February 15, 201015 yr Viewing figures over the past few years: 2009 - 5.2m 2008 - 6.1m 2007 - 5.3m Not as many as I thought... but I guess a much higher percentage of music buyers.
February 15, 201015 yr Just a question for anyone who doesn't think Florence + the Machchine is a solo artist? What's the say so on acts like Owl City or Whitetown. Technically they're 1 person each, but their name suggests that they're whole towns and cities! THERE IS NO MACHINE IN FLORENCE + THE MACHINE! But it is a catchier name than Florence Welch. Little Boots is not an actual pair of small shoes. The Scissor Sisters are not sisters or even all women. They're all just names, same with Florence. Personally I think she's more deserving of the female award than Leona, however I do agree it was a travesty that Leona lost out to Kate Nash in 2008 (I actually wanted KT Tunstall to win but there was no chance of that).
February 15, 201015 yr Those viewing figures are tragic and well deserved I do not think the awards are held in high esteem, actually the Royal Variety Performance gets almost twice as many viewers.
February 15, 201015 yr Those viewing figures are tragic and well deserved I do not think the awards are held in high esteem, actually the Royal Variety Performance gets almost twice as many viewers. The X Factor gets nearly 3x as many viewers, but I don't think you could ever say that the show is held in "high esteem".
February 15, 201015 yr I am sure after the success of Leona Lewis, Alexandra Burke, Rhydian and JLS many people do hold the X-factor in high esteem, what exactly is your point.
February 15, 201015 yr THERE IS NO MACHINE IN FLORENCE + THE MACHINE! You see, this is where you're wrong. People assume Florence is solo because the other members are never mentioned - it's the same deal with La Roux and Sade to name two. The Machine is Isabella Summers, and in various sources there are 3-4 male 'members' of the band mentioned too. And yes, I know Florence pretty much considers herself to be solo, but it's unfair to not credit Isabella Machine at least.
February 15, 201015 yr If Florence & The Machine were to be counted as a band you might as well class the vast majority of solo artists as a band. They all have musicians that perform the music and go on tour with them. It's not really any different to Florence, she just gives them more credit.

So does Leona Lewis, KT Tunstall, Amy Winehouse and other solo artists. As for Isabella Summers, I honesty hadn't heard of her until this thread. If she is so important, how come Florence never mentions her? I mean, in interviews, I've heard other members of LaRoux mentioned, Ellie herself refers to other members of the group. Florence never does. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I honestly have never known this beforehand. And Sade has been nominated for best female before, so if Florence shouldn't count neither should Sade have.
February 15, 201015 yr Right, I'm back, having actually done some research! Always good to know something about the subject before sticking your ore in-I feel like i'm becoming one of Buzzjack's beloved loons! Florence + the Machine IS a band it seems. Which means now not only do I look foolish for my previous argument but its made me feel that Florence Welch is quite arrogant in interviews (seriously even if the other members do not want the attention, a little acknowledgement would probably be good) and that the BRITs have no right whatsoever in handing out awards if they cannot work out which category everyone is supposed to go in! Apologies to Brayfish and anyone else I argued with. I've learned my lesson! Always do your homework! Edited February 15, 201015 yr by T Boy

February 15, 201015 yr Florence is a solo artist and "The Machine" is Florence's backing band and consists of several musicians, pretty much the same argument arose when The Streets (Mike Skinner) won best male in 2005. Edited February 15, 201015 yr by suggy
February 15, 201015 yr Florence is a solo artist and "The Machine" is Florence's backing band and consists of several musicians, pretty much the same argument arose when The Streets (Mike Skinner) won best male in 2005. I think the main problem is that she refers to her backing band in her stage name. I always thought the Streets was just Mike Skinner (obviously a band will have been involved) but its the fact she refers to her band in her name and yet doesn't seem to officially count them in the act. They could at least call her Florence Welch when running down the nominations for best female. (Note, one year Mick Hucknal, not Simply Red, won best male).

Isn't it the same thing with Marina and the Diamonds though?
February 15, 201015 yr Isn't it the same thing with Marina and the Diamonds though? no "Her eponymous name "Marina and the Diamonds" consists of Diamandis' first name and the translation of her surname which means "Diamonds" in Greek. "The Diamonds" refers to Diamandis' fans but is commonly mistaken for her backing band." "I'm Marina. You are the diamonds."

February 15, 201015 yr GaGa must win all she is nominated for! THIS. She's been everywhere in 2009 and truly deserves all 3. Best single should be FFTL because it was huge. It broke records and ended up really high in the year-end chart... If JLS win it, something's wrong... 'Beat Again' wasn't *huge*. Sure, it was number one, but so was 'My Life Would Suck Without You', 'When Love Takes Over' and 'Oopsy Daisy', but none of those could be considered *huge*. (BTW, I am aware that I didn't choose British examples only, it was only proving a point that simply being Number 1 doesn't make a song huge, as is the case with 'Beat Again'...)
February 15, 201015 yr Whatever you say, having a AND YES AND makes more than one, an AND means + something aka NOT SOLO! End of. Those viewing figures are actually terrible. Thought it would be near 10mil at least. Good point someone said, high percentage of music buyers, and then the news attention it gets helps the acts/songs.
February 15, 201015 yr Whatever you say, having a AND YES AND makes more than one, an AND means + something aka NOT SOLO! End of. One of the most confusing sentences I've ever read... I get the gist and totally agree, though, lol
February 15, 201015 yr  Sorry yeah reading that back is a bit blah but the message behind it makes sense :-P
