This is probably quite a big one that most people already know, but I recently learned that the biggest selling single of 1986, and quite possibly the campest song ever released, "Don't Leave Me This Way" by The Communards was a cover. The first version was by Harold Melvin, which itself was a top 10 hit in 1977. Very different to the NRG which become the monster hit -

 

I don't think its sounds that camp compared to Dead or Alive - Lover Come Back or some of the other Stock Aitken Waterman produced stuff.

 

Also is one of the first electronic dance chart hits to prominently use piano (albeit only in a small part of it) which would go on to dominate chart dance music by 1989.

 

I prefer Never Can Say Goodbye tbh from them although both are very good.

 

Anyway, back on theme for the thread, there are two ones I didn't know were covers until recently, Simply Red's Money's Too Tight To Mention and KWS's Please Don't Go.

I only learned recently that "Proud Mary" by Tina Turner was originally a Creedence Clearwater Revival single. And in the UK at least, it was the more successful version - it went #8 on the charts here, whereas the Tina Turner version didn't chart until 2010, at #62.

Never Can Say Goodbye I prefer to Don't Leave Me This Way I think. It sounds a bit more modern and dancey with the beat. Both songs are brill though.

 

Speaking of Don't Leave Me This Way, I found this recently, a track from from 1985 (a year before The Communards/ Sarah Jane Morris version), when looking up 80s Hi-NRG tracks....

 

 

Maybe the Communards and Morris heard this and were inspired by this HI-NRG version?

They were quick off the mark getting the Tight Fit version out. A quick search reveals the had it in the shops the day before that year's contest And in those days the national finals were normally held closer to the final.

I've seen a few references to Westife. One song of theirs which people not realise is a cover is Hey Whatever. It was originally called Rainbow Zephyr and was written and recorded by a band from Northern Ireland called Relish (who came from the same town as Ash). The original was called Rainbow Zephyr, was released in 2001 as a single and appeared on their 2001 album "Wildflowers". The lyrics were adjusted to make them for suitable for Westlife's audience.
