I hope "Fireflies" causes him to bum-rush the set of WOXY.com on some Cuban Linx $h!t and claim he don't want no one sounding like him on no album.

A No. 1 single, um, influenced by Postal Service isn't necessarily a bad thing. But really, if anyone should be insulted, it's Jimmy Tamborello, whose crucial and complex programming has been replaced by the kind of hack "electronica" tricks that popped up in any number of forgettable turn-of-the-century modern rock one-offs-- the squashed EQ of the pre-hook drums, politely distorted backup vocals, drippy strings... nice hook, but this song might as well last 10 seconds when there's that voice and those words. Like most "brought to you by..." attempts to connect with the disaffected, it's delivered in an emasculated, cloying wheeze that serves as a cutesy defense mechanism for a guy who's trying so hard to be sincere, he forgets to say what he actually means-- "From 10,000 lightning bugs/ As they tried to teach me how to dance/ A foxtrot above my head/ A sock hop beneath my bed/ A disco ball is just hanging by a thread." He's hanging by a moment here with you? He'll follow wherever you will go? We all wish we were somewhere making out, but seriously, stop listening to this song and and just ask her the f*** out already.

despite all of that, I still love this song and have done since long before it was even sniffing at being a US hit, let alone UK hit...the song will be a hit if people (like myself) like it and want to listen to it, regardless of what he looks like - as for The Postal Service, I've heard quite a bit of their music over the last few years and I've been interested in none of it personally - this isn't to say that they are bad, they just don't connect with me - just as Owl City don't connect to a lot of others...I thought you liked it anyway, wasn't it top ten in your personal chart recently :o

my sister used to be obsessed with The Postal Service's cover of Against All Odds and I really can't stand it personally :(

I really , truly. honestly could care less about what other people think of this song. You can quote as many reviews or surveys as you want.. fact is I love it and in my opinion it would be a thoroughly deserved No 1. And everyone knows why The Postal Service isn't popular, all those damn strikes last year, things getting lost in the mail, slow deliveries around Christmas etc.. :P

I liked it until I found out he denied ripping off The Postal Service. One thing music acts should learn is if an act are going to rip off other acts then own up to it (as for example Lady GaGa did so openly and candidly so early in her career regarding her influences); as denying it makes that act look stupid so creating a backlash against them.

The truth is, there is NO song on this planet that is universally liked - I'm yet to hear of a song or album that has never received a bad review - Owl City are just getting a massive backlash because they happen to be the 'in thing' at the moment and nobody likes overhyped acts (see the 'Little Boots effect' for more on this :P). But no matter what the indie blogs and respectable media think about the song, it is a worldwide smash hit because it's a catchy accessible pop song which has broad appeal - much like most other worldwide hits - and this is why it is a guaranteed UK #1 hit. You can have all the hype you like but if you haven't got potential smash hit singles to back it up with, it's not worth bothering in the first place.

I do try to avoid media interviews/reviews if I can for fear of my opinions being influenced on certain artists before I've had a chance to form my own opinion on them in musical terms, although sometimes they are hard to avoid (La Roux) but still I don't think I've ever gone off a song just because of the bad attitude of an artist (I still love La Roux's music). He's obviously heavily influenced by The Postal Service but no artist would surely publicly admit that they were 'ripping off' another artist - unless of course he actually stated that The Postal Service were not even a musical influence of his, and then you have a fair point.

Well knowing the feedback it is getting on the American music website with a bias towards alternative music I'm increasingly posting more and more on I certainly know he is about as popular on that website right now as Westlife are here, after his comments regarding being influenced by the highly regarded The Postal Service.

In short I will be very surprised if he is little more than another Vanilla Ice (i.e. big for six months and then the dumper) as he has hacked off a lot of music fans for outing himself as a "fake" and is getting a bit of a verbal kicking (to put it mildly). I would not mind betting the likes of Medicated Soap and Jonny would agree with me on this.

I have to admit, I first heard 'Fireflies' last summer thanks to the Unknown Pleasures which took place on ChC. I'd never heard of The Postal Service then so I'd actually heard of Owl City first. Blame TV and radio for that - yes, I've discovered a lot of artists thanks to the internet, but The Postal Service wasn't one of them.

'Fireflies' is a great radio friendly song. I was surprised myself how much the style of the song copies from that Postal Service track thisispop posted. The thing is, 'Fireflies' sounds more commercial/radio friendly than those Postal Service tracks so it's not surprising Owl City is more popular. It's got nothing to do with the singer of Owl City being "cute". I haven't a clue what he looks like. You don't even see his face in the video, just side profiles!!! Nor do I care what he "looks like". It should be about the music and I think 'Fireflies' is a great track. Yes, the lyrics are daft but it's not a million miles away from the lyrics to 'The Land Of Make Believe' by Bucks Fizz and that was also a massive hit.

In short I will be very surprised if he is little more than another Vanilla Ice (i.e. big for six months and then the dumper)

He could well be. I've heard another Owl City song called 'Umbrella Beach' which didn't appeal to me whatsoever. That's two songs by Owl City I've heard - I think one is excellent, and the other is crap. So it doesn't bode well for the album if it's more "Umbrella Beach" than "Fireflies".

he'll most certainly only be a one or two hit wonder - Ocean Eyes is an incredibly repetitive one trick pony of an album

I agree - radio will always promote the most accessible broadly appealing songs. I'm a sucker for a catchy melody personally and I can honestly say that The Postal Service interest me in no way whatsoever. Even if they had received the same level of mainstream media support as Owl City, I am yet to hear anything from them that could be a worldwide #1 single...

I wouldn't bother with his album by the way Hits, it's quite melody free in places and very much regurgitating the same two sounds throughout the whole abum

Didn't do Vengaboys any harm!!! :naughty:

i love this track, poppy and interesting, #1 in USA twice so we'll follow..good track :P :P

I found his quote regarding The Postal Service;

"I had some friends in high school that would have it playing in their cars and stuff. It was cool, but it never really caught my ear. It’s funny, because the more I hear people relating the two, the more I realize that they are pretty similar — even though that wasn’t my initial goal or anything."

well he's obviously lying, or telling the truth and been HEAVILY subconsciously influenced by what he heard! Fair play to him for plugging a gap in the market though - it's practcially a licence for him to print money :heehee: still love the song though, he seems like more of a 'playful idiot' than an evil of the music industry :P

Life is tough. Fireflies sounds quite a bit like We Will Become Silhouettes but whether a song becomes a hit or not can often be down to timing. In the UK, that sort of retro 80s sound became popular last year with the likes of La Roux. It may not be fair but Owl City got the timing right whereas The Postal Service didn't.
